Luis Ortiz vs Alexander Flores to headline November 7th PBC on FOX

With Andy Ruiz Jr. out of action until next year, Luis Ortiz will now headline the November 7th PBC on FOX show previously lead by Ruiz vs Chris Arreola. Though he and others claimed last month that “King Kong” would face Scott Alexander, Mike Coppinger now reports that he’ll take on California’s Alexander Flores.

The card will reportedly take place at Microsoft Theater in LA. Another source, who describes himself as “sometimes reliable” and broke the initial news before Coppinger, claims that it will also feature heavyweight prospects Frank Sanchez and Michael Coffie against Brian Howard and Joey Abell, respectively.

I...guess Flores (18-2-1, 16 KO) is a better opponent than Alexander, if only because he’s lost to more notable opponents. Bearing the curse of all sporting Alexanders, the nickname “The Great,” he lasted a combined seven rounds against Charles Martin and Joseph Parker. At least he tends to beat cans with winning records.

Ortiz (31-2, 26 KO) should demolish him with ease. California shouldn’t sanction it.

------------------------
Luis Ortiz To Fight Scott Alexander On FOX’s Ruiz-Arreola Undercard November 7

Luis Ortiz will end nearly a one-year layoff against a considerably less dangerous opponent than Deontay Wilder.

Boxing Scene has learned that the heavyweight contender and Scott Alexander have agreed to fight November 7. The Ortiz-Alexander bout is expected to be part of the Andy Ruiz Jr.-Chris Arreola undercard.

FOX will air Ruiz-Arreola and Ortiz-Alexander as part of a tripleheader that could be held at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The site of the November 7 card could change if fans are allowed to attend boxing events in the United States by then.

The site aside, the 41-year-old Ortiz will fight for the first time since last November 23 when he squares off against Alexander. The hard-hitting Cuban southpaw hasn’t boxed since Wilder, then the WBC champion, knocked him out in the seventh round of their rematch at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Ortiz was ahead on all three scorecards – 59-55, 59-55 and 58-56 – when Wilder drilled him with a right hand that knocked Ortiz flat on his back. Ortiz tried to get up before referee Kenny Bayless’ count reached 10, but Bayless stopped their scheduled 12-round bout because Ortiz was disoriented.

Ortiz (31-2, 26 KOs, 2 NC) has been beaten only by Wilder, who lost his title in his subsequent bout to Tyson Fury. Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) knocked out Ortiz in the 10th round of their first fight, which occurred in March 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Between his losses to Wilder, Ortiz defeated Razvan Cojanu, Travis Kauffman and Christian Hammer in successive fights.

Los Angeles’ Alexander (16-3-2, 8 KOs) has won each of his two fights since Kauffman beat him by majority decision in their 10-rounder two years ago in Lancaster, California.

Kauffman (32-4, 23 KOs, 1 NC), of Reading, Pennsylvania, defeated Alexander on two scorecards when they met in June 2018. Alexander and Kauffman each scored a knockdown apiece during the first round of that bout.

In his most recent action, Alexander overcame Mexican southpaw Luis Rodriguez (7-27-2, 0 KOs) by split decision in an eight-rounder February 29 in Tijuana, Rodriguez’s hometown.

If the favorites, Ruiz and Ortiz, win November 7, they might be matched sometime in 2021. The Athletic first reported last month that Ruiz (33-2, 22 KOs), a former IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champ, and Arreola (38-6-1, 33 KOs, 2 NC) agreed to square off at some point late in 2020 in a battle between Mexican-American contenders from Southern California.

What an awful matchmaking. It was at least a little bit understandable, when old Ortiz was being sticked to Wilder and his belt, when he was being tracked safe to have that oppoprtunity, but now he has nothing to lose and is still matched against nobodies.

A couple of years ago, Luis Ortiz defeated Travis Kauffman.

And the only fighter Travis Kauffman has managed to beat over a timescale spanning more than four years, is Scott Alexander.

In terms of Scott Alexander, he has suffered one-sided defeats against Rodney Hernandez and LaRon Mitchell and has only ever been scheduled for 10 rounds twice.

Somehow the various sports' governing bodies will sanction a horrible mismatch between the “fearsome” Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz (rated 8th by ESPN and 6th by The RING & TBRB), and the journeyman Scott Alexander. :o

Let’s not forget that the date of the Alexander bout is only one month shy of the fifth anniversary of Luis Ortiz’s most recent victory over a legitimate top-ten world-rated opponent (Bryant Jennings)! :brick:

Luis Ortiz rejected bouts against Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte. And has only managed to defeat journeyman calibre opposition within the last five years.

I believe every single sentence I’ve written contains a statement of fact, but when I read my own post back to myself, it just seems utterly bizarre to me that Ortiz continues to receive an incredible amount of praise and respect, coupled with the fact he’s pretty much immune from being criticised for facing particularly weak opposition.

I (and all I'm sure) would have rather seen Ortiz vs Andy Ruiz, but apparently Ruiz wanted a tune up first. ""Why does [Ruiz need] a tune up fight? We as boxers need opponents to help us lift our name. I prefer to always fight against people with marksmanship and not those who are below my level."

Luis Ortiz has his own team and is capable of submitting offers to his rivals.

He somehow feels that everyone has to make him offers. He never makes offers to any of his big-name rivals.

Andy Ruiz Jr. has just competed in two back-to-back bouts against Anthony Joshua and has just joined a new training team.

It's been almost five years since Luis Ortiz's most recent victory over a top-ten world-rated opponent.

Andy Ruiz Jr. beat Anthony Joshua last year.

Luis Ortiz rejected a career-high payday when he turned down the AJ fight, which Andy Ruiz Jr. accepted at much shorter notice.

Yep, that's the thing with Ortiz and his bois, it's always someone else's responsibility to make the fight under Luis's extact terms, though even then we've seen him reject great paydays

Of course, but it's interesting that the onus is always on Ortiz's rivals to furnish him with fights, rather than his own team making offers.

It's a weird situation. Some fighters like Luis Ortiz will always be regarded as being immune to criticism by most fans (barring a select few).

Apparently Team Ortiz are capable of making fights with appalling journeymen, but not against decent opposition.

Personally I still think Ruiz Jr. Vs Ortiz didn't happen because of internal politics.

Wilder is still their top heavyweight and will be engaging in a title fight with Fury, in a rematch that is going to already be difficult to sell.

If Ruiz Jr. beats Ortiz this elevates Joshua and Diminishes Wilder. If Ortiz beats Ruiz Jr. this promotes a 41 (cough) year old and diminishes Ruiz Jr. who is a marketable asset.

Maybe I am reaching with this, but I predicted the above prior to Wilder-Fury 2.

I think it is why Ortiz is not being matched with anyone with a pulse at the moment. If he wins this sets back a fellow PBC fighter, if he loses it removes the mystique that was carefully crafted.

And for those outside the PBC is there enough risk reward? Maybe if he looks bad in this next fight there will be some offers coming in.

So you’re thinking the head honchos at the PBC feel Andy Ruiz Jr. beating Luis Ortiz would adversely affect Deontay Wilder’s reputation?

I guess that’s feasible, especially when we consider the type of opponents’ Ortiz has been consistently matched up against, coupled with the Cuban rejecting bouts against the likes of Whyte and Joshua. Were they protecting him?

Perhaps the PBC have milked Ortiz’s “fearsome” reputation, exploited it to hype up Wilder and they may now be reluctant to expose the Cuban to potentially losing against unheralded or lesser named foes, such as Ruiz Jr.

Put it this way, Ortiz received two world title shots possessing an absolutely appalling resume, coupled with testing twice for banned substances, whilst better fighters were needlessly made to wait for their opportunities.

There has to be a reason for that.

Luis Ortiz Eyes Return in November I'm Ready To Face Anyone

Heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz hopes to return next month on FOX, on November 7 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Ortiz (31-2, 26 KOs) has been out of the ring since November 2019, when he was knocked out in his rematch with then WBC world champion Deontay Wilder.

Ortiz took just a couple of weeks off before returning to the gym and was about to tighten engines when in March he was ordered to stop everything and distance himself socially due to the coronavirus.

Since he couldn't go to the gym in Miami, Ortiz built one in his house. He sought the help of a carpenter and raised a ring, as well as assembling other items.

"I didn't even stop training at the worst time of the pandemic, so I feel great. I always put a lot of interest in my preparation. I won't lie to you. I spent [some months] in a lot of fear, because you know I have a sick girl with a skin disorder that thank God entered a clinic for a new treatment. I had to be very smart to balance workouts and health care," Ortiz told George Ebro.

"This is my job and this is how my family eats. Without work you can't live, but in my particular case, boxing is what I love, my passion and I can't wait to put my gloves back on. I don't mind hitting if there's boxing. The worst part is that there's nothing. Imagine, my future is in training, in the hard work of every day. The rest is taken care of by my manager Jay Jiménez with Luis DeCubas Jr. and Al Haymon. I'm ready for whatever comes. You know I don't care about names or levels. I face whoever wants to face me.

" as if I were 35. I am in optimal condition and I think that until this moment of pause in my career, in boxing, it has come to me wonderfully. I've rejuvenated myself and my body has healed any problems. All of that gives me enthusiasm for what might come right away.

"First I want to get out of this fight [in November] with a knockout and expect better things in 2021. I tell those who come up to find their merit and they have to go through a bridge and that is me. To the established I say that I'm still here, still active and that they must take me into account."

Mike Coppinger just reported that this will now be against Alexander Flores on that date. I guess that's somewhat better but not really by enough.

Hopefully a quick turnaround after, Ortiz really doesn't show enough urgency for someone of his age. Never has in his whole career really I guess.
