Errol Spence Jr.s speech

Post by AntonioMartin »

Did anyone else see Errol Spence Jr. talk on TV this Saturday?

I thought his speech was slurred. Did anyone else think so?

Does he always speak that way or can this be accident related?

I'm worried for him....

I haven't seen him talk much lately, but keep in mind he's always been a bit of a 'sleepy' dude, with those sleepy eyes and laid back speech/drawl, maybe he smoked some more weed than normal or something

I think he used to speak at a quicker pace than he currently does. If you review his media interviews prior to the Kell Brook fight and some of those you see today, you’ll surely notice the difference.

Is the reason for this due to his car crash injuries or is this intentional? I’m not sure.

I don’t want to read too much into things, but it is clear to me that he does verbally convey his thoughts at a slower pace than he used to do.

We do know a few facts though (based on what Errol told the media):

• Errol Spence Jr. was in the hospital for roughly three weeks and also hid himself from the media for more than 2½ months. He doesn’t even remember being in hospital. His only memories are of him recovering at home. This suggests his injuries were severe in nature.
• By his own admission, Spence Jr. says the coronavirus pandemic has helped him out a lot, because it gave him more time to recover prior to competing again.
• He got his teeth knocked out by the car crash and had to get posts fitted in his mouth, which prevented him from sparring until recently. That is a serious amount of time, so he might have a permanent issue with his jaw that could potentially affect his durability.
• It took three months for Spence Jr. to be able to run after the accident and he claimed he was still suffering from his car crash injuries (i.e. feeling pain in his damaged jaw, hip, neck & shoulders) when he did this.
• Spence Jr. also ballooned to 192lbs and has admitted it’s been a huge struggle to get back in shape.
• Errol also conceded that the car crash gave him a new outlook in life. Before the accident he felt invincible, he didn’t think anything could hurt him, but not anymore. And he didn’t mean boxing in particular, since he was discussing life in general. However, it remains to be seen whether he's able to overcome adversity inside the ring (based on his new mind-set).

So there are quite a few unknowns going into the Spence Jr.-Garcia bout.

Before the car crash, I would have favoured Spence Jr. to beat Garcia by decision in a closely competitive bout. But if he has regressed, then an upset seems likely.

^^^^

There was a thread on this last year too..

Spence has mostly always talked like he's half asleep.

It's as if he can't be botthered to talk. He has that accent.
