I used to subscribe to Boxing News but, up until a couple of months ago, I hadn’t read Boxing News for the best part of 6 or 7 years.

I was a long time subscriber to Boxing Monthly which recently stopped with the publisher supplying Boxing News instead until the end the end of my subscription.

I’ve been really impressed with it. I stopped subscribing as most of the news you used to get was widely available online and there wasn’t much in the magazine that I thought was worth the subscription. I’m now reading it cover to cover and the feature pieces have consistently been great.

The one frustration I have with it though is the preview ratings of fights. They’ve given Yarde vs Spelman 3 stars and they gave Frampton vs Traynor 2 stars - not quite sure what’s needed for a main event to get 1 star!

Yeah I noticed that, BN falling into the old trap of tiptoeing round major UK promoter’s shows on eggshells, in case they get on the wrong side of them. It undermines their whole schtick, by not showing true journalistic integrity.

Claude couldn’t have cared less. He refused to report on FW’s.

BN since Tris Dixon started has been awful. BN is basically a cuckold to agendas and big promoters

Do you get the magazine?

As I said in my original post I’ve been really impressed with it in the last few months.

If they're not looking at things critically then the publication is of no worth, just PR, like a boxing version of Short List. No thank you!

Like the original poster, I stopped reading a couple of years back.

Resubscribed a couple of months back and what a good decision.

Real step up in the quality of articles. Thursday highlight is now a pint and a read of this.

Worth checking out for any lapsed readers.

I read it the other week for the first time in probably a good few years. I enjoyed it but then I’ve never “not” enjoyed it. It’s had peaks and some less quality times but maybe u enjoyed it because the articles were not mostly fight reports.

Tris isn’t even the editor any more anyway? He had some small ish article in the Povetkin issue the other week but Matt Christie is editor, isn’t he?

Yes - Matt Christie is the editor and they’ve also got a good set of features writers. As Gareth said it’s one of the highlights of the week now and I’ll almost certainly renew the subscription now.

I subscribed when I moved back to the UK a couple of months ago and really glad I did. Team doing a phenomenal job in the circumstances. Any true boxing fan should be supporting them at a time like this to be honest

There are a couple of BM style features in every issue these days, even had a book review recently and not an acerbic one like exshaw. bunce in there, errol christie piece this week is brilliant

during lockdown, with zero boxing, it was consistently fantastic with in-depth features on all kinds of boxing.

theyve clearly shifted away from previews and fight reports and its better for it.

as much as i love dixons boxing life stories, when he was editor he used to have constant pictures of himself working out etc was still a decent mag but the self promotion grated a bit (his fight reports were spot on tho)

christie is low key but pressing all the right buttons behind the scenes and in my opinion BN is better for it.

i dont know how you could be a boxing fan and not subscribe to it

One thing, the three monthly DD bundle works out cheaper than the yearly one, over 12 months, or am I going crazy?

Good to read the interesting profile on Denzel Bentley, who I didn’t know much about at all - but as a result I’m looking forward to the fight tomorrow night, he seems a good sort

bunce in there, errol christie piece this week is brilliant

Made no secret of the fact I find Bunce unbearable at times and a frequent hypocrite, but equally have no problem in detaching those sentiments to recognize a fantastic piece of writing and that Christie article was magnificent and moving.

It's in the best shape it's been in since the Harry Mullan days IMO, and I don't recognise the assertion that they are tiptoing around any promoter.

It's consistently good week in, week out now and deserves any boxing fan's support.

I see they gave Taylor-Khongsong 3 stars. Taylor's odds were something like 1/25.

Yeah - I rolled my eyes when I saw that. Pre fight I’m not sure how you can classify it as anything other than a disappointing fight.

I remember when I used to write for them back in the day just before Claude was leaving he had a spat with Frank and refused to report on his Odyssey show between Rogan and Sexton. Paul McCloskey boxed for the Euro title on the same night so they sent Danny Flexen to Magherafelt instead to cover that.

I always saw Claude Abrams as a bit of a tunnel visioned, determined, stubborn guy. Has huge knowledge of fighters and his tips were generally spot on, often to the round.
Not an extrovert or particularly personalable, certainly didn't have an issue with upsetting folk when he thought he was in the right.
