I know it was like an overplayed record in its day, but has covid and closed doors 'fightcamp' given us the ideal opportunity to revisit it again?

Even if it acts as the total undercard to a decent championship bout or 2.

An international heavyweight one would give some lads the opportunity to get some work

I remember the very first one was great entertainment. A bunch of overweight plodders going out all guns blazing.
Was great entertainment for a bunch of lads in University with a crate of lager.
But it quickly became and pretty tired concept in the end.

I think Johnny Greaves was pushing for something like this and was knocked back on the basis that Sky wouldn't approve it.

I actually think covid and no fans means this format (for me) should be put to bed for a while..... think I want purest boxing.

When I saw the ad for the latest ultimate boxxer (for god's sake spell the sport correctly) - I just rolled my eyes - not interested..... the crowd make these events.

Yes it had a bit of a Facebook momentum but Sky wouldn't have it. They're all about quality control when it suits them.

There were fun & gave a few fighters a bit of attention, problem was it became too successful so they did too many, as is often the case.

Love the above idea of using the format to give journeymen 50.50 fights for a change & an opportunity to get themselves a well deserved higher profile.

We have essentially just had something similar with the thing that Nick Webb won.

If it’s clearly of a certain level and it’s fairly evenly spread then it’s good. The problem I think they had was that they were doing something like 4 a year.

Yes. There were too many and some of the fighters chosen to participate were all wrong for the format.

Bring it back twice a year. Only chinny bangers need apply.

Really?! I can’t remember the last time the UFC had a one night tournament - from memory the last one was c.20 years ago unless I’m missing something.

As most people have said it was overused and became fairly dull. I’d be happy though if they did one a year. I used to like them where you had some unknown prospects (I’d never heard of Martin Rogan when he fought in it) coupled with veterans who want to prove they’ve got something left.

In wouldn’t be too keen on a journeyman one.

I just was referring to the quality of fighters not suggesting they have actual tournaments .

For the most part it's not a "one or the other" type of thing (does WSB still exist? Shame we didn't see that get more of a push behind it as the concept was really intriguing).

For me it's "something to fill the schedule every so often, particularly on the cheap", and right now I get feeling we'd rather they gave us something cheap, cheerful and 50-50, than squash match after squash match.

Gotta make sure they don't over use them though

It became over-relied on to fill dates and there were a couple of snoozers (The one that Michael Lomax won, and "Prizefighter: The non-punching, Scottish lightweights" spring to mind), but there were some crackers too (the middleweight one that Murray won, and the Willie Casey super-bantam effort are the first that pop into my head.

I enjoyed it, they got a bit overdone but would love them to bring it back once in a while

It was great exposure too for a lot of fighters who would never or struggle to be seen on that type of platform
