Chavez-Arce III, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Omar Chavez on September 25

Mexican icon Julio César Chávez, and five-time champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce, will face each other for the third time in an exhibition fight.

The contest will take place on Friday, September 25, behind closed doors, with live pay-per-view stream of the event through the superboletos.com platform.

During the usual Tuesday conference with the World Boxing Council, this event was officially announced, which is being done for charity, with proceeds to support vulnerable people in Tijuana and Culiacán, who are suffering from the coronavirus pandemic. And, the money generated from the card will also assist with granting scholarships to young people with addiction problems.

The card will be a two-hour event, which includes a boxing function, and a "post-fight" with interviews and comments.

The main event will be an exhibition match between Chávez and Arce.

For Chavez, the event will be special because he gets the opportunity to share the ring with his children.

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr. will also take part in an exhibition fight, and junior middleweight Omar Chavez will take part in a sanctioned eight round fight. Two preliminary fights will open the show.

The function will take place in one of the lounges of the Grand Hotel in Tijuana at 7:00 pm, and all the prevention and sanitation protocols indicated by the local health authorities and the World Boxing Council will be followed.

According to Chavez Sr, his son Julio is planning to fight in Mexico in October. He is currently suspended in the United States for failing to submit to a pre-fight random drug test, in connection with his December TKO loss to Daniel Jacobs.

"If they want to resume their careers, this will serve them for when there is already an audience. Let's see how Julio develops and how Omar looks. Julio plans to fight in October in Monterrey, but he is going to do the exhibition on September 25, and Omar will fight professionally over eight rounds,” Chavez Sr. said.

Jorge Arce To Auction Off WBC Title To Help People In Need

Image

The coronavirus pandemic has been for some people (including some athletes) a moment of reflection and some have gone through difficult times.

Multi-division former world champion Jorge 'Travieso' Arce has decided to raise money for those who are suffering by donating one of his world titles - specifically the mini-flyweight championship of the World Boxing Council.

Arce won that belt in 2007 when he traveled overseas to defeat Yosam Choi in South Korea.

"I am going to raffle the WBC flyweight belt that I won in Korea, I am going to donate it to an association in Hermosillo to raise funds for the people who need it the most," said the retired boxer.

"This pandemic has made me come to the realization that we do not need so many things to be happy, the most important thing is your health, your house and your family. I have decided that I am going to raffle what I have to get money and help for people... it is to return something of what he gave me life in my career."

Arce walked away from the sport in 2014, after challenging then WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez. Arce went down numerous times in the fight and was finally stopped in the eleventh round.

DAZN add Julio Cesar Chavez vs Jorge Arce exhibition and return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to schedule

DAZN have added another card to their schedule for this week, picking up U.S. rights to Friday’s card from Tijuana, which will feature Julio Cesar Chavez and Jorge Arce meeting in a third exhibition bout in the main event, plus the return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on the card, as well.

The elder Chavez, now 58, has fought the now 41-year-old Arce in a pair of exhibition bouts before. This one will take place behind closed doors, and is really mostly just for the curious. It might possibly give you some idea what to expect before you plunk down money for the Tyson-Jones exhibition in November, which is definitely going to happen, for sure.

The frankly more meaningful fight will be between the 34-year-old junior Chavez (51-4-1, 33 KO), who will face Mario Cazares (11-0, 5 KO) in a 10-round light heavyweight bout. Chavez hasn’t fought since his debacle effort last December against Daniel Jacobs, where he barely got licensed after having to move the fight from Nevada to Arizona in the first place, then badly blew weight and quit after five rounds, starting a ruckus in the crowd where angry spectators got into fights of their own and rained garbage down on anyone near the ring.

A former middleweight titleholder from 2011-12, Chavez’s name has been about the only thing keeping him relevant since he was schooled by Sergio Martinez in 2012. He’s 5-3 since then, but has lost pretty clearly to the three best fighters he’s faced in that time, and even struggled in two of the wins, both over Bryan Vera.

Cazares, 30, is unbeaten but completely untested, never fighting higher than a club level since turning pro in 2015. It will be interesting to see if Chavez bothers to make weight, but with his team pretty much in control of the event, they can really just say the weight is whatever he weighs in at, which is kind of what they tried to do last year with Jacobs, but that was a much bigger event.

Anyway, we’ll have live coverage on Friday, so add it to a busy week, where we’ll have live coverage for six events between Wednesday and Saturday.
