Nicholas Walters Expected To Make Comeback in 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Remember big-punching featherweight Nicholas Walters, AKA “The Axe Man?” Once one of the most exciting fighters of the lower weight divisions, the Jamaican held the WBA title and fought big names like Nonito Donaire, Vic Darchinyan and Vasyl Lomachenko. The last time we saw Walters in action he was losing to Loma, quitting on his stool in disappointing fashion just over three years ago.

Since then – nothing. Until now. According to a news piece from The Gleaner, 33 year old Walters, 26-1-1(21) is back in training and is expected to make a return to the ring some time in 2020.

“The last conversation I had with him, he was fully committed to coming back into the fighting game,” Stephen Jones, President of the Jamaica Boxing Board, said. “His mind was right and he just had to get himself back into fighting shape. I’m not sure how far he is in that regard, but I am encouraged. I think he was one of the most incredible talents and enough time has passed and his coming back would have to be any time now.”

So can Walters make a successful comeback, can he become a champion again? At age 33, and having not taken too much punishment in the ring, maybe Walters can indeed do it. We’ve seen fighters come back from longer layoffs than three years (the Loma quit job took place in November of 2016) and if he has maintained hunger and desire, then who knows – maybe the rest and the time out will have done Walters a power of good.

It’s unclear which weight class Walters is looking at returning at, but perhaps he will try and fight at super-feather or lightweight. A massive puncher, Walters managed to stop Darchinyan and Donaire, while he was held to a draw by Jason Sosa in a non-title fight prior to losing to Lomachenko up at 130 pounds. As long as he avoids a rematch with Lomachenko, maybe Walters can get back to his former exciting ways. Stay tuned.

33 now. Wasted 3 years of his prime. Prior to the Loma fight he was on a roll. The badly scored Sosa fight as well, which some had Walters taking all 10 rounds.

I was wondering when we 'd see this headline. Finally making a return.

Who will he be signed with? Will he appear on small shows for now? Will TR sign him?

What weight class will he return? Lightweight?

How well has he been training. Can he still perform at a peak level?

I think he simply got frustrated against Loma and quit. The first of 4 consecutive No Mas' for Loma opponents.

Good to hear it. IMO best option is sign with Top Rank. Get 1 or 2 decent fights in undercards and then shot at Jamel Herring. If he can defeat him, then he will be relevant force in sport again. He is 34 years old, time is running out

Interresting match, Herring fought at 135, Frampton at 122, who would you favor in this ?

Frampton is probably gonna be favourite, even though he's smaller. Herring has weight on his side.

Herring is defo the weakest champion in the division. That's why Frampton wants to fight him.

I wouldn't say he's beyond redemption after bitching out of his last fight (Roberto Duran redeemed himself after his 'tummy ache' versus Leonard 2), but it will probably be a very hard sell to promote him until he really steps up.

Nicholas Walters Planned Ring Return Before Pandemic Began

According to Stephen Jones, president of the Jamaica Boxing Board (JBB), former world champion Nicholas ‘Axeman’ Walters had planned to return to the ring before the coronavirus pandemic broke out.

Walters has been out of the ring since 2016, when he was stopped by Vasiliy Lomachenko in seven rounds.

Coming into that fight, Walters (26-1-1, 21 KOs) had been out of the ring for a year.

Even before the loss to Lomachenko, there were problems brewing in Walters career.

He failed to make weight for a bout with Miguel Marriaga in 2015. And then he fought to a draw with Jason Sosa, although most observers felt Walters had done enough to win.

Jones revealed that the 34-year-old former champion was in the process of coming back.

“Based on the conversation I had with him, I truly think he is still in the sport and this would have been the year he would be coming back. When we spoke earlier this year in person, he was talking to his managers about coming back and coming back with a bang and he wanted to use Jamaica as a platform to do that. But then the COVID hit and I haven’t spoke to him since to know if he still has that mindset. But boxing was still his passion and his mindset was good and he was speaking about going back to that top level,” Jones told The Sunday Gleaner.

“He knows what it takes to get to the top and he knows what steps he has to take, so it’s just a matter of his mind and his mind was ready to put in the work and get back in the game. He was in Panama getting himself back in the right condition and his first objective was getting back to a weight that was comfortable.

“I definitely think it is possible (to get back to the top) but he has to want it. He has the talent but that alone won’t do,”
Jones noted. “This is boxing and rest and rust go hand-in-hand and when other people are on top of their game, you can’t just leave off and come back, as there are good fighters in various classes. But he is a tremendous talent, so if he puts in the work he has a very good chance of being in the top ten again. He has left a lot on the table and before too much time passes he should come back and collect it.”

Will be fun to see him back in action! He’s surely lost a step in three years, but sometimes the break can be good for fighters. Think Mayweather and his hands. Obviously a drastic comparison but there’s no reason to believe he can’t at least compete at 130 or lower.
