Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
Part of the problem with trying to look at fights between the best guys is that many of the ratings seem to be based on speculation because the perceived top heavyweights generally refuse to fight each other.
For example going into the fight with Lennox Lewis Mike Tyson was ranked around 3 by Ring Magazine. But the evidence for him being a top 10 heavyweight let alone number 3 doesn't seem very compelling. Going into the fight he had beaten Brian Nielsen and he subsequently beat Clifford Etienne. But that hardly seems like compelling evidence he was a top 10 heavyweight given there are guys outside the top 10 I would pick to beat both. His rating seems to be largely based on being Mike Tyson and his exploits years earlier. But who Tyson was capable of beating in 1987 or 1988 doesn't necessarily translate to what he could do in 2002.
People are free to believe he was one of the best heavyweights in the world against Lewis despite being obviously faded but this seems to be down to guesswork.

Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
Also, it depends how were defining an era.
If we say an era is 10 years than 2012/13-2022/23 might be able to compete talent wise with any prior era. By 2022 guys who are still prospects now like Jalolov, Hrgovic, Dubois, Ajagba, Sirenko should be fully developed. Combine them with the old guard like Wladimir Klitschko, Tyson Fury, etc it should be a hard era to beat H2H.
It remains to be seen if big fights are made. But that doesn't really have a baring on how the era stacks up H2H

90s v 2015s-on wards
It's not even close.
Though I will grant you that Heavyweight Boxing is more exciting now than it was in the 10 or 12 years that preceeded 2016 or so.
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
so we were saying the same thing deppens if the fights get maid but with the corna not looking great
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
I was honestly surprised it stayed close for a day or two, but yeah the final poll definitely shakes down the way I figured.
The current era can still go down as one of the better Heavyweight eras if we get all the big fights.
Fury vs Joshua and Joshua vs Wilder have to happen.

Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
When exactly does the current era stretch from anyway, 2015?
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
Yeah. From the moment the Gypsy King dethroned Klitschko.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 22:08 When exactly does the current era stretch from anyway, 2015?
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
well we have a few big fights coming up fights so keep voting people,
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
Yep. The Klitschko title reign was so long that "The Klitschko era" is the one in between the 90's era and the current era.DrDuke wrote: ↑25 Jun 2020, 03:39Yeah. The early 2000's still felt a little bit like the conclusion of the 90's.
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
Agreed. This is what needs to be written on the Timeline of Boxing. There’s the Klitschko Era, and there’s “now.”DrDuke wrote: ↑25 Jun 2020, 03:39Yeah. Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
Well if we say the current era only starts in 2015 we no longer have Vitali, prime Wlad, prime Chagaev, prime Arreola and other guys who were still active and prime in 2012 to 2014.
On the other hand it gives prospects like Dubois, Hrgovic, Ajagba, Sirenko etc more time to develop and establish their legacies so it might represent a net gain. Also hopefully some more talented guys will turn pro in the coming years.

Right, the period until Lewis' retirement has always been accepted by me as a conclusion to the 90s.gilgamesh wrote: ↑10 Jul 2020, 19:06Yep. Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
This era is worst Heavyweight era ....with too much talking back and forth between 3 heavyweight .
They never take best opponents, just title fight with big money, because they have no choice.

Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
There're at least three of them and already two matches among them are held. While in the previous era there were two top guys, who weren't supposed to fight each other at all (for logical reason though), so the era was looking like a hegemony of some single entity.
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
I'd definitely take this era over the previous one.
I can't remember hardly any entertaining heavyweight fights happening between Vitali fighting Sanders in 2004 and Wladimir fighting Wach in 2012. There must have been some but not many, Povetkin/Huck was good.
Re: Better era of Heavyweight Boxing
90's:
Old Holmes
Tyson (not at his height anymore)
Lennox Lewis (In prime)
Holyfield (past prime)
Bowe (in prime)
Old Foreman
Michael Moorer
Ray Mercer
Tommy Morrison
Ike Ibeabuchi
Even though some of these guys were past prime or straight old I still think 90's hwt was much better than the 2000's & 2010's and probably will be better than the 2020's.
