Frankie Gomez - What's happened?

Last May on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan undercard at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Frankie Gomez won a clear-cut ten round unanimous decision over veteran Mauricio Herrera.

But the undefeated welterweight contender has not fought since. In fact, he hasn't been at the Wild Card Boxing Club to train with Freddie Roach in months.

Roach last saw 'the Pitbull' back in the early fall before taking off to work with Manny Pacquiao as he prepared for his November 5th contest against Jessie Vargas.

"I went to the Philippines and I said, 'I'll see you when I get back' and I still can't find him," said Roach, on Friday afternoon while an in-studio guest of Mario Lopez on 'the 3 Knockdown Rule' podcast. "It's a shame, it's a waste of talent but it's his choice."

The accomplished trainer believed Gomez was the goods.

"Frankie Gomez was my next superstar," said Roach, who added. "I mean, I didn't like putting him in with Pacquiao sometimes. Only a couple of days a week, not every day because he was that dominant. He's a great prospect, he can hang with anybody in the world. But geez, I'd hate to see what kind of weight class he's in now."

Gomez had various issues with weight and training that caused him to be inactive from July 2014 to October 2015. In May of 2015 an HBO televised fight with Humberto Soto was canceled by the local commission after Gomez came in six pounds over the contracted weight. Before the win over Herrera, he was active last February with a ten round decision over Silverio Ortiz.

On May 7th, Frankie Gomez blanked Mauricio Herrera over ten rounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was featured as part of the Saul Alvarez-Amir Khan HBO Pay-Per-View undercard. He's now in the process of training again at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California.

"He's doing good, he's showing up everyday," said his trainer, Freddie Roach, in a recent interview with BS.com.

"He went six rounds yesterday, his weight's still a little bit heavy we're trying to make that go right now. But he's still about 160 pounds but he's doing well in sparring. I want him at 145 (pounds) for his next fight."

After the victory over Herrera, Gomez (21-0, 13 KO's) promised Roach he'd be back in the gym within a week. Well, that didn't occur and he was absent from the Wild Card for a few months

"He acts like a world champion and world champions can take time off for big fights and so forth. He was in a big fight, yes, but he's not a world champion. So I was disappointed, yes."

As for when he'll be in action again, Golden Boy Promotions will most likely want to check his weight (as they did before his last fight) before scheduling anything for him.

"I would say we have at least two months to get ready,"stated Roach.

It's been about two months since trainer Freddie Roach has seen Frankie Gomez, who on May 7th conclusively defeated Mauricio Herrera as part of the Saul Alvarez-Amir Khan undercard at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Gomez has had his fair share of issues over the years, including an incident last May, when he missed the contracted weight by over 6-pounds for an HBO televised fight with Humberto Soto - leading to the fight getting canceled.

"I haven't seen him unfortunately, I'm a little disappointed. After his last fight he told me, 'I'll see you at the gym in five days' and that was the new rule and I haven't seen him since. I'm a little disappointed because Frankie is a great fighter and I think he's just missing out. He has a lot of potential," Roach told BS.com.

When asked if he's running out of patience with the 24-year old from East Los Angeles, who now has a record of 21-0 (13 KO's) Roach responded with a chuckle:

"They've called a couple of times and they said he'd be here on Monday - and that was two Mondays ago. But the thing is I like Frankie but we've got to find out why. Why is this happening? Why doesn't he get back right away so he can get ready for another fight and get an opponent right away."

The fight with Herrera was a welterweight contest but Roach has made it clear in the past he prefers Gomez to fight at 140.

"He's one of those guys we've got to get active right away and so forth," continued Roach. "Golden Boy knows that but we're running into the same problems. If he's not here we can't get ready."

Word is that Golden Boy Promotions would like to have another meeting with Gomez (and weigh him in person) before scheduling his next fight.

Looks like Pitbull has "settled" into the vato loco life back in East LA. Maybe he should visit Andy Ruiz down in Imperial County for some conditioning tips!!
