Three Fall Matchroom USA Cards on DAZN in Works; Jacobs, Haney, Chocolatito

While Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn formally announced a slate of fall fights that will take place in the United Kingdom, including the Alexander Povetkin-Dillian Whyte heavyweight rematch on Nov. 21, the schedule for his Matchroom Boxing USA remains a work in progress.

However, multiple sources told Boxing Scene that there are three cards in the works that would stream on DAZN -- one in October and two in November -- as follow-ups to the one card Matchroom USA has put on since boxing returned during the coronavirus pandemic.

The next card is penciled in for Nov. 7 at a site to be determined. Lightweight titlist Devin Haney (24-0, 15 KOs), coming off a shoulder injury that he suffered in a one-sided decision win over Alfredo Santiago in his first defense last November, is expected to fight either former unified featherweight titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-3, 18 KOs), a Cuba native fighting out of Miami, or reigning featherweight titlist Gary Russell Jr. (31-1, 18 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Maryland, who would move up to weight classes for the fight.

Last week, Hearn said one of them would be Haney’s next opponent.

“Nov. 7 is the targeted date for his return and the two main targets are Gary Russell Jr. and Yuriorkis Gamboa,” Hearn said. “Both are great fights for Devin as he approaches a key stretch in his career to become standout star. Devin is ready to defend his WBC title against all comers and I can’t wait to see him back in the ring in November.”

According to sources, the card is also due to include heavyweight up-and-comer Filip Hrgovic against Rydell Booker (26-3, 13 KOs), 39, of Detroit, an experienced veteran who went the 10-round distance in a decision loss to contender Kubrat Pulev in his most recent fight last November. Hrgovic, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist for Croatia, first has to get past journeyman Ondrej Pala (33-5, 23 KOs) on Sept. 26 in Denmark.

Three of Matchroom’s top prospects are also expected to appear on the card: 20-year-old Toledo, Ohio, lightweight Otha Jones III (5-0, 2 KOs); Staten Island, New York, welterweight Reshat Mati (7-0, 5 KOs); and junior welterweight Artur “The Chechen Wolf” Biyarslanov (6-0, 5 KOs).

Opponent could also be Gary Russell.. Meaning Hearn will probably pay him like $5m.. Also means Russell fights twice this year!!

Devin Haney Has Given Gary Russell Jr A Final Ultimatum

Standout American boxing prospect Devin Haney has had a frustrating year like many fighters for obvious reaons.

Getting the big fights has not been easy for him or many fighters.

Haney has been linked with a fight against Gary Russell Jr but appears to be at his wits end now.

His patience is running out and has told the folks at Fight Hype YouTube the following

Certainly a good fight if it can be made.

As regards Gamboa, a decent name but alas, a bout that Haney would surely come through comfortably.

Hopefully he can land a big fight before the year is out.

Same goes for the other top prospects in boxing who have found work hard to come by this year.

Devin Haney And Yuriorkis Gamboa Agree To Fight Term’s

Yuriorkis Gamboa’s latest performance may have resulted in a loss, but apparently he showed enough skill and will to earn him another shot on the big stage.

Gamboa, 38, gave undefeated two weight world titlist Gervonta Davis all he could handle in December of 2019. After rupturing his Achilles in the second round and becoming a sitting duck for the hard hitting Davis, Gamboa not only showed tremendous heart for refusing to give up, but he also showed that he was extremely dangerous as he rocked Davis on several occasions.

Despite that, the end resulted in a Gamboa knockout loss.

Immediately following the defeat, the Cuban native had surgery to repair his Achilles and subsequently began working hard in rehab. While doing so, he waited patiently for the phone to ring. Once it did, it was the exact call he was hoping for.

“Yuri always wanted this fight from the beginning,” said Gambia’s manager Jesse Rodriguez to George Ebro. “Other names emerged, but he always insisted on bumping into Haney. Now it’s going to be a reality. I spoke to Haney’s father and he assured me that everything is ready for November 7.”

The target date for their matchup is reportedly November 7th. That would mark just under one year since Gamboa’s Achilles tear. But while some may pause to wonder whether or not the soon to be 39 year old will be physically able to compete, Rodriguez isn’t worried in the slightest.

“He’s totally recovered, everyone will be able to see Gamboa in great physical and mental condition. It’s amazing how Gamboa’s name arouses interest every time it’s mentioned.”

Gamboa’s name may arouse interest considering he was a multiple division champion and former Olympic gold medalist, but for team Haney, he wasn’t their first choice.

Current WBC featherweight titlist Gary Russell Jr. made waves about his commitment to moving up two weight classes. Instead of easing his way into a new division, Russell Jr. set his sights on Haney’s world title.

The two sides yelled and argued through social media over contract details and things quickly fell apart.

Fans may be pissed over their fall out, but Gamboa on the other hand, is happy as can be to get another shot at gold.

“Yuri is very excited about this fight, now that he’s healthy and rejuvenated. We are waiting for the contract to be sent to us, but the main issues are resolved.”

Gamboa at 38 Is definatly well past prime. But given the world right now, bit of a comeback fight, probs no/small crowds, i can see why Haney would like this fight, If he can knock him early then he can kinda flex on Tank and Crawford a bit.
+ Will still be haneys toughest opponent to date.

Announcement Imminent For 11/7 Fight

The deal is done for what will be Devin Haney’s first fight in almost exactly a year.

BS.com has learned DAZN and Matchroom Boxing will announce soon that, as expected, Haney (24-0, 15 KOs) will defend his WBC world lightweight title against Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-3, 18 KOs) on November 7. The site of their 12-round, 135-pound championship match will be revealed as part of that announcement.

Jesse Rodriguez, Gamboa’s manager, confirmed last week to El Nuevo Herald that Haney and Gamboa had reached an agreement for this optional title defense for Haney.

The 21-year-old Haney hasn’t fought since last November 9, when he defeated Dominican challenger Alfredo Santiago (12-1, 4 KOs) by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Las Vegas’ Haney suffered a dislocated right shoulder during that victory, which required surgery in mid-December.

The talented Haney will return to the ring against a 38-year-old opponent who was stopped in the 12th round of his last bout by Gervonta Davis.

Baltimore’s Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) dropped the Cuban-born Gamboa three times – once apiece in the second, eighth and 12th rounds – before their fight for the then-vacant WBA world lightweight title was stopped last December 28 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Davis was way ahead on all three scorecards when their bout was stopped (109-97, 109-98, 109-98).

Gamboa suffered a tear to his right Achilles tendon during the second round of his loss to Davis, which reportedly required surgery.

Haney will make the second defense of a version of the WBC’s lightweight title he won by stopping Russia’s Zaur Abdullaev (12-1, 8 KOs) after the fourth round of their September 2019 bout at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York.

Vasiliy Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) won the WBC world lightweight title less than two weeks before Haney beat Abdullaev. The WBC later declared Ukraine’s Lomachenko, who defeated England’s Luke Campbell (20-3, 16 KOs) by unanimous decision in August 2019 at O2 Arena in London, as its franchise lightweight champion and elevated Haney from interim champion to world champion.

Gamboa, who has won world titles in three weight classes, is the WBC’s 10th-ranked contender for Haney’s title.

Lomachenko, meanwhile, and Brooklyn’s Teofimo Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs) are scheduled to fight for Lomachenko’s WBA “super” and WBO belts and Lopez’s IBF title October 17 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas (ESPN).

WBC reports Haney at 143 pounds, Gamboa at 146

Last week, both WBC regular lightweight champion Devin Haney, and his next challenger, former WBA/IBF featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, passed the first WBC weigh-in requirement. The WBC has a regulation requiring that, thirty days prior to the fight, the boxers must not be more than 10% of the limit of their division. For lightweights, that means 148.5 pounds or less. Both men were well under, as Haney made 143 pounds, while Gamboa reported 146. Haney will battle Gamboa, on Saturday, November 7th, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, in Hollywood, Florida.

Both men are returning from serious injury: Haney injured his right shoulder while defeating Alfredo Santiago and underwent successful surgery on the injury. Gamboa injured his achilles tendon losing to Gervonta Davis late last year. Haney is rated #4 in the world by Boxingtalk, while Gamboa is #24.

Haney is a good fighter but he's really got to step it up his next time out. Fortuna or Ryan Garcia would be good fights.

Manager: Gamboa Motivated By Critics To Shock Devin Haney

Through thick and thin, manager Jesse Rodríguez has been by Yuriorkis Gamboa's side.

The Olympic gold medal winner from Cuba is preparing to face Devin Haney this coming November 7 in Fort Lauderdale.

Born in Cienfuegos, Rodríguez negotiated the fight being carried as a headline bout on DAZN.

The businessman is convinced that Gamboa still has chapters left to write in his career.

Gamboa is coming back from a twelfth round knockout loss at the hands of Gervonta Davis, which took place in December 2019.

“Gamboa has done a very good preparation. The physical preparation went very well. His Achilles Heel was rehabilitated and that has allowed him to train better. He's already doing 12 rounds of sparring. This is part of the end of his career, but I don't think it's the end of Gamboa. He still has it," Rodirguez told George Ebro.

“The difference [with this fight] is that Davis hits harder, is faster and more uncomfortable. Haney is a better boxer, he has a better style, with more height and reach, but I think Gamboa's experience can overcome that. It will be the classic confrontation between experience and youth. When a boy like Haney starts out, he always tries to find that veteran who brings him a name, but I hope, God helps us, that they were wrong this time with Gamboa.

“[Gamboa] is very excited about this fight, he tells me from his heart that he prayed for this opportunity to be given and it was presented to him. He is convinced that he will play a good role in this fight and that he will be champion. He is aware that the world is discarding him and uses that as encouragement.

“He earned [this fight]. What he showed in the ring against Davis was incredible and that brought this opportunity. Do you know what it's like to fight 11 rounds with a broken Achilles heel? And it was his strong supporting foot. They gave him the opportunity [with Haney] because they know that he is a warrior who comes to fight and put on a good show.''

Devin Vargas provided a solid effort against Junior Fa. Hopefully he upsets Zhilei Zhang. They track Zhang so safe that it's getting annoying. Zhang's perforance wasn't very convincing against Rudenko. Zhang looked basic, slow and he took a bunch of unnecessary blows. Of course, he's likely to win Vargas, very possibly by the stoppage, but that's the case, where I'm rooting for the journeyman.

Did Haney come in at 135.1? Isn’t that over? Or are they giving a mask allowance or something? I mean if he took his mask and socks off he is clearly under but odd that they called it out 135.1 for a world title fight and no issue.
