Frederic " Pee Wee " Beale

Post by Michael Traubert »

I found a great picture in an old issue of the Detroit Free Press from April 16, 1952 page 21 Mr. Beale as he was called based on information Harry Willey Jr reports from conversations he overheard growing up around his father Harry Sr. having with friends It's worth noting that Mr. Beale served in the cornerman/trainer for both Ray Robinson and Henry Armstrong when Sugar Ray had his first pro bout in October 1940 at the Garden the Main Event was Fritzie and Armstrong
i read in a brook that Sugar kept his opponent waiting in the ring in a alter title bout while his cornerman Beale did what he did best fix Ray hair so that when he made up to ring and his hood was removed, he looked like he just comb it.

The African American Barber shop importance in the black community cannot be overstated many of the most successful
business owned people of color can trace their roots to Barber shop. Thinking out loud that the cornerman was addressed
as Mr. Beale might give credence that Frederic “Pee Wee " Beale was a Barber in Harlem. I am in search of more information perhaps the 1920's as a little man growing in the world of Stephanie St. Clair numbers and policy runner... Maybe he moved to New York more work is needed....
