Rivas' Promoter Smiles: How Ironic if We Get WBC Shot Before Whyte!

Top contender Oscar Rivas is ready and willing to fight WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in December.

As Boxing Scene recently reported, Fury is tired of waiting for the finalization of a contracted trilogy with Deontay Wilder - and instead he plans to stay busy with a homecoming fight on December 5 in the UK.

Rivas is co-promoted by Top Rank and Yvon Michel of GYM. Top Rank also co-promote Fury.

"Oscar is fit, available, ranked No 8 by the WBC and would gladly take the challenge," Michel told Sky Sports.

"Now for December I believe Oscar would be the best and the logical choice for Fury in his first title defence. We know Fury loves challenges and fights for the fans. Fury has written the best story of all for a fighter who became a heavyweight champion of the world and I am sure he is aware of Rivas' story.

"Rivas would be the best challenge and a fan-friendly fight. Oscar is in training and was supposed to fight on December 19 as co-feature on the Fury vs Wilder fight."

Rivas has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision to Dillian Whyte in July 2019.

Whyte was the mandatory challenger to Fury's title, and he was due a title shot by February 2021 - but all of that went up in smoke back in August, when Whyte was knocked out cold by Alexander Povetkin in the fifth round.

Now Rivas, instead of Whyte, could springboard to a WBC title shot.

"How ironic it would be to see Rivas fighting for the WBC heavyweight world title before Whyte who is trying to salvage his career in his next fight against Povetkin," Michel added.

"Rivas proved he belongs with the top heavyweight contenders in the world. He has the skill and he is very dangerous for 12 rounds! Not only did he knock down Whyte in the ninth round but he had him hurt in the 12th also! He KO'd Bryant Jennings in the 12th round of their fight prior to the Whyte contest.

"A Fury vs Rivas fight would be a very intriguing and significant fight that will create awareness and attention everywhere. The selection of Rivas is a logical and the best possible choice, no doubt about it!"

If Whyte won Povetkin in August, he would have very likely been scheduled to fight Fury now. That's indeed a sort of bitter irony, that Whyte was going for his shot so long and failed at probably the last step to it.

My money would be on Kabayel or Rivas. Kabayel fits the bill of an unbeaten European who wouldn't be much of a threat and Fury would be too big for Rivas in my opinion, and Warren would think that too.

Agit is a solid fighter, I rate him higher than many do, would be competitive with most in the top 15. I think he's about as good as Parker

And Arum, who represents the 32-year-old with Top Rank in the US, revealed Oscar Rivas, Efe Agbaja and Agit Kabayel were in contention to face Fury.

"Yeah, those are the names,” he told iFL TV. “It’s not rocket science.

“Go to the 15 names on the WBC list, 10 of them are not available because they are scheduled to fight within the next month or the next two months, they’re not available.

“[Daniel] Dubois is there, [Joe] Joyce is there, but they’re not available. In the same way [Dereck] Chisora is there and [Oleksandr] Usyk is there – but they’re not available.

“Dillian Whyte is there, but he has a fight coming up. [Joseph] Parker is fighting [Junior] Fa who is also there, so you end up with five guys who are possible.

“You mentioned three of the five; there’s Efe Agbaja, Agit Kabayel, Rivas is there and there are two others.

“We will have pick out, see who is available and pick it out. Rivas and Efe are Top Rank fighters and I’m sure we could arrange for them to be available if that’s who was chosen.

“I’ve got to talk to Frank and to Tyson.”

Otto Wallin Ready To Step In For Tyson Fury Rematch!

Hearing reports that WBC and Lineal Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury is looking for a December 2020 opponent, Sweden’s IBF #14-ranked Otto Wallin (21-1, 14 KOs) says that he’s the rightful choice for a rematch against the “Gypsy King.”

Yesterday, Fury and his team stated they are moving on from the prospect of a trilogy fight with former champion Deontay Wilder and are looking for a late 2020 opponent. “Who better than Otto Wallin, who gave Fury the toughest fight of his life?” asks his promoter, Dmitriy Salita.

Wallin and Fury met in a savage slugfest in December 2019, where Wallin opened two gruesome cuts around Fury’s right eye so severe that many experts assert Fury was extremely lucky to have avoided a TKO loss. The pair went on to wage an extremely tense 12-round battle, where a blood-soaked Fury was forced to dig deep to rally in the later rounds to eke out a unanimous decision victory. Fury required close to 50 stitches and had to have a web mesh inserted surgically into the horrific wounds.

“I deserve a rematch based on my performance against Fury last year,” said Wallin, who had fought just one round in 18 months when he staged his near upset. “I did much better against Fury than Wilder did, better than anybody who has faced Fury and I’m ready to take Wilder’s place. I’ve been working very hard since last year and I believe I’ve improved with the experience from fighting Fury and with all the work I’ve put in since that fight.”

If Fury’s true goal is to establish him dominance over the rest of the division, granting Wallin a second go-around does make sense. Against Fury, in addition to goring the big Brit, Wallin landed 127 punches according to CompuBox. By way of comparison, Wladimir Klitschko landed just 52 punches against Fury and, in their two fights combined, Deontay Wilder landed just 105.

In shape and ready for battle, Wallin was last seen in August 2020, stopping respected veteran Travis Kauffman in five dominant rounds.

“Otto is en-route to being heavyweight champion of the world,” added Salita. “He gave Tyson Fury the hardest fight of his life by punches landed and damage administered inside the ring. Now with having fought in August he is ready to jump on this opportunity and prove he is the best in the world.”

Fury has a lot of ground to make up, 2 fights with Wilder is a good start...but the other no hopers he beat meant sweet FA.

Rivas would mean something, Helenius would mean something, Hunter would mean something but Wallin hit the jackpot catching a sleep walking Fury on an off night. Forget the cut....Fury cried about that like he was the first boxer ever to get a cut in a fight Tyson simply underestimated Wallin l, who to be fair showed some durability, but not much else.

McKean discussed his victory over Rice in comparison to Ajagba’s.

He said, “I was pleased with my performance against Rice and I am no doubt improving all the time. I don’t have an Olympic background, I am working on the job to improve but I felt I did a far more exciting and entertaining job against Rice than Ajagba did. I don’t want to take anything away from Efe, he’s a good fighter, but I feel that I set the benchmark with my victory.

“I’d happily fight Ajagba if he wants a step up. It would be an entertaining fight. I have Irish in me, I’m a fighting man, and I know Efe is a fighting man too. So I’d be happy for us to get this fight on. It would be a great fight and entertaining fight but there would only be one winner and that’s Demsey McKean.”
