Erickson Lubin vs. Terrell Gausha - September 19, 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Image

Yesterday an article ran on BS.com stating that super welterweight contender Erickson Lubin (21-1) would return to the ring against 2012 US Olympian Terrell Gausha (21-1-1).

Lubin was expected to face former title challenger Dennis Hogan, but Hogan will now move up to middleweight to take on WBC middleweight champion JermallCharlo. The Athletic's Mike Coppinger first reported the news.

Sources have now told BS.com that the Lubin-Gausha showdown will headline a Showtime card on October 26th at a venue still to be determined. In the co-feature bout former WBA super welterweight champion Brian Castaño will battle the upset minded Wale Omotoso.

The Charlo fight was over before Lubby could show anything, I'm pretty sure he's actually much better than that fight made him look.

Castano could well have his hands full against Omotoso, who looked very good in demolishing Curtis Stevens on the Browne-Pascal undercard!! :box:

BTW, those are usually very interesting & relevant articles you link from Boxing Scene, but after reading several of them I am just curious!!

Why dont you just enter the links as BS.com instead of requiring the reader to do it? You would probably get more people using the links and reading the articles that way. Seems like it would be easier for everyone if you just cut & paste the URL address in its proper form. :TU:

“Top to bottom this is a card that guarantees action featuring fighters highly motivated to make statement victories,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Erickson Lubin is fast on the track to another world title opportunity, but he’ll have to get through a veteran with a tremendous pedigree in Terrell Gausha. With exciting former champion Robert Easter making his 140-pound debut against all-action Adrian Granados, and a bantamweight duel between former world champions Rau’shee Warren and Emmanuel Rodriguez, the fans in Reading and watching in SHOWTIME are going to get their money’s worth Saturday, October 26.”

“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to showcase my talents once again on SHOWTIME,” said Lubin. “I’m focused on the task at hand, and that’s beating a world class opponent in Terrell Gausha. My plan is to put all of the belt holders in my division on notice with a victory. I’ve been in camp for five weeks with five weeks to go. I’ll be supremely conditioned and fundamentally sound on October 26. You’re definitely not going to want to miss it.”

“This is going to be an action-packed fight with me and a strong young fighter like Lubin,” said Gausha. “He's a good test for me. Lubin will be the fourth southpaw in a row that I’ve faced and I’m ready to go again. I'm just at a point where I want to fight the best and most challenging fights possible. He called me out and I’m definitely going to be ready for him on October 26. The fans won't want to miss it.”

Because boxing scene don’t allow in on here anymore.. if you type boxing scene as one word, it automatically turns to BS. As you can see in your own post above. Kinda like Warren being Allegedly. And box_nation.

Gausha Injured; Lubin To Fight Gallimore On October 26

Erickson Lubin has a new opponent for his upcoming fight.

Boxing Scene has learned Terrell Gausha, Lubin’s original opponent, suffered a hand injury in training and has withdrawn from what was supposed to be a 12-round main event October 26. Another fringe 154-pound contender, Nathaniel Gallimore, has agreed to replace Gausha in what will be the main event of a Showtime tripleheader from Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Lubin (21-1, 16 KOs), a southpaw from Orlando, Florida, will attempt against Gallimore to continue his comeback from a first-round knockout defeat to Jermell Charlo in their WBC super welterweight title fight in October 2017. The 24-year-old Lubin has won three straight bouts, all by technical knockout, since Charlo (32-1, 16 KOs) stunningly stopped him.

Lubin-Gausha Title Eliminator Revived For September 19 At Mohegan Sun

Erickson Lubin and Terrell Gausha are once again in each other’s way.

A junior middleweight crossroads bout that never saw that light of day last October has been repurposed as part of a stacked Showtime lineup that includes more than 25 televised fights over the next five months. Lubin and Gausha will now have the chance to renew their rivalry, as they will square off atop a September 19 tripleheader live on Showtime from Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The show will feature Mongolia’s Tugstsogt Nyambayar (11-1, 9 KOs), who looks to rebound from a featherweight title fight loss to Gary Russell earlier this year. The 2012 Olympic Silver medalist and current featherweight contender will face Mexico’s Eduardo Ramirez (23-2-3, 10 KOs) in a 12-round title eliminator—with the winner to become the mandatory challenger to Russell’s title.

Opening the telecast is one of the sport’s brightest prospects. Philadelphia’s Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis will graduate from the ShoBox circuit to Showtime Championship Boxing series in a welterweight bout versus an opponent to be determined.

Orlando’s Lubin (22-1, 16KOs) suffered his lone defeat in a bid for Jermell Charlo’s 154-pound title, suffering a stunning 1st round knockout defeat. The 24-year old southpaw has since won four straight, the last three of which have come under the watchful eye of head trainer Kevin Cunningham in addition to his career-long trainer Jason Galarza.

The last win for Lubin came on the night he was originally due to face Gausha, who had to withdraw from their October 26 clash after suffering a hand injury. Lubin went on to face Nathaniel Gallimore, whom he clearly outboxed over 10 rounds in their Showtime main event.

Gausha has been out of the ring since fighting to a 10-round draw with former 154-pound titlist Austin Trout. Like Lubin, Gausha—a 2012 U.S. Olympian—suffered his lone career defeat in a title bid. In fact, it came on the same show as Lubin’s loss to Charlo, with Gausha dropping a 12-round decision to Erislandy Lara in their October 2017 title fight.

At stake in the main event is a mandatory title shot. The winner will not only sit pretty in the contender slot, but will also have the luxury of waiting out a mouthwatering multi-belt unification clash between Charlo and Jeison Rosario, which takes place one week later as part of a monster six-fight split bill Pay-Per-View event.

Erickson Lubin's Coach Expects Him To Dominate Terrell Gausha

Super welterweight contender Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (22-1) is in the middle of his training camp for his September 19th showdown against Terrell Gausha (21-1-1).

The fight will headline a Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime card. The winner will become the mandatory challenger to the victor of the Jeison Rosario-Jermell Charlo WBA/IBF/WBC unification bout fight takes place a week later.

Tugstsogt Nyambayar faces Eduardo Ramírez in the chief supporting bout. This fight is also an elimination bout with the winner becoming WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell’s mandatory challenger.

According to Lubin’s coach Kevin Cunningham, the 24-year-old has had a tremendous training camp and he expects him to be very impressive on fight night.

“Hammer’s in tremendous shape and within 10 pounds of fight weight with four weeks to go. We have an excellent game plan and the fans can look forward to an explosive and dominant performance on September 19th!” Cunningham told Boxing Scene.

Lubin has won 4 fights in a row since suffering his only career defeat back in 2017 when he was stopped by WBC super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo.

Gausha has been out of the ring since May, 2019 when be battled Austin Trout to a split draw. He was originally scheduled to face Lubin last October but suffered an injury to his left hand which caused him to pull out of the fight. Lubin would end up beating late replacement Nathaniel Gallimore via unanimous decision.

Press Release

Top 154-pound contenders go toe-to-toe as hard-hitting Erickson “Hammer” Lubin battles 2012 U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha in a WBC Super Welterweight Title Eliminator headlining a three-fight event presented by Premier Boxing Champions on Saturday, September 19 live on SHOWTIME from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features Mongolia’s Tugstsogt “King Tug” Nyambayar stepping in to face unbeaten Cobia “Soldier” Breedy in the 10-round featherweight co-main event bout. The telecast opener will see one of the top prospects in boxing, unbeaten welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis, squaring off against the Dominican Republic’s Juan Carlos Abreu in a 10-round matchup.

The event is promoted by TGB Promotions. The Ennis vs. Abreu bout is promoted in association with D & D Boxing.

“The super welterweight division is red-hot, and the winner between Erickson Lubin and Terrell Gausha on September 19 will be in a prime position to be the next 154-pound world champion, including a possible matchup against the following week’s Jermell Charlo vs. Jeison Rosario winner,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Erickson Lubin has been on a tear since his only loss, showing his growth from the Prospect Of The Year to a top contender. Terrell Gausha has an impressive pedigree dating back to his time as a U.S. Olympian and like Lubin, he can earn a second world title opportunity with a win on September 19. Add in two exciting undercard attractions, and this is yet another fight card on SHOWTIME that boxing fans won’t want to miss.”

The 24-year-old Lubin (22-1, 16 KOs) has put together an impressive four-bout winning streak since a loss to Jermell Charlo in 2017. He became the first person to stop former champion Ishe Smith, and most recently, he dominated Nathaniel Gallimore to earn a decision in October. A native of Orlando, Fla., Lubin is trained by renowned coach Kevin Cunningham as he continues his quest to another title opportunity. After a stellar amateur career, Lubin turned pro at 18 years old in 2013, eventually being named Prospect Of The Year by ESPN and Ring Magazine in 2016.

“I’m focused and ready to make my 2020 debut on SHOWTIME,” said Lubin. “Terrell Gausha has been in the ring with a few good fighters and he’s also an Olympian, so I know he has the experience, but I'm expecting to dominate him. My mindset will be to execute my game plan and come out on top. I’m going to show the world that I’m one of the best 154 pounders out there and I’m ready to put a strap around my waist. It’s Hammer time!”

A member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, Gausha (21-1-1, 10 KOs) was born in Cleveland, Ohio but now fights out of Encino, Calif., where he is trained by Manny Robles. The 32-year-old is coming off a split draw against former world champion Austin Trout in May 2019. Gausha won his first 20 professional fights, before suffering his only career defeat in a 2017 world title showdown against Erislandy Lara.

"Training camp has obviously been a little different ahead of this fight, but we've done what we need to, and I'll be ready on September 19,” said Gausha. “This is a big fight for me, being my second chance at getting to a world title. I know Lubin is a young, good fighter and I'm sure he'll also be ready. But this is my fourth southpaw in a row, so I'm very prepared for this fight and I'm going to show that I'm on another level."

The 28-year-old Nyambayar (11-0, 9 KOs) won a silver medal representing his native Mongolia in the 2012 Olympics. He now lives and trains in Las Vegas. Nyambayar ascended the featherweight rankings after his extensive amateur career with victories over then unbeaten Harmonito Dela Torre and former interim champion Oscar Escandon. Nyambayar earned his first world title shot before earning the title shot when he defeated former champion Claudio Marrero in January 2019. The Mongolian dropped his most recent fight against long-reigning WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Russell Jr. in February on SHOWTIME.

“I am excited to step in the ring and perform on September 19,” said Nyambayar. “The change in opponent to Breedy will have no effect on me. This is the fight game, so you always have to be prepared. I was already working hard and I will continue to work day by day to be at my very best when I compete on fight night.”

The 28-year-old Breedy (15-0, 5 KOs), from Bridgetown, Barbados and fighting out of Hyattsville, Md., turned pro in 2014 and trains in Barry Hunter’s Headbangers Gym in Washington, D.C. Fighting under the nickname “Soldier”, Breedy served three years in the Barbadian military. Inside the ring, he most recently stopped Titus Williams in December, capping off a successful 2019 where he added three wins to his unblemished record. Having campaigned at both 130 and 135 pounds, Breedy is looking to make a name for himself in the competitive 126-pound division.

“I'm very grateful for this opportunity and I’m thankful to my team for getting me this fight,” said Breedy. “I stay in the gym and I’m always prepared and staying ready. I have that mindset so I can take advantage of any opportunity that comes my way. My opponent is a good fighter, but on September 19, tune in and watch me go to war. The world will get to know who I am. I’m going to give 100 percent. I can do anything in the ring, and I will show it on fight night.”

A native of boxing-rich Philadelphia, Pa., the supremely talented Ennis (25-0, 23 KOs) returns to the ring after stopping Bakhtiyar Eyubov in January. Ennis scored two emphatic knockout victories on ShoBox: The New Generation in 2018 before adding two more KO wins to his ledger in 2019. As his level of opposition has steadily increased since turning professional in 2016, the switch-hitter has scored 15 consecutive knockouts and 13 knockdowns in his six most recent bouts. “Boots,” who has yet to be pushed past the sixth round, was a standout amateur who won the 2015 National Golden Gloves and was ranked as the No. 1 amateur at 141 pounds before turning pro.

“I’m getting better every single day, sharper every single day, and smarter every single day during training camp,” said Ennis. “I don’t know much about my opponent, but not too many guys have been able to withstand my power and I don’t expect this to be any different. I’m just focused on myself, preparing so I can go into the ring, have fun, look phenomenal for everybody tuning in on SHOWTIME and come out victorious.”

Born in the Dominican Republic, Abreu (23-5-1, 21 KOs) has now lived and trained in Salem, Mass., for the last five years. The 33-year-old has battled a slew of top welterweights throughout his career, including Jamal James and Egidijus Kavaliauskas, while also earning a TKO victory over Jesus Soto-Karass. Abreu has never been stopped.

“Jaron Ennis is a great contender with good boxing IQ, speed and decent power, but this is not my first rodeo,” said Abreu. “I have fought first-class opposition and I would like to dance some good Merengue with him. I am having a great camp and I am excited and motivated by this opportunity. It is clear to me that this is a do-or-die fight for me, and therefore, come September 19, I am preparing mentally and physically to leave everything in that ring.”

Abreu-Ennis could steal the show

Upset-minded welterweight Juan “Merengue” Carlos Abreu (23-5-1,21 KOs) has vowed to use his experience advantage against world rated Jaron “Boots” Ennis (25-0, 23 KOs), who has knocked out his last 15 opponents in a row, when they fight this Saturday night on SHOWTIME live from a “closed” Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Both fighters are big punchers and Abreu has never been stopped.

“I thank God, my family, and my team – Reyes Boxing and Hector Bermudez – for this opportunity to show my skills against a great fighter,” Abreu said after his workout at Salem Fitness Center.

Erickson Lubin vs. Terrell Gausha: The Play-In

In an effort to expand the postseason without overly extending in, several sports have added or flirted with play-in games. Baseball has done it for most of the last decade. The NCAA basketball tournament has expanded them into a small group of “First Four” games. In these exceptional times, even the NBA joined the fun with a one game entry to the playoffs “Bubble” showdown between the Grizzlies and Trailblazers.

In boxing, one can make the case that any fight is a play-in. Single losses in a low activity era are perceived as more crippling than ever. A fighter on their way to a shot at even one of boxing’s cornucopia of belts can find themselves years away from their destination.

Or a second chance.

This Saturday, Showtime (9 PM EST) features a PBC main event between a pair of one-loss Jr. middleweights trying to stay vibrant in one of boxing’s deepest current weight classes. No matter what happens this weekend, both can always know they at least got to a title opportunity. For each, it is their lone taste of defeat.

Gausha and Lubin can circle the date of a shared card, on October 17, 2017, as a point where their fates have crossed paths before.

33-year old 2012 US Olympian Terrell Gausha (21-1-1, 10 KO) came up short in challenging Cuba’s Erislandy Lara for the WBA strap. Gausha came off the floor in round four to go the distance but never really threatened to win. In two fights since, he’s 1-0-1 with the draw coming against former titlist Austin Trout. Many observers walked away feeling Gausha had done enough to win and he enters this weekend with a hint of momentum.

24-year old Erickson Lubin had a more disastrous turn in his shot at the WBC belt. Jermell Charlo knocked Lubin out in the first round. A single left hand so devastated the challenger referee Harvey Dock stopped counting. Lubin wasn’t getting up that night.

Lubin has gotten up in the aftermath, winning four in a row since the Charlo loss. Both Lubin and Guasha feature prominently in the WBA ratings (Lubin at 4, Gausha at 6) and Lubin has also arrived back in the top spot in the WBC ratings. With less than two weeks until the unification showdown between Charlo (WBC) and Jeison Roasrio (WBA/IBF), this weekend is high stakes for both main event competitors.

It doesn’t mean a title shot is necessarily next but it’s a hell of a lot farther away for the defeated.

Both men’s affiliation with the PBC probably keeps them more in the mix than many others in the division but even that only slightly mitigates the minefield. Writing about the current state of welterweight a few weeks back, it was noted the PBC has “a Don King at heavyweight in his heyday level of near checkmate on a single weight class” at 147 lbs.

It is every bit the same case at Jr. middleweight.

Take a quick look at the TBRB or Ring Ratings, a fair enough gauge of the state of the overall division given the way sanctioning bodies tend not to rate each other’s beltholders. Weigh it against the fighters noted as part of the PBC family. The depth of talent the PBC has is plain as day at 154 lbs. PBC fighters make up all of the top six in the TBRB top ten and eight of ten overall. In Ring’s top ten, they occupy the top seven and eight of the top nine. Michael Soro and Patrick Teixeira are the lone outliers in both top tens. Gausha doesn’t currently make either while Lubin sits at number nine in Ring’s.

Fans have benefited greatly from this particular consolidation. The round robin at Jr. middleweight in recent years has featured more than a half dozen contests between current members of the TBRB or Ring top tens at Jr. middleweight already. We’ve had some outstanding fights (Charlo-Tony Harrison II, Jarret Hurd-Lara, Hurd-Julian Williams), upsets (Rosario-Williams) and will soon likely have three major title belts consolidated.

There is no particular end in sight.

Even with the benefit of being part of a shared tent, the PBC’s depth in class demands performance to justify and sell future matches. Gausha and Lubin are fighting to move up a perilous pecking order.

They are seeking to play-in.

Cliff’s Notes…

Juan Francisco Estrada-Carlos Cuadras II in 2020 might sound like a cold match given what Cuadras has done since the first. Still, the superfly foursome of Estrada, Cuadras, Roman Gonzalez, and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai has such a high hit rate it’s hard not to think this has a good chance of adding quality to their story...We might be closer to Estrada-Gonzalez II then we’ve ever been. Israel Gonzalez should be a good gauge of whether Gonzalez-Yafai was a last gasp or the start of a second wind...It’s hard to compare boxing to team sports, but in terms of inexact analogy, one can wonder if Mike Weaver knows how the Denver Nuggets feel right now...Alexander Povetkin-Dillian Whyte II is as intriguing in the ring as anything left in 2020. Let’s hope they can deliver another roller coaster ride...Complaints about the Charlo show being on pay-per-view is much ado about nothing. The price is set at generally the standard for the current market, the card is loaded, and it’s Showtime so one can assume that replays will be available sooner than later...If Tom Brady is looking for external motivations, last weekend gave him enough to fill bulletin boards for the rest of his career...New boxing hall of fame ballots are just a couple weeks away. Always interesting to see what new names are there to be considered.

Spotlight on Nyambayar-Breedy

On this Saturday's Showtime Boxing, featherweights Tugstsogt "King Tug" Nyambayar of Mongolia and Cobia Breedy of the Barbados meet in the ten-round chief support. The main event features junior middleweights Terrel Gausha and Erickson Lubin, while the boradcast opener matches unbeaten welterweight Jaron "Boots" Ennis against Juan Carlos Abreu. Nyambayar is 14-3 including the Wolrd Series of Boxing, Nyambayar had three straight wins over quality opposition before losing a WBC title shot to Gary Russell Jr. earlier this year. Breedy is 15-0 with ten gimmes and five decent wins in his last five bouts. Here is what Nyambayar and Breedy had to say on Thursday:

TUGSTSOGT NYAMBAYAR

"I had a very good training camp and I'm ready for Saturday night. We had the same problems that everyone else had training during the pandemic, but we stayed safe and we're prepared for this fight.

"It wasn't my night against Gary Russell Jr., but now I'm a better fighter. I was waiting too much against Russell and I let him control the fight. I have to be in control of the fight from the beginning until the end. I had a bit of an ankle sprain heading into the fight against Russell. I wasn't able to use my movement as much as I wanted. It was a mild injury, but it caused me to have a lot less running in training. It just wasn't the best 'King Tug'. I would happily rematch Gary Russell Jr. I would love to fight him again because I think it would end differently.

"I have watched a couple of fights from Cobia Breedy and he's definitely a good fighter. He's a tough competitor, but we'll see what happens Saturday. I'm going to bring my best.

"This is going to be a much better performance from me. I've had eight weeks of hard training and I'm mentally better than ever. I'm going to put on a good show Saturday. We want to get this win and move to the next step, which is winning a world title.

"It doesn't matter what kind of style he brings to the ring. We're ready for anything he brings on Saturday night. I've worked hard and I think I'm going to stop him in the middle rounds."

COBIA BREEDY

"I basically live in the gym, so I'm always ready whenever the phone rings. I don't have to get ready. We had a wonderful camp for this fight. I was originally scheduled to fight later in September, so I jumped on this opportunity to face Nyambayar when the opportunity came. I'm ready for anything that happens on Saturday.

"When I was 11-0, Barry Hunter called me to spar with Rau'shee Warren and me and my coach fell in love with the Headbangers team. Barry has come on board and given us help to get us to the next level.

"I'm never under pressure because I know that I'm doing this for. I'm doing this for my people back home in Barbados. I'm doing it for my family, my wife and everybody who supports me. I'm going to show everyone who 'Soldier' Breedy is. Me and my coach have this thing called the seven styles of boxing. People say I fight like Tim Bradley, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather - and that's where my separate styles come into play. I even have some old school Joe Frazier that comes into play. It depends what Nyambayar brings to the table. Whatever he has, we're going to match him.

"I just have to show the world what I can do. I'm not worried about how he fought against Gary Russell Jr., that was a good win for Gary. Tug is a good fighter. He's accomplished a lot, but he hasn't fought a soldier yet. Saturday night he's going to be facing something different.

"Being a world champion from Barbados would make history. It would be great for my people. Boxing in Barbados is not a big thing. It's different there. Me bringing back hope for my country would be an amazing thing. I could show kids there that you can come from Barbados and follow your dreams.

"I've been around a lot of world champions in training, so I feel like I know what it takes to get to the next level. Now I just have to show it in the ring Saturday."
