Re: horn vs tszyu
As we come out of the lockdown (fingers crossed) the stoush will be easily Australia's biggest domestic fight of the year, Tszyu (15-0-0) has been installed as favourite against 32-year-old Horn (20-2-1), the former WBO welterweight champion.
Horn's last outing was a rugged redemption victory over Michael Zerafa, an accomplished Victorian middleweight, who stunned him in the first of their double at that weight.
The Hornet won a world title at welterweight, but was less than convincing at middleweight and now settles into what he reckons is the perfect compromise: super welterweight. It's a division he believes he can be most effective in as he settles into the final phase of his career.
Although he's beaten Manny Pacquiao and been in the ring with the likes of Terence Crawford, Horn struggles to understand why he is listed as an outsider, in his own state, against a fighter who has taken care of domestic opponents in good style but is about to take a significant leap in class.
The Queenslander has been taken lightly in the past but, with many believe he is beyond his used by date facing a rising star. He was pilloried for his preparation for the first Zerafa fight and needed all of his resilience to beat him the second time.
Horn considers himself at super welterweight now, where he believes he can maximise his advantages. He was a bully of a welterweight but lost that physical presence at middleweight, a division where he didn't have to work especially hard to stay under the limit. Now he wants that pressure back, but will need to be in superb shape against Tszyu, a fighter who never cuts corners.
This is a case where 'styles make fights', and no doubt Horn will burrow forward and try to brawl with Tszyu to make it an ugly affair. Tszyu will stay out of range, trying to pick him off with accurate shots. If he succeeds, he will more than likely open up some of Horn's troublesome cuts.
This isn't Horn's first big rumble when it comes to major fights, but Tszyu doesn't appear overwhelmed by the media attention and pressure. He knows a win over Horn opens doors and, potentially, a rails-run towards a world title shot sooner rather than later.

Re: horn vs tszyu
Tszyu would stop Horn. The first big test will be passed. However, it's big more in terms of the opponent's name, which is overhyped because of the gift decision against Pac. Horn is tough and hard-hitting, while his skills are mediocre. Tszyu looked like a more polished boxer.
Re: horn vs tszyu
I think Tszyu can win this fight. Horn is very tough and been in with some of the best, but I think Tim will be too sharp and hit him way too often. Manny came to Australia underprepared and thought he could take Horn out whenever he wanted. When he stepped it up in the 9th he punched himself out. Full marks to Jeff cause he still had to beat him regardless. The last couple of fights probably have taken their toll on Jeff a bit as they were hard fights with Zerafa. I just think Tim’s on the way up and will win.

Tszyu's height and reach will make the difference and will do a number on Horn like Crawford did.

Re: horn vs tszyu
They look pretty much the exact same height, but Tim is down as having a good 4 inches of reach, so that could be a good tool if used
Re: horn vs tszyu
Not so sure about that one , Tim does'nt have much experience at high level ,, Horn does , Tim may well try , but i doubt Horn will have any trouble cutting him off and shortening the distance ,, I think this fight will be more about how much has Horn regressed over the last couple of years and hard fights . Ok Horn has never been the most skillful boxer , but he could, and did , compete at a much higher level than Tim for quite a while

Horn is on the verge of breaking, but does Tim have the right experience to pull a win? Also, Jeff has some size that cannot be underestimated.

There is mail Jeff Horn has been struggling with his sparring in the build-up to Wednesday night’s super fight against Tim Tszyu. The bookies have obviously heard the same thing because Tszyu is at the ridiculously short odds of $1.50.
Re: horn vs tszyu
If Horns , strong and fit , his sparring would'nt matter ,,, Tszyu , is'nt a bad little boxer , don't think he's world class , wherass Horn has been well lets say fringe world class ,, But i think the biggest problem for Tim , is'nt how good a boxer Horn is , its how bad a boxer he is , whilst being a very good brawler ,, I just don't think Tim will handle someone who , just does so many things wrong , and puts his head down ass up and goes for it , Tim will have to expect the unexpected , and i don't think he has the experience for that .
Too be honest , i would of thought that if Tim was the real deal it would of paid him to stay ameteur and try for olympics , the first Aussie boxer to win one will be very rich ,,, but that leaves the question was he the best ameteur in the country at the time , only asking because i don't know

Re: horn vs tszyu
I think Tim lost once out of about 35 in the amateurs. That was to Daniel Lewis who went to the last olympics. Would have to be exceptional to win Olympic gold. Some fighters just aren’t suited to the amateurs even though now the scoring is much closer to the pros.coneye wrote: ↑24 Aug 2020, 12:28 If Horns , strong and fit , his sparring would'nt matter ,,, Tszyu , is'nt a bad little boxer , don't think he's world class , wherass Horn has been well lets say fringe world class ,, But i think the biggest problem for Tim , is'nt how good a boxer Horn is , its how bad a boxer he is , whilst being a very good brawler ,, I just don't think Tim will handle someone who , just does so many things wrong , and puts his head down ass up and goes for it , Tim will have to expect the unexpected , and i don't think he has the experience for that .

Re: horn vs tszyu
If he were the real deal he'd stay amateur till he was like 26? Not sure I get that ....plus there is a fair bit of luck involved in winning gold even for the best ams... tough draws, bad decisions, a poor opening round in fight that only has 3 rounds, injury, simply having an 'either way' decision go against you, etc. Most of the best pros never win gold.
Re: horn vs tszyu
Does anyone know if there has been any discussion about the officials for this fight??
Will it be an all QLD juding panel and a QLD referee due to the closure of the QLD border??

Re: horn vs tszyu
Typical argy-bargy about the officials in the media:
The Jeff Horn-Tim Tszyu bout has been marred by claims of officiating bias, with one of the judges forced to apologise for unethical conduct in an explosive build-up to Australia’s fight of the year.
In a sensational prelude, Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton raised an integrity scandal by alleging one of the three judges, Phil Holiday, predicted Tszyu would win the blockbuster event in Townsville on Wednesday night.
Under the rules, judges are gagged from making any public or private comment in relation to an upcoming bout for fear it would jeopardise the sanctity of the fight.
The Tszyu camp hit back furiously with co-promoter Matt Rose labelling the claims “disgusting” and trainer Glen Jennings lashing Rushton by declaring: “It’s an allegation that can’t be proven”.
But Rushton was ultimately vindicated when Holiday’s fellow judge, Derek Milham, confirmed his co-official admitted making the statement that Tszyu could win because Horn is prone to cuts.
Rushton also raised concerns about the third judge, Chris Condon, following revelations he has known Kostya Tszyu for 20 years and allowed his son, Tim, to train out of his gym for this bout.
“If these judges don’t feel they can be impartial then they should step aside, it’s as simple as that,” Rushton said.
“Tim has trained at the gymnasium owned by Chris Condon, I’m not comfortable with that relationship but I thought one out of three judges is not the end of the world.
“What has also come to light is that a (second) judge has a very strong view that Tim Tszyu would win the fight. He told a friend that.
“That’s two judges out of three. It’s not only a matter of being fair, it’s being seen to be fair.
“I don’t like judges going into a fight with a preconceived outcome of the fight.
“All I ask is for a fair go, we don’t want any bias, that’s all we need to win this fight.”
Co-promoter Rose ripped into Rushton, accusing him of trying to destabilise the Tszyu camp.
“To question the integrity of an official on national cameras is disgusting,” Rose said.
“Trust Glenn Rushton to bring up something like this a day before a fight. He must have learned a bit off (Anthony) ‘Choc’ Mundine in selling a fight.”
Jennings added: “Rushton should apologise for this. He has picked it out of his arse.
“From the time we have come up here, Chris Condon has been the ultimate professional. I asked him for a coffee one day and he said no I’m an official for this fight.
“We don’t know the other judge (Holiday) from a bar of soap.
“It’s an allegation that can’t be proven.”
Milham set the record straight, revealing Holiday had indeed made prejudicial remarks about Horn. It has sparked calls for Holiday to be sacked as a judge.
“I spoke to the judge and he is quite embarrassed and he apologised to me about it,” Milham said. “He made a comment that Horn may be in a bit of trouble and could lose due to cut eyes. Phil is a very professional guy and we have competent officials.
“There is a red and blue corner and whoever wins the fight, wins the fight fairly.”
JUDGE HITS BACK AT INTEGRITY CONCERNS
By Matthew Elkerton
The man embroiled in the controversy surrounding the Jeff Horn and Tim Tszyu fight has spoken for the first time.
Townsville boxing stalwart Chris Condon was caught in the centre of a fiery exchange between Horn’s trainer Glen Rushton and Tszyu’s manager Glen Jennings following the weigh-ins.
Rushton questioned the integrity of the fight with two of the three judges causing concern for the Horn camp. One of those judges was Condon, who is a registered official with the World Boxing Organization and has presided over world title bouts in the past.
Rushton raised concerns that Condon, who operates the Townsville Showground, had a personal connection with Tszyu’s father, and former unified world champion, Kostya.
It is understood Tszyu has also trained in Condon’s gym at the showgrounds in the lead up to the fight at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on August 26.
While he was careful in what he said, Condon cleared the air to News Corp and said he would not step down from his appointment as a judge.
“The appointments were decided three weeks ago, we had a meeting with both camps and from what I knew it was full steam ahead,” Condon told the Townsville Bulletin.
“I actually met Glen (Rushton) at the weigh-in and we had no problems. I think it is a bit of a play-up for the fight.
“I have been involved in boxing all of my life, I am a WBO (World Boxing Organisation) official. I am good friends with Glen Jennings but when he contacted me before the fight for a coffee, I declined. I didn’t want any impropriety before the fight.”
Condon confirmed Tszyu had been training at his gym but that he was not present at any of the sessions.
“The gym was opened up by one of my buddies, and I had nothing to do with it,” he said.
“Jeff was welcome to train there as well. We knew he was looking for a gym and we were happy to have him. That gym has been in Townsville for 30 years.”
The war of words between the camps exploded after the weigh-in at The Ville, with Rushton raising concerns over Condon’s involvement as a judge and the revelation that fellow judge
Re: horn vs tszyu
Mmmmm ,,, Well i have to admit if i was Horns, trainer / manager , and found out Tim had been training at one judges gym , and the other judge felt before the fight Tim was gonna win ,, Then i'm afraid , i would threaten to pull him out, unless they replaced them judges ,,
, Rushton is doing his job , , by at least letting them know ALL EYES ARE ON THEM . and too be honest maybee just maybee putting a little doubt in there mind, and pressure to maybee be a little bit overley fair... Mind Games . Looks like there working has well

JEFF HORN VS TIM TSZYU LIVE BLOG AND RESULTS Tim Tszyu def. Jeff Horn via TKO
After plenty of pre-fight drama, Tim Tszyu eventually walked out first and the bout got underway.
Round 1 - Tszyu got the better of the first round, landing some nice shots and controlling the distance. First round definitely went the way of the 25-year old.
Round 2 - Referee laying down the law, telling them to stop wrestling. Horn continues to come in and look to grapple with Tszyu. Another good round for Tszyu, however Horn looked better than he did in the first.
Round 3 - Big right hand from Tszyu lands and stuns Horn. Big trouble for Horn as he tries to hang on. A left hook floors Horn but he beats the standing count from the official.
Round 4 - Tszyu looks to finish as he continues to dominate. Horn looking very tired and a finish seemingly on the horizon. Horn survives, but only just.
Round 5 - Pure dominance from Tszyu as he starts to land some nice body shots as well. Real toughness being shown from Horn - eating the clock but not offering much offense.
Round 6 - Horn landed a couple of shots early in the round, but Tszyu remaining in control and looking for the big shot. Another standing eight count, and the ref tells Horn to start defending himself. He somehow survives yet another round but the writing looks to be on the wall.
Round 7 - Horn came out fast again, but to little effect. Possibly the most even round of the fight, but it was still Tszyu in complete control. Looks as though he was just playing with his opponent.
Round 8 - More fierce body shots from Tszyu as he continues to pile on the pain. Horn lands a couple of nice shots, including an uppercut but it is all going the 25-year old's way. The fight stops at the conclusion of the the eighth round after consultation with Horn's corner.
An absolutely oustanding display from Tszyu, who was in charge from the get-go. Horn was as tough as ever, but had no answers for what the younger man was throwing at him.

Re: horn vs tszyu
Tszyu dealt with Horn's underhand tactics comfortably, pretty one-sided beatdown in truth. Looking forward to watching Tim progress towards world level.
Re: horn vs tszyu
The difference was the exponential improvement in Tszyu in each of his fights and that Horn continued diminishing after those savage fights with Zerafa.
Horn never won a round in the lop-sided fight, when the referee stepped in to stop the carnage. He was outclassed and obviously badly advised and prepared by his corner.
The unsettling part was his trainer, Glenn Rushton was rightly slammed for his attempt to coax a clearly hurting Horn into continuing his bout with Tim even though the score card was 80 to 70 against him.
Rushton was seen on the broadcast rallying against others in the Hornet’s corner at the end of the eighth round as they called for the fight to be stopped.
A good summation from the Daily Telegraph:

Rushton was seen on the broadcast rallying against others in the Hornet’s corner at the end of the eighth round as they called for the fight to be stopped.
A good summation from the Daily Telegraph:
Retire now Jeff and don't be remembered for this last fight, but for that sunny afternoon back 2nd July 2017 when you did the impossible and were top of the world.“It’s up to you, what do you want to do,” Rushton says to a dazed Horn who shrugs his shoulders as others in his corner say they don’t want him to go on.
“What do you want to do,” Rushton repeats, Horn almost non-responsive after copping a battering from Tszyu, to which a Team Hornet member says “That says it all”.
“Have you got a punch left in ya? Have you got a punch left in you or not? Do you want to give us a minute?”
The referee then pressures the team, who appear to finally relent and the bout is stopped.
Kent believe Horn had been given bad advice throughout the fight.
“He was gassed after two rounds and he was gone and already by Round 3 Tim Tszyu was stalking Jeff Horn looking for the shot and yet, when he goes back to the corner, Glen Rushton was telling Jeff Horn that he’s got to walk up and be first and he’s got to push the pace against Tim Tszyu,” Kent said.
“The fight was over at that point, he was in survival mode already by then, to be told by his corner that he had to lead the fight, that he had to walk up on Tim Tszyu, it just astounds me.
“We asked before the fight whether it was one fight too many, we questioned his fitness.
“He clearly wasn’t fit enough for the fight, he’s been pushed into this fight when he wasn’t fit enough to fight 10 rounds, he was gone after two rounds and his corner should have known that.”
