I’ve been reading up on this fight and, despite what is posted on boxrec, most of the newspaper accounts had Corbett ahead of Sharkey on points after 9 rounds.
The one account boxrec has makes it seem as though Corbett was getting severely beaten - this doesn’t seem to be at all the case.
There was a great deal of confusion as to why McVey entered the ring twice, thereby disqualifying Jim.
It was agreed before the fight that there wouldn’t be a lot of clinching allowed (or hitting on the break) as Sharkey was a mauling, dirty fighter, and in the 9th there was a lot of clinching going on because the fight had been fought at a really fast pace.
In any case, the one account listed on boxrec distorts the consensus opinion: Corbett was ahead on points.

They put in one newspaper account which had Sharkey winning.
In the book "Legendary Champions", the fight was referred to as being even.

From what I've seen the reports are all over the place, but Corbett seems to have been doing better when it was stopped.
There's also a lot of questionableness in if the Corbett McCoy fight was a fix too, the majority of next day reports I've seen don't call it a fix.

That one is usually referred to as as fix. Why the newspapers did bring this up immediately is interesting.
Re: Corbett v Sharkey 2
When I searched reports before I found 6 saying it was legit, 4 calling it a fix or questionable, and 3 with no explicit comment (which I would take as legit). Probably some I missed.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑30 Aug 2020, 13:02 That one is usually referred to as as fix. Why the newspapers did bring this up immediately is interesting.
There were rumours before the fight
Re: Corbett v Sharkey 2
I question why boxrec states it as being a fix. There’s no evidence that it was. Corbett’s wife stated it was, but stated it right after her husband left her to go to Europe with another woman!BitPlayer wrote: ↑30 Aug 2020, 16:28When I searched reports before I found 6 saying it was legit, 4 calling it a fix or questionable, and 3 with no explicit comment (which I would take as legit). At the same time McCoy’s wife caught her husband in an affair, so she sold the story as well.
These guys cheated on their wives, but they didn’t fix the fight. At least there’s no evidence.
