Beaten in Britain

Post by Onamastus »

Sugar Ray Robinson by Randy Turpin
Ghost of Sugar Ray Robinson by Terry Downes and, unbelievably, Mick Leahy
Paul Pender by Terry Downes
Gus Lesnevich by Freddie Mills
Max Bear by Tommy Farr
Corpse of Ezzard Charles by Dick Richardson
Billy Graham by Eddie Thomas
Vito Antuofermo by Alan Minter
Howard Davis and Sean O'Grady by Jim Watt
Eusebio Pedroza by Barry McGuigan
Razor Ruddock by Lennox Lewis
Gerald McClellan by Nigel Benn
Kostya Tszyu by Ricky Hatton
Wlad Clinch-ko by Anthony Joshua

Ignore Kid Gavilan getting robbed.

Who am I missing? As in major names being sent packing with an L. There must be some obvious ones I'm overlooking.

What's the greatest result after Turpin's win?

Jimmy Ellis.....Joe Bugner's best win.
Lucian Bute....dismantled/wrecked by Froch.
Jeff Lacey - much the same treatment from Calzaghe.
Mikkel Kessler - against Froch in the return, Froch got everything right that night after a bad first loss.

Love that answer. Great example of why fighters should be matched competitively even in early four-rounders - didn't harm either of them.

Plus:

Joe "Old Bones" Brown - after his world title run, was beaten by Dave Charnley (rematch) and Vic Andreetti.
Meldrick Taylor against Crisanto Espana (as OP didn't say the winner had to be British, just that the fight was in Britain).
Michael Nunn against Steve Little (ditto).
Ayub Kalule against Herol Graham.

The long list implies the big name has to be beaten by a Brit.

The Randy Turpin win was huge, especially as America dominated pro boxing in this era, Robinson was The Man and the MW title was arguably on a par with the HW crown at this juncture.

But I have read around the story a bit and Robinson's European Tour was a risky thing with maybe profit getting in the way of some good judgement.

A lot of fights on the road, lots of travelling when you could not be in the next European city in a couple of hours and there was always the chance that Sugar Ray would run out of gas/underperform and have a bad night with that schedule.

Turpin seized his chance brilliantly at Earls Court and wrote himself straight into the history books....but as much as I liked the Leamington Licker (who was actually more of a Warwick lad) I can't help feeling the Robinson camp made an error of judgement and it was a fight too far at the end of a long tour.

The worse part is that the hits will be with him for a lifetime. There will be more fights like that in this fall

Does anyone understand john_newman's contributions to this thread? His remarks all seem to be apropos of nothing.
