Mitchell Smith set for dramatic comeback

Mitchell Smith (15-1, 8 KOs) announced on his social media channels on October 15: "Announcement after 3 and a half years out the ring I've just received a phone call from the British boxing board of control that have granted me and my professional boxing licence I'm looking forward to doing it properly this time round making sure I'm living the right lifestyle and being dedicated to the sport thank you all for your continuous support I promised myself as a child I will be world champion. The hard work starts now."

The 27-year-old from Harrow Weald hasn't fough in a professional ring since May 2017. A former WBO Inter-Continental super-featherweight champion was banned from boxing professionally until July 11 this year. On the expiry of the suspension, Smith began training with Barry Smith at West Ham ABC to join younger brother Jez.

Following his sole career defeat to Londoner George Jupp (15-3, 4KOs) in 2015, Smith joined Adam Booth's stable in May 2016, enjoying two facile wins when rebuilding from his humbling before disaster struck when an incident in a pub ultimately confined him to prison for seven months for Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) with intent and Affray. This was when his boxing license was suspended, as is typical in situations like this.

The 'Baby Faced Assassin' is planning on gatecrashing the super-featherweight division once again, "First fight... 10-stone-ish. Head down to super-feather first four to five fights. I want to enjoy before beating the big guns."

Those big guns he talks about are in abundance in the 130lbs division right now, including undefeated WBO European champion Archie Sharp (19-0, 9 KOs); Welsh Wizard Joe Cordina (11-0, 7 KOs); former British champion Sam Bowen (15-1, 11 KOs), who shares an identical record with Smith; as well as hard-hitting Anthony Cacace (18-1, 7 KOs); and the skilful Zelfa Barrett (24-1, 15KOs).

He also commented that he doesn't expect to fight this year.

Would like to see him make a good go of it. Sounds like he's grown up a bit.

If I was him I'd forget about being 15-1 and pretend that I'd just turned pro at 27. Try and box regularly, difficult at the moment I know, and spend a year getting weight off and fighting regular. Get to 8-0 in career two and start looking at stepping up a bit.
