Jaime Munguia vs. Tureano Johnson - October 30, 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Image

As revealed late last month, DAZN and co. are looking to pit former WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia against Tureano Johnson sometime in October. Mike Coppinger reports that the fight is currently “being discussed” and could land on the 24th.

Munguia (35-0, 28 KO) made his middleweight debut in January, overpowering Spike O’Sullivan for an 11th-round finish. O’Sullivan, a limited bruiser who’d fought at super middleweight one fight prior, didn’t figure to be much of a test. Johnson (21-2-1, 15 KO), on the other hand, would be Munguia’s stiffest challenge since Liam Smith. Aside from a 2014 loss to Curtis Stevens in which he was well ahead before suffering a controversial stoppage, his only other defeat came against the very capable Sergiy Derevyanchenko, and he ran roughshod over Jason Quigley last year. Very solid matchmaking.

Unfortunately for fans, this one might get lost in the shuffle. That day is already plenty crowded; Gervonta Davis takes on Leo Santa Cruz that evening, while the UFC offers the highly anticipated lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje. You’d think one of them would just put their card on Friday, seeing as time has lost all meaning in quarantine, but nope.

Johnson-Munguia fight is on; set for October

It’s been more than a year since Bahamian professional middleweight boxer Tureano “Reno” Johnson has stepped in the ring competitively. That drought is about to come to an end as he prepares to take on Mexican fighter Jaime Munguia in October in what is promised to be an exciting showdown. It is set to be held at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

The bout will be the headliner on popular boxing network DAZN on either October 17 or October 30 under the Golden Boy Promotions tag. The date will be finalized later. Ironically, that venue is where Johnson last fought, in July 2019, capturing the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) middleweight title in a fight against Irishman Jason Quigley. That location is pending but it is unofficially the Golden Boys Promotions’ home base, the first venue

where they staged a fight after the COVID-19 pandemic ceased sports worldwide.

The pandemic brought sports to a sudden pause from March to July. Many leagues and sports have restarted and have instituted protocols to combat COVID-19. Bahamian fighter Johnson is excited to get a chance to hit opponents again.

“Am I excited to get back into the ring? Excited is an understatement. I miss the thrill of fighting on the big stage, providing for my family, making my country proud and doing what God has blessed me to do,” Johnson said.

Munguia vacated his junior middleweight belts after moving up to the middleweight division in January of this year. The Bahamian and his team have had their eyes on him all year. According to Johnson, he does not take his opponent lightly, stating that he is dangerous, but Johnson said that he considers himself more dangerous.

This was not the fight that Johnson initially wanted. He said he wanted to go up against Mexican Canelo Alvarez, the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) Franchise Middleweight Champion and the World Boxing Association’s (WBA) Super Middleweight Champion, who is regarded as the current pound for pound world champion.

“He’s (Munguia) going up against a battle-tested Tureano, who has transformed as a fighter, for the best. I’ve been at the top for a while now, with a world title just at my fingertips. I am more eager, more determined, more driven. I am hungrier than ever before. We were preparing for Canelo Alvarez who is the current pound for pound world champion, but Munguia will do. He’s another undefeated fighter with a lot of potential. I don’t see a man in front of me, but an obstacle that stands between me and a world title,” Johnson stated.

The 2008 Bahamian Olympian has a 21-2-1 win/loss/draw record with 15 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Munguia has an unblemished 35-win record with 28 of those wins coming by knockout. There is a 13-year age difference between the two fighters with Johnson at age 36 and Munguia at age 23. In the WBC middleweight rankings, the Bahamian is ranked at number five and two spots higher is the Mexican at number three.

“Pushing my body to the brink, not holding anything back, I’m giving everything in the gym,” Johnson said. “I am stronger, faster, wiser and smarter. I’ve lost a lot of time, yet my father had always told me, I’m a late bloomer – I will come into myself later than most. I understand what he means now. I am grateful to God Almighty.”

Johnson is now in Atlanta, Georgia, training after a short stint in Florida. His training intensity has increased, from two times per day to four times per day. He and his team are looking good, Johnson said. They have wrapped up strength training and are moving into the next phase – sprints.

Before he went to Florida and Georgia to train, Johnson was on New Providence training in the midst of restrictions brought on from the COVID-19 pandemic – something he called “different”. He said he experienced a number of setbacks in getting back in the gym in May when professional athletes were allowed to resume training. Eventually, he returned to the gym after finally getting access to the national boxing facility.

“To me, the pandemic hasn’t made my training too difficult, but different. This is when creativity, innovation and resilience show up. What made it difficult for my training at home was going through so much just to get access to the national boxing training facility,” Johnson said. “Now I’m in Atlanta where I am welcomed to train at liberty, likewise in Florida. It’s not a good feeling being welcomed away from home but denied at home. That is behind me now, and our focus is on Munguia.”

After this bout, Johnson is looking to fight in December against WBA Regular Middleweight Champion Japanese Ryōta Murata. That depends on how negotiations go.

Over the last few weeks, the resilient boxer was active with his “Big Brother, Big Sister” Outreach Ministry. He hosted sessions on Zoom for young men and women, bringing in guest speakers. As a result of his training schedule, Johnson has decided to do the Zoom show bi-weekly, while he prepares for the Munguia bout.

Through it all, Johnson thanks his support system that includes his wife, daughter, mother, father, other relatives and friends and the entire Bahamas. He mentioned Apostle Phalmon Ferguson, Minister of Social Services and Urban Development Frankie Campbell, Aquapure and K.S. Moses as some of his biggest supporters.

Press Release

Mexico’s rising middleweight star Jaime Munguia (35-0, 28 KOs) will return to the ring to defend his WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Championship against Tureano Johnson (21-2-1, 15 KOs) in a 12-round battle on Friday, October 30 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. The fight will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Additional information for this card will be announced shortly. The event will be closed to the public and media.

“Jaime Munguia has all the qualities to become Mexico’s biggest boxing superstar,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “He’s tough, charismatic and has the physique to win world titles at both middleweight and super middleweight after a successful reign at 154 pounds. However, Tureano Johnson is coming off an impressive knockout win against Jason Quigley in which he handed him his first loss, something he definitely wants to do against Munguia as well. This is a veritable crossroads fight, and the winner will cement his case for a world title opportunity and be a threat to any of the champions.”

Munguia is a 23-year-old contender of Tijuana, Mexico who catapulted to the highest levels of the 154-pound division by knocking out Sadam "World Kid" Ali in May to capture the WBO Junior Middleweight World Title. Munguia then defended his title against Liam "Beefy" Smith, Brandon "Bad Boy" Cook, Takeshi Inoue, Dennis Hogan and Patrick Allotey. After five defenses at junior middleweight, Munguia moved up to 160 pounds to capture the WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Title against Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan. Now, he’ll face his toughest test to date against a battle-tested warrior Johnson.

“It’s a great honor to be returning during these tough times,” said Jaime Munguia. “I hope to deliver excitement and entertainment to the fans as the world begins to slowly make its return to normalcy. At the same time, I have been training and improving my skills with my team at the Ceremonial Center in Otomi [Mexico], and I will show everyone that Jaime Munguia is ready for the best in the division.”

“I am very happy and excited,” said Fernando Beltran, CEO of Zanfer Promotions. “With so many issues that are taking place on a global level, it is an honor to have the most charismatic boxer in Mexico in Jaime Munguia returning to the ring.”

Johnson is a 36-year-old contender who hopes to fight for a world title despite some setbacks in his career. Johnson's only losses were against Curtis "The Cerebral Assassin" Stevens and Sergiy "The Technician" Derevyanchenko. After a very tough battle against Fernando "El Huracan" Castaneda in February, the native of Nassau, Bahamas bounced back by handing Jason Quigley his first loss and capturing the NABF Middleweight Title. Johnson is eager to show everyone that he is world championship caliber.

“I am excited about the opportunity to fight Jaime Munguia,” said Tureano Johnson. “The setbacks I have had in my career have only made me stronger. Munguia is a tough undefeated fighter, but I will hand him his first defeat as I pursue my quest to be the middleweight champion of the world.”

Undercard Update

Golden Boy is delighted to present two highly competitive matchups featuring some of its best in-house talent on the stacked undercard of Munguia vs. Johnson. In the co-main event, Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis (22-0, 14 KOs) will face Alexis “Lex” Rocha (16-0, 10 KOs) in a 10-round bout for the vacant WBC International Silver Welterweight Title. The night will also feature an explosive matchup between standout contenders Marlen Esparza and Sulem Urbina in a world title eliminator.

The action takes place on Friday, October 30 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN. The event will be closed to the public and media.

“Boxing fans want to see competitive matchups, and that’s exactly what we are delivering,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “Rashidi Ellis and Alexis Rocha have spent the past few years climbing up the rankings on many of our shows. But now, they will risk their undefeated records against each other for a chance to get one step closer to a world title. That same night, we’ll also be presenting another historic matchup for women’s boxing as Olympic Bronze medalist Marlen Esparza takes on standout contender Sulem Urbina. We can’t wait to host this stacked night of action.”

At 27 years of age, Ellis is ready for the very best that the welterweight division has to offer. The native of Lynn, Mass. has never tasted defeat since making his professional debut in 2017, and he’s fought in Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as well is in many different cities in the United States. Ellis has held the IBF North American Welterweight Title and the WBA Continental Americas Welterweight Title, the latter of which he earned via unanimous decision in his rematch against Eddie “E-Boy” Gomez. Now, Ellis will look to earn the most impressive victory of his career so finally earn his shot at a world title.

“I’m finally back in the ring on October 30,” said Rashidi Ellis. “And I’m happy that it will be at my favorite place, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. This is going to be a very exciting night for boxing fans. How often do you get to see two young, undefeated contenders face each in their prime? Alexis Rocha is a tough fighter, but I need to show the world that I’m ready for a title shot. Make sure you stay tuned!”

Rocha is a 23-year-old southpaw of Santa Ana, California who is widely considered as one of the best rising contenders of the welterweight division. Since making his debut in 2016, Rocha has steadily climbed the rankings by fighting some of the biggest cards that Southern California has hosted in recent years. After defending his regional title against the likes of Berlin Abreu and Roberto Valenzuela Jr., Rocha will look to pass the toughest test of his career when he takes on a fellow unbeaten contender in Ellis.

“What people don’t know is I wanted this fight a year ago, but Rashidi and his team turned it down,” said Alexis Rocha. “There’s been a lot of talk about the future of boxing and upcoming stars, and I’ve felt slighted because I haven’t been in that conversation. Rashidi said something about how he’s just fighting another name. I can promise you I’m not just another name. And when this is over, Rashidi and the entire world of boxing are going to know more than my name: they are going to know that I’m ready to carry the sport forward into a new generation of champions.”

As mentioned above, Golden Boy will feature yet another historic matchup between two of its female competitors as Marlen Esparza (7-1, 1 KO) of Houston, Texas and Sulem Urbina (12-0, 2 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona will clash in an eight-round WBC Flyweight World Title Eliminator bout.

“I’m excited,” said Marlen Esparza. “I want to offer my thanks and appreciation to the WBC for the opportunity to fight for the shot at the world title. It’s been a dream and vision of mine to fight representing the WBC. I want people to see another great fight. I’m proud to be on the stage again with a great fighter, and I know there are a limited amount of major women’s fights, so I’m honored to have this opportunity. I’ve fought Sulem Urbina multiple times and look forward to doing it again. Game on.”

“As soon as I got the call about this fight, I instantly took it because I know it’s a big opportunity for me,”
said Sulem Urbina. “We are both with Golden Boy, and they want to give the best fights possible. Marlen and I have some history. When I first saw her fight in 2008, I became a fan of hers, until the time arrived in which I became a rival of hers. I feel that Marlen has a lot to owe to Seniesa [Estrada] because that loss opened her eyes and showed her that she’s not done yet. I know she’ll come back stronger. I’ll be ready for the best version of Esparza. In the midst of a pandemic and during a time of such uncertainty, I know that this fight, despite not having people attend, will have a huge audience through DAZN because it is a fight that everyone wants to see.”

Hard-hitting Elwin “La Pulga” Soto (17-1, 12 KOs), the pride of Mexicali, Mexico, will defend his WBO Light Flyweight World Title against Carlos Buitrago (32-4-1, 18 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua in a 12-round fight presented in association with Zanfer Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions.

Uzbekistani wrecking ball Bektemir “Bull” Melikuziev (5-0, 4 KOs) will continue his rapid rise up the 168-pound rankings when faces Alan Campa (17-5, 11 KOs) of Sonora, Mexico in a 10-round clash for the NABO Super Middleweight Title.

Lamont Roach Jr. (19-1-1, 7 KOs) of Washington, D.C. will fight in a 10-round super featherweight fight. This will be Roach Jr’s first fight after challenging for the WBO Junior Lightweight World Title in November 2019

Tristan “Sweet T” Kalkreuth (5-0, 4 KOs) of Duncanville, Texas will open the night in a six-round cruiserweight fight.

Opponents for Roach Jr. and Kalkreuth will be announced shortly.

Munguia vs. Johnson is a 12-round fight for the WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Title presented by Golden Boy in association with Zanfer Promotions. The event is sponsored by Hennessy “Never Stop. Never Settle” and “BetOnline – Your Online Sportsbook Experts.” The fight will take place on Friday, October 30 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Yeah I'd agree.

Tureano Johnson was always lower half Top 10 even at his highest moment, and now couldn't be seen as more than fringe contender.

I definitely don't see Munguia being The Boss of his division anytime in his career. He's an exciting fighter though.

Jaime Munguia Expects a Tough Fight With Tureano Johnson

“I anticipate a great fight because, as Tureano says, he always goes to the front. I'm going to go out and win, to look for my second middleweight victory and the knockout will comes on it's own," said the former WBO super welterweight world champion, in a telephone conversation with ESTO.

Munguia said: “I think it will serve me, because I had been very active as a champion. I made four defenses every year and it is somewhat exhausting; this helped us to rest and we have never stopped training ”.

Jaime described Tureano Johnson as “a fairly strong fighter, who has extensive experience in professional and amateur boxing, since he was an Olympian. We have to be careful, we have taken all the precautions, we have trained for that type of fighter, we are going to arrive very well, we have been correcting mistakes in the gym. We have worked on defense, among other things."

Of his contest with O'Sullivan, he added: “At 160 pounds I feel a little stronger, I think that is going to be the big difference. With O'Sullivan it was my first fight in this division, I didn't know what it felt like, but right now I think I've gotten on well, I know what it feels like, I have a little more confidence, we have continued to work hard, it will be great fight."
