Povetkin-Whyte Rematch Eyed For November 14 or 21, Says Hearn

Eddie Hearn, promoter for Dillian Whyte, says a rematch with Alexander Povetkin is being targeted for two dates in November.

Last month at Matchroom's Fight Camp in Brentwood, Povetkin was down twice and behind on points when he brutally knocked out Whyte with a single uppercut in the fifth round.

The unexpected loss removed Whyte from his WBC-interim title and his mandatory position to full world champion Tyson Fury. The mandatory defense was due by February 2021, but now Fury is free to schedule voluntaries next year.

There is a rematch clause, which Whyte is exercising to force a second fight.

Hearn wants to avoid having the rematch in 2021 and is looking at November 14 or 21, according to comments given to IFL TV.

"There's not many in boxing that honour contracts and honour obligations and their word," Hearn said.

"Andrey Ryabinksiy, Vadim Kornilov and World of Boxing, even if we didn't have a contract, and we had a shake of the hand or an agreement, they would still do it. These are proper, proper people. They don't want to wait till February/March so we will go November 14, or November 21."

World of Boxing, who promote Whyte, have yet to be informed of a date.

"We have no confirmation or information," World of Boxing told RT Sport. "There has been contact [with Hearn]. There will be a rematch, we just don't know when. About November 21 we don't have any information."

Povetkin turned 41-years-old on Wednesday. The victory over Whyte saved his career and placed him on the path to future paydays, win or lose in the rematch.

Povetkin will repeat. I can't predict, how exactly the fight would go. None can do it. Probably Whyte will try to be more cautious. But last time Whyte fought without being hurt two and a half years ago. Whyte wouldn't become a defensive wizard in a couple of mounths. Povetkin wouldn't age much in this period either. Povetkin can catch Whyte, Povetkin has enough power to KO Whyte. Surely, anything can happen in fights like this, but I see Povetkin repeating as the most likely option.

P.S. Happy Birthday to Sasha!

I picked Povetkin first time around, but I'd favour Whyte in the rematch.

I’ll stick with my prediction from the first fight as it served me so well...

Whyte was up 40-34 or 39-35, and Pov's legs got jiggly so easily. As great of a KO as it was I'd still back Whyte in a rematch.

That's an interesting occurance....wonder how often it happens....pick the correct winner in the first fight, but then pick against him in an immediate rematch

Whyte was getting Pov with the jab and right cross from range, but made the mistake of allowing Pov to get close...although this did allow him to score the knockdowns with the sharp, short counters. If he can fight a disciplined fight and keep it more at range, tie up when close with more lateral movement (ala Joshua v Ruiz jr 2) then he could wear Pov down for a late stoppage. However, Whyte is one of those fighters though who always seems to get involved a bit more than is necessary, so any good work could quickly become undone in similar fashion as the first fight.
I think he can do it though, with a wobble along the way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Whyte reversed the result, despite picking Povetkin by KO in the first fight. I thought Whyte would be whyde open for one of those clobbering sneaky counters Povetkin is adept at; the thing is, I wasn't expecting the Ruskie to look quite so old and shaky in the process. Given how alarmingly vulnerable he is now to half-solid punches, and the fact he is going to have to put his aged body through another tough training camp so soon after the last one, I suspect it will all be a bit too much for him, and that he will be there for the taking if Dillian plays it safe.

When Lewis was reported as filming a cameo and not acclimatising fully, I picked Rahman to beat him. Bit of a special case, though. Cleverly-Bellew might be one of the more recent ones, but with a big gap between fights.

Tony Bellew believes Alexander Povetkin's punch to knockout Dillian Whyte was 'once in a lifetime' but backs the British heavyweight to get revenge in a potential rematch.

If this fight is on PPV again, the undercard must be far better than the last one.

First fight was quality. Can’t wait. These unexpected rivalries are important to a fighter’s development. Fury-Wilder, Joshua-Ruiz etc.

Whyte has to ability to bust up Povetkin to a painful TKO beating but Povetkin as we know can outwit him and take advantage of Whyte’s defensive lapses with good technique and well placed shots.

Very soon to fight again after such a thunderous KO. I think pov may find him again. Whyte will regret not having tibbs and apprehension may surface.

I would be surprised if Povetkin accepts the fight on such a short turnaround. An older man needs more tome to rest and recover. If I were Povetkin I would pushing it back to February next year.

The only time in my life I recall doing it was predicting Glen Johnson to beat Tarver 1st go round, and then picking Tarver to win the rematch.

I don't know that there's any evidence of this outside of my circle of friends, but I remember it.

Ya, I can see it for that one, Tarver bit unlucky to lose the first fight wasn't he?

I believe that. I certainly didn't predict it but I remember not being bowled over by either result. The way I remember it afterwards was Johnson was on a terrific run going into the first fight (capped with the domination of RJJ) but as the taller, more creative fighter (and not physically outmatched in the first fight), Tarver was always going to have a great chance of working out how to win the rematch.

I thought both decisions were reasonable. Both fights pretty close. Johnson just outhustled him more in the 1st fight, Tarver tended to have a lot of inactive moments, and Johnson seized those moments.

He was smarter, moved a lot more, and used more creative combinations in the rematch.

Best run of his career. He was the Fighter of the Year that year.

Can't stand Bellew. He used to give Whyte all sorts of grief until he became Matchroom's main cheerleader, now he's Whyte's number 1 fan. Made me laugh his comments that Whyte will 'definitely' become a world champion.

He could “easily destroy Fury”....
Now Fury is unbeatable.
This is the same man who needed to keep out of the spotlight, then did an hour with kugan, went on Celebrity SAS, Sky, PoundforPound, James English, an evening with all over the place!
