Olusegun-Nuumbembe
Olusegun-Nuumbembe
Light-welter Ajose Olusegun (16-0) takes on welter Ali Nuumbembe (15-1-1...and the defeat was a robbery, I believe) in a catchweight contest as the chief support to Martin Power's tilt at the vacant Commonwealth title tomorrow night.
That is a fantastic match up. Should be great.

Yes, looking forward to this more than the main event... Hard one to call, Ali impressed vs David Barnes and has looked good since, but Olusegen is no mug and dispossed of Bradley Pryce with ease.
Olusegun's relative in activity - 2 rounds in 15 months could be a problem, although judging by the fights I have seen of them (and I've only seen Olusegun the once)... I would make him the slight favourite.

Think this will be fight of the night. Ali is going to be a bit bigger , but i'd say that Olusegen has the better all round skills.
Olusegen may be hindered by the fact that he hasn't been overly busy in the ring lately, may take him a couple of rounds to find a rythum, by then Ali will be rumbling along as usual.
Its going to be tight but i think that Ali will sneak a close decision.

You can't help but like Ali, he has been calling everyone out with real intention of fighting them, stepped in at every late notice to beat Barnes imo and now is stepping in at late notice to fight a guy most people wouldn't touch with a barge poll.
Finding it very tough to pick a winner, Ali seems to be punching harder since the Barnes fight. Not too sure if anyone domestically at welter would have much of a chance against either of them.

Yeah i can't see a huge queue for any boxers in Britain or Europe rushing to fight either Ali or Olusegen, hopefully they won't end up like Peter Obah and not get the bigger fights that they deserve.Lenny Albert wrote:You can't help but like Ali, he has been calling everyone out with real intention of fighting them, stepped in at every late notice to beat Barnes imo and now is stepping in at late notice to fight a guy most people wouldn't touch with a barge poll.

When Ali has been calling out people he hasn't done it in a disrespectful way, badmouthing people. He has done it in full belief that he is the better boxer and is willing to fight them anywhere, just so he can show what he can do.
With such african boxers as Ali, Olusegen and the featherweight Jackson it shows that Africa is still producing quality boxers, they just need good promoters and managers

I guess the problem is attracting a big ticket buying following. It's hard doing so with local boxers who grew up in an area, let alone a foreign import. In some ways, Ali would probably do better going around slagging people off and playing the cocky African upstart, but it doesn't sound like that's his nature.

As I understand it Ali gets good support from his adopted home of Glossop - he is based in a caravan outside a boozer (Chado is this right?)jamesmcdonnell wrote:I guess the problem is attracting a big ticket buying following. If nothing else the regulars will follow his career with interest and buy tickets!

Gutted for Ali - looked well out of sorts in their tonight.
For all his ability it looked as though he was well short of the required fight fitness tonight. He looked plodding and without the timing/sharpness.
Having said that, great credit must go to his opponent who took on a full blown welter in there and bashed him up!
Shame for the lad, there goes his Commonwealth madatory I would assume?

Full credit to Olusegen, he is a real banger if nothing else - seems to be fit, fast and durable.
He would give Junior Witter fits.
I'm sure Ali will comeback from this, my opinion of him hasn't changed - he's proved his stamina and durability in the past. He is a solid pro, who is good at everything but maybe lacks the "special" ingredients in any department to go beyond domestic title winning or commonwealth title winning level.
Olusugen, while rugged has some qualities that could see him beat at least the likes of Lauri and the European title level fighters.... He might even beat the previous owner of the EBU title (Light Welterweight, of course).
You don't smash Bradley Pryce and now Ali Nuunmbembe (albeit with him not at the races) and not have some major qualities.

Just said on another thread Stu that I would take Olusegen over Witter now. Yes Ali didn't look right and with the time to prepare it might have been different, but Olusegen's speed, power, workrate and shot picking were all there to be admired and didn't show bad movement either. I think he'd be too aggressive for Witter and just hit him far too often. Daws wouldn't last more than a couple of rounds with him

Choked for Ali.
He's eager to be busy, they've hd trouble getting marking-time fights ahead of his mandatory and needed the pay-day.
But Ali will have believed he could win. He's not in it for money, but belts and glory, money secondary.
I just hope he hasn't scuppered his mandatory status. That would be a shame as it's his only route to a title.
As for ticket selling, Glossop love him and buy tickets in large numbers. He's a much loved member of their community, visits schools and really tries to contribute.
And you cant help but like him and his mentor/manager/landlord/sponsor etc Chad.
I'm gutted for him, though I do rate Olesegun.

Just seen the fight, Olesegun looked excellent, picked his punches well, and finished it clinicly.
Hindsight is great , and i picked Ali to win, he can still come again, hope he doesn't take the loss to hard.
Ali needs to get a good fight , with plenty of notice.
I look foward to seeing both Olesegun and Ali again.
Olesegun against Witter? i would say that Witters managment wouldn't touch Olesegun with a barge pole. and who could blame them.
Thats not to say Witter wouldn't say no, as he thinks he could beat anyone.

For my money Witter would out-box Olusegun quite comfortably, maybe even stop him but as has been rightly pointed it it's a fight that doesn't make any sense for someone in Junior's position. He's one fight away from the WBC title - there's no point in him giving a dangerous opponents the chance to make him a stepping stone.
it'll be interesting to see how Olusegun's management guide him from here - the cat is well and truly out of the bag now and as far as i can see, he's going to give more or less any domestic or even european class LW or Welter serious problems. Who needs him?
