5 PPVs in 7/8 weeks

Post by maverick23 »

With the AJ vs Pulev fight due to be announced next week and with confirmation that Joyce vs Dubois will be happening we could have 5 PPVs across 7 or so weeks.

October 31st - Usyk vs Chisora
November 21st - Whyte vs Povetkin
December 12th - AJ vs Pulev

Sometime in November - Joyce vs Dubois
Sometime in December - Tyson Fury vs ?

It’s good to have some big fights but it’ll be an expensive time to be a boxing fan. What shows are people likely to pay for? Obviously undercards are still TBC but I’m already looking forward to the Whyte vs Povetkin rematch and will get Joyce vs Dubois.

Good chance I’ll get AJ vs Pulev too (weirdly also really want to see Okolie fight for the world title) and it will depend on who Fury fights. Wilder is a no brainer but if it’s someone like a Wallin or Schwarz, and in the US, then I’ll probably give it a miss.

I won’t be buying any of them, boxing coverage on tv has been garbage for the last few years and I’m not propping up the model with £100 odd in PPV fees.

What a load of nonsense. Clearly in the current economic climate they’ll go bust in the next couple of years.

The numbers will be well down everyone is on their arses or worrying about, they ain’t gonna fork out money for fights that shouldn’t be PPV in the first place

From the interviews I’ve seen Matchroom/Sky were pleased with the PPV numbers on Povetkin/Whyte 1 and they indicated it did over 300k buys. Given the ending and the way fight went it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s more demand for the rematch. Obviously though the first fight didn’t have loads of PPv competition though whilst this clearly does.

I think you’re right re: Dubois/Joyce - I don’t necessarily think the fighters have crossed over to the casual market too much yet. Could be wrong though.

I think Usyk v Chisora May struggle although it could benefit by being first out of the gate.

I think PPV will do okay over through Covid. Cheaper than a meal out but still a bit of a treat.

Call me a mug but I reckon I end up paying for most if not all of them.
However, before I do part with my money, I need to feel that I’m not being totally conned and that the undercards are semi decent.

With Queensbury now with Tyson Fury and Dubois (and an interest I. Joyce) I recon this could be the norm for this time of year.

Add in the potential Itv ppv here and there if zChris Eubank Jr gets a half decent fight (he’s had horrendous fights on that platform so don’t count it out.)

Count me out of all of them,i pay enough for tv with sky netflix prime and disney+ im not gonna line fisheyes and snake eyes pockets. Yes they are cheaper than a take out meal for a family of 4 but im the onky boxing fan in my house so i dont justify paying 20 plus quid for a meal for one.

Should put 2 or 3 of them on one PPV rather than put each on separately.

For the last couple of years I've tried to take the high ground and avoid paying PPV unless it's worthy of the status (my only concession is accepting that all Fury/Joshua contests will be PPV and shelling out accordingly).

It means I've missed some fights I've wanted to see (Whyte vs Povetkin & Parker for example), but in my eyes they are just not PPV material, not when I already subscribe to two sports stations.

Uysk vs Chisora and Dubois vs Joyce are really intriguing fights, but they are nothing more than what a good Sky/BT headliner should look like.

I suspect the buy rates will reflect this.

Not if all the numb nuts keep buying the ppv's,this is why whyte and chisora think they are ppv fighters. We get served shyte on ppv and ppl buy it? Wtf? So normal sky shows are absolute cow dung.

Problem with that analogy, is that they are pretty much the same price as Netflix and Amazon Prime, together for a month, and to many they are a much better value treat.

Not too bad if you have the money to spend, but in the eyes of some it'll be hard to defend when £20 will pay to entertain the kids, or get you the entertainment of a couple of streaming service for the month.

If they were all on the same bill I'd consider buying the PPV.

None of them are standalone PPV fights, therefore I won't be buying any of them.

I will prob take Dubois-Joyce and Fury as long as the opponent is Wilder and not a scrub.

As for the rest, the most tempting is Usyk-Chisora but it's not PPV.
