Benn versus Froch
Benn versus Froch
I keep returning to this as my favourite "Mythical" and just because it is so mouthwatering as a ferocious SMW title fight.
It also has the dimension I like which is that both men had a fair crack at beating each other.
And with all due respect to the unbeaten Calzaghe....this head-to-head feels like the one where the sparks would fly.
Joe would find a way to manage Benn and Froch; but Froch paired with Benn just feels like a better match-up.
I think the case for Benn is that he hit sickeningly hard and often even up at SMW, he was a fighter who could do some exceptional things on the night and he'd got right after Froch in a way others did not or could not.
That surging aggression of Benn's was sometimes his Achilles and sometimes his very best ally. I think when faced by Froch he would dispute things from the outset, close the distance and perhaps try and go for the taller man's ribcage.
The case for Froch is that he was as mentally hardened as Benn, possibly the physically stronger man and could have switched back to being a boxer stinging Benn from range if he could not impose his will early.
On balance....I think Froch wins this (but only just) and possibly by not being macho and letting Benn come at him and taking a leaf out of Mike Watson's book.
But there's a case for Benn too......just getting it right, early and enforcing his will on the fight.

Re: Benn versus Froch
Froch wins, he’s too big and rough for Nigel. He also had a good jab, which would work to his advantage. Pts I think
Re: Benn versus Froch
Froch by decision
Re: Benn versus Froch
I'd take Benn; he'd bring it too tough for Froch and cop a decision.
Re: Benn versus Froch
It would be a fight and Froch would get better of it.
Re: Benn versus Froch
Thanks guys
On balance I think Froch nabs it because he could box when he wanted to and there was always enough on his punches to earn Benn's respect and actually break up a lot of Nigel's attacks.
And as others have alluded to, Froch was a big SMW who was not a man to be intimidated. I can remember the Taylor fight where he was a Brit fighting in the US and Jermain boxed extremely nicely and things were going wrong....
....but Froch had the conditioning and belief to turn round a nightmare first defence. You would need those qualities with Benn coming out of the traps at you and asking lots of questions about your technique, will-to-win and your body.

Re: Benn versus Froch
What weight are we talking about here ?
Re: Benn versus Froch
SMW....Froch never fought as a middle.
Re: Benn versus Froch
A random question: was Froch ever cut?

Re: Benn versus Froch
Froch close decision where he's marked up and weary but edges it with just that extra bit of dimension to his game

Re: Benn versus Froch
He was hurt in a couple other fights too....but with Froch he was the type of rare guy who could get hurt or dropped and still not make me think it hurt his chances much. He would always roar back
Re: Benn versus Froch
Yes, I'm sure that's right. To eat that many shots from big punchers at world class and rarely be hurt, floored only twice and never cut or stopped...he's made of different stuff.
Re: Benn versus Froch
Both capable of winning, the Benn that adopted that low bobbing style v McClellan would be hard work for Froch but Benn had a habit of walking on to right hands and Froch had a decent one, tough call but if I had to bet my house I’d have to go against my hero Benn.

Re: Benn versus Froch
Froch got cut on the bridge of the nose in the first Kess fight
Re: Benn versus Froch
Don't like mythical matchups ,,, But will say Benn and Froch would of been a ripper ,, would if i had my arm twisted pick Froch ,, maybee just a bit too big , and just has much fight in the dog
Re: Benn versus Froch
I am the same Littlepug....
....Benn was my hero but with my own cash on the table, I'd plump for Froch.
Froch was seemingly made of titanium and although sometimes looking awkward he could finish and also box when he needed to as well. His take-out of Bute was spectacular and he coped with the hard nut Johnson well enough and beating Jean Pascal was on balance a very tidy result.
I actually feel that Ward - despite comprehensively taming Kovalev - did his best night's work on Froch.

Re: Benn versus Froch
I agree , Ward had a much tougher time with Kov, getting dropped on his ass and perhaps fortunate to get a decision it seems most thought he lost. even the rematch was either way till the end, but Ward was in control of Froch
Re: Benn versus Froch
Benn said himself that if Groves can put Froch down then he certainly can.
Also, I don't think Froch is any tougher than Eubank. The best Benn is too good for Froch. Anything less and it becomes not so certain.

That's why it remains such a good fight RocoBenn said himself that if Groves can put Froch down then he certainly can.

The A-Star version of Benn can potentially win this ....Nigel could properly pour it on when he wanted to.
The case for Benn is only an inch behid the case for Carl.
However, I think Froch was as tough as Eubank (both mentally and physically) and crucuially his work-rate was often superior as well. Benn would find alot more shots coming back at him and get less breaks with Froch in the ring.
Re: Benn versus Froch
Re: Benn versus Froch
Agreed Roco they're well-matched.....but there's more pop on Froch's shots and on balance, a better-jolting jab too.As tough, but not tougher.
Collins v Froch would be a fun one as well come to think of it.
Re: Benn versus Froch
Someone asked about if before, probably Woldemar.

I think Benn hit as hard as Froch
