Sergio Martinez vs. Jose Manuel Fandino - August 21, 2020
It's not confirmed but Espabox writes that the opponent for 45-year old Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez could be Jose Manuel Fandino (15-6) on August 22 in Torrelavega.
Martinez (51-3-2) has been out of the ring for six years, since suffering a knockout loss at the hands of Miguel Cotto in 2014.
Fandino is a decent fighter but the type of opponent "Maravilla" would have handled easily when he was at the peak of his career but now, who knows?

Sergio Martinez Confirms Jose Miguel Fandino is Comeback Opponent
Former two division world champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martínez has officially confirmed that his return to the sport of boxing will be against Spanish contender José Miguel Fandino (15-6, 8 KOs), in a fight to take place in the middleweight division.
Martínez confirmed the date change during an interview offered this afternoon to Chronicle TV. The card was initially scheduled for Saturday, August 22, and seems to have been pushed back by 24 hours, to Friday the 21st.
The fight will be scheduled to take place over ten rounds, in Torrelavega, which is a city located in northern Spain, near Bilbao and about 400 kilometers from Madrid.
The boxing festival of that evening will showcase a championship contest in the main event, as Spain's Sergio García will defend the title of European super welterweight championship.

A very bad idea. Martinez isn't just old, in fact he was forced to retire due to injuries. It can turn to a situation similar to David Haye's case.

Apparently this is gonna happen...
Martinez 161.4lb .. opponent a full 2kg heavier, 165.8kg
Pretty rare to see a 45+ year old Middleweight(ish).. christ just realized Sam Soliman is still active.

Re: Sergio Martinez vs. Jose Manuel Fandino - August 21, 2020

Firstly, everything is ready for the comeback of ‘Maravilla’ on August 21 at the Malecón stadium in Torrelavega, Spain.
Secondly, both fighters passed the official weigh-in on Thursday. Martinez registered 161.3 pounds and José Fandiño gave 165 pounds.
On the card, there will also be other attractive encounters. Undefeated Sergio García (31-0 / 27 KO) will face Pablo Mendoza (9-4-0, 9 Kos). Former super bantamweight world champion Kiko Martínez (40-9-2 / 28 KO) will fight against Noe Martínez Raygoza ( 23-10-2, 10 Kos).

Martinez won by TKO in 7th.. apparently he looked pretty good doing it.
I see he's back at #14 in BoxRec MW rankings.... Update: and suddenly he's out of the Top 100?

Sergio Martinez Cracks WBA's Top Ten, Ranked at Six
Last month, Sergio Martinez told reporters that his goal was to secure a world title opportunity against WBA "regular" middleweight champion Ryota Murata.
On August 21, the 45-year-old Martinez (52-3-2, 29 KOs) entered the ring for the first time in over six years. The last time he saw action, in 2014, he was knocked out by Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Not long after that loss, Martinez retired due to numerous injuries - with the most serious being to his knees.
In his ring return, which took place in Spain, Martinez dominated and stopped overmatched foe Jose Fandino in seven rounds.
Martinez claims the issues with his knees were resolved some time ago, although he did wear a precautionary brace in his return.
Before the contest took place, Martinez explained that World Boxing Association President Gilberto Mendoza promised him a future world title shot at Murata - if the veteran boxer continued his comeback path with a few more wins.
Murata's American promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, is receptive to the contest.
Martinez, a former world champion at junior middleweight and middleweight, is now officially on the road to that contest.
On Tuesday, the World Boxing Association released their monthly rankings and Martinez has already cracked the top ten. The boxer now sits in the number six position.
Martinez expects to be ready in a few more fights.
"This is the beginning of something very beautiful: I won't stop until the world title. I've learned to enjoy the road. I have in mind to continue doing a few more fights. I need to consolidate here to feel ready to face Murata. From this point to four fights," Martinez said.

The WBA is desperate to raise funds through sanctioning fees by needlessly creating titles in weight divisions, where none are needed (i.e. the recently announced bout between Yordenis Ugás and Abel Ramos for the vacant regular welterweight championship), as well as unfairly elevating A-side cash cow marquee names in their rankings, without having earned such status (i.e. Sergio Martinez).Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑02 Sep 2020, 05:51 Before the fight: Martinez said his target opponent was WBA 'Regular' champion Murata.

Sometimes I’m really disappointed in myself for being a fan of a sport where financial drawing power is perceived as being far more important than sporting prowess.
