Briedis' trainer scoffs at Dorticos' confidence

“We see that Dorticos’ team is trying to convince themselves and everybody else on how strong he is, but it only gives us extra fuel and motivation to train for the bout,” said Šiholajs who became Briedis' trainer after Briedis' loss to Aleksandr Usyk in January 2018. “The history of boxing has proven that the less you talk, the more time you have to get ready and be better.”

Mairis Briedis battles Yuniel Dorticos in an epic World Boxing Super Series final in Riga on March 21, live on Sky Sports.

The cruiserweight rivals will collide in the thrilling conclusion of the tournament, with the Muhammad Ali trophy at stake for the winner, while Dorticos also puts his IBF title on the line in Latvia at Arena Riga.

Briedis receives home advantage as he returns to the scene of his semi-final stoppage win over Krzysztof Glowacki, but Dorticos will not be concerned about travelling to hostile territory, having produced an explosive knockout of Andrew Tabiti at the same venue to reach the final.

"The WBSS is thrilled to continue our work with Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports to bring our sensational cruiserweight final to as many UK fans as possible," said Kalle Sauerland, WBSS chief boxing officer.

"In this final we present the two greatest cruiserweights on the planet. The two best sportsmen of the division. Both two-time world champions.

"We, the WBSS, are so proud to showcase these athletes fighting for a trophy in the name of Muhammad Ali, the greatest of the sport. This match-up contains all the ingredients to become an absolute barnstormer and another WBSS fight of the year contender."

Adam Smith, Sky Sports’ head of boxing development, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight final is live on Sky Sports as Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos should provide an explosive showdown in Riga.

“The WBSS has already created classic finals - Josh Taylor’s titanic clash with Regis Prograis and Naoya Inoue’s breathtaking battle with Nonito Donaire. Two fight of the year contenders in 2019!

“Briedis and Dorticos will be eager to deliver another fabulous final as we add another exciting fight night to our Sky Sports schedule.”

“I’m delighted to be working with the World Boxing Super Series again to air the highly-anticipated Cruiserweight Ali Trophy final between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos live on Sky Sports,”
said Eddie Hearn, Promotor of Matchroom Boxing. “We’ve aired two Fight of the Year contenders in Regis Prograis vs Josh Taylor at The O2 and Naoya Inoue vs Nonito Donaire in Japan and we expect this one to be another cracking fight for the UK fight fans.”

Looking at the time difference, if the ringwalks are at 10pm local time for the main event that would be 8pm UK time on a Saturday night, spot on.

WBSS Exploring All Options To Proceed With March 21

At some point, Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos can look forward to competing in the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament.

For now, the harsh truth is facing the reality of yet another delay.

As sporting and entertainment events around the world are postponed—or canceled outright—due to coronavirus concerns, the last remaining bout of the second season of the WBSS tournament is determined to hold the line as currently scheduled. The cruiserweight final is due to take place on March 21 at Riga Arena in Briedis’ hometown of Riga, Latvia. However, a state of emergency declared by the Latvian government included the distinction that “public events, meetings, processions and pickets with more than 200 participants are banned as of March 13 till April 14, 2020.”

Tickets have long ago sold out for the show, with the venue holding more than 10,000 even with seats bumped out to make room for all the of the bells and whistles that comes with a WBSS event. That aspect further impacts plans to proceed in present form.

“What we're doing is assessing the situation at the moment.,” Kalle Sauerland, chief boxing officer of tournament organizer Comosa AG told BS.com. “When they made this general announcement, it's... very complicated. The Latvian government has stated up to 200 people (per event). The question is what does that mean—is it total personnel? Is it 200 (paying) spectators?

“The WBSS production is not like a normal show, we have huge production crews.”

Even a pared down version would bring closure to a season two that began more than 17 months ago, and with Briedis and Dorticos already out of the ring for nine months even if they see through the March 21 date.

“We are legally assessing what [the Latvian government declaration] actually means, and how many people we can send from the sporting side,” noted Sauerland, who hopes to have a final decision by this weekend,

WBSS Cruiserweight Final in Latvia postponed to May 16 due to COVID-19

The WBSS Cruiserweight Final between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos scheduled for March 21 in Riga is postponed to May 16 due to the current situation with the Coronavirus.

Local authorities in Latvia have adopted comprehensive measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, events with more than 200 people present have been prohibited until April 14.

In regard to the risk of infection, the local authorities have concluded that the WBSS Cruiserweight final is a particularly high-risk event, not only for the athletes themselves but also for all local and foreign staff involved in the organisation and conduct of the event.

For this reason, the WBSS Cruiserweight final between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos cannot take place as planned. The new date planned for the Final in Arena Riga is May 16, however, this is, of course, dependent on the current restrictions being lifted.

The health of all those involved to stage this historic event is and will always be the primary concern of the WBSS and we will continue to carefully monitor the situation with the authorities and the athlete’s teams.

We very much regret this step and thank all involved, spectators, fans, partners and sponsors for their understanding in this extraordinary and challenging situation. All tickets remain valid for the new date.

Comosa AG, World Boxing Super Series organiser

Athlete statements:

Mairis Briedis:

“We’ve done great work in preparation until the very last planned training, but it is what it is and we will now adapt to the new situation and keep training to wait for the green light. Looking forward to fighting in front of my fans when it’s safe! Take care of yourself, people!”

Yuniel Dorticos:

“While I was in great shape and looking forward to coming to Latvia to win the Muhammad Ali Trophy, I understood the impracticality and therefore l will have have to wait until May to win the Tournament. I want to thank all my fans for their patience and I ask that everyone be careful and take the necessary steps to stay healthy during these challenging times.”

“They’re looking at moving the government ban on events to a further 30 days,” Sauerland, who was forced to push the date back originally from March 21, says. “I think it’s highly unrealistic that this event will take place on May 16.”

“We can’t do anything [about the cruiserweight final] until we know exactly what the government is doing,” Sauerland continues. “We’ve said that at all times we will adhere to what the authorities and the experts are telling us and we will then, once we know exactly what is happening, have to push back to a further date.”

“It’s clear that we’re not going to be the only event affected by this, but it’s frustrating times, of course, as a promoter, but all we can do is go off the advice given by the government and the experts.”

Bout between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos set for 16 May 2020 in Riga/Latvia cancelled

WBSS is monitoring the developing COVID-19 situation. Under the current circumstances, a feasible date for the WBSS Cruiserweight Final between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos is out of reach.

The final for the Muhammad Ali Trophy was originally scheduled to take place on 21 March 2020 in Riga, Latvia, and then rearranged for 16 May 2020 due to the spreading of COVID-19 – in line with the measures put in effect by the Latvian government to contain the disease. On 7 April 2020, the Latvian government extended the state of emergency and the containment measures until at least 12 May 2020.

Our top priority is to protect the health and safety of the boxers, fans, officials, and staff involved in the World Boxing Super Series. WBSS will inform further as the situation develops.

Dorticos Remains Patient, Very Eager To Face Mairis Briedis

IBF cruiserweight champion Yuniel Dorticos (24-1, 22 KOs) is a very patient man.

Dorticos saw two fight dates, March 21 and May 16, get canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

He was scheduled to face Mairis Briedis, in Riga, in the final bout of the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament. Their fight was initially targeted for December of last year.

Because of the delays, Dorticos has been out of the ring since June of last year, when he knocked out Andrew Tabiti.

Dorticos is looking to redeem himself by winning the entire tourney, after being knocked out by Murat Gassiev in the semi-finals of the the first WBSS cruiserweight tournament in February of 2018.

"[Regarding his mind and spirit], Dorticós is strong in those two aspects," said Pedro Roque, coach of the Cuban champion, to George Ebro. “I talk to him every day and I know he is looking forward to what might happen. He remains focused on winning the Ali trophy and reaffirming himself as the best cruiserweight in the world."

Roque knows that, beyond Dorticós' disposition, a strong job is necessary to recover the sporting peak that his ward exhibited in mid-March, before the coronavirus placed obstacles in the way and drove boxers and trainers away from gyms.

"You have to work hard, because there have already been nine weeks of the pandemic," added Roque. "Dorticos was in spectacular form, but it is logical that [his form] has come down with all of this. Still, it will take at least six to eight weeks to get back to the physical peak that one requires for a fight of this importance.

"I have known Dorticos since he was a little boy and I know how strong he is. This has been a bad moment that has affected us all equally, but it will pass. I'm going to make sure nothing takes us by surprise. When they give us the order to start, we will return to work with the same force as before.''

Fight confirmed.

“We are thrilled to announce the date and place for the exciting finale of Season II of the WBSS,” said Andreas Benz, CEO of Comosa AG, organizer of the World Boxing Super Series. “Plazamedia is a phenomenal solution, the studios are providing a controlled environment which is of huge benefit to us and the production team to keep everyone safe while also putting on a great show.

“At the same time, we have done everything to secure fair conditions for both teams, and to ensure they remain healthy and isolated until the action starts.”

“We are very happy about the announcement of the final,” said Briedis, whose lone loss to came to WBSS Season One winner Oleksandr Usyk in their March 2018 semifinal and unification bout. “I love the fact that it will be in Munich as it reminds me of every time I went to train with the Klitschko brothers in Germany and the flights were always via Munich.

“Those are some great memories of the time spent with them there!”

“To all my fans worldwide, in Europe and especially in Munich, Germany: I am super happy the World Boxing Super Series final will take place in Munich, Germany,” exclaimed Dorticos, who suffered a 12th round stoppage to Murat Gassiev in their Season One semifinal and unification bout in February 2018. “The KO Doctor is back and ready to prescribe another dose of pain and take the Muhammad Ali Trophy back to Miami!”

Fingers crossed, going to need to record at least part of one card I'd say and then watch the MTK show back on YouTube before the Charlo card starts, will be a long but enjoyable evening of boxing hopefully.

Povetkin vs Whyte 2 ends the autumn schedule on Sky, featuring world title fights, Joshua Buatsi and WBSS final

Alexander Povetkin vs Dillian Whyte 2 is the explosive ending to the autumn schedule on Sky, featuring world title fights, Joshua Buatsi and the WBSS final.

Yuniel Dorticos battles Mairis Briedis in the long-awaited World Boxing Super Series final of the cruiserweight competition in Munich, Germany, with the Muhammad Ali trophy and the IBF title at stake on Saturday September 26, live on Sky Sports.

Adam Smith, Sky Sports Head of Boxing Development, said: "After the huge success of Fight Camp, we're delighted to announce another exciting line-up of live action, including a World Boxing Super Series Final, Joshua Buatsi and Lewis Ritson back in action, and then Povetkin-Whyte 2!

"The WBSS has already supplied some classic encounters, live on Sky Sports, so we're expecting even more drama when Mairis Briedis battles Yuniel Dorticos this month.

"Joshua Buatsi has every attribute to become one of Britain's biggest stars - and he takes another significant step in a clash with Marko Calic. Women's boxing is really booming, with Chantelle Cameron facing Adriana Dos Santos for the WBC super-lightweight belt on the same bill.

"Lewis Ritson has reignited the sport in the north east, but he cannot afford a slip-up against former world champion Miguel Vazquez, while England and Scotland also collide as Savannah Marshall takes on Hannah Rankin for the vacant WBO middleweight title.

"Dillian Whyte is determined to avenge that shock defeat to Alexander Povetkin - and the big-hitting heavyweight duo should provide another explosive encounter on Sky Sports Box Office. After a sizzling summer, get ready for an action-packed autumn!"

Kalle Sauerland, Chief Boxing Officer of the WBSS, said: "This season, we've had Naoya Inoue versus Nonito Donaire and we've had Josh Taylor versus Regis Prograis - two fights of the year in 2019, and we expect something very special once again in our grand Season II finale in Munich.

"Briedis and Dorticos are both massive power punchers, they only move forward, and we've seen them both deliver before in the WBSS. So look forward to absolute fireworks on September 26 when the division's No 1 and 2 clash for the Muhammad Ali Trophy!"
