Robert Smith must resign
Re: Robert Smith must resign
Does anyone else remember Robert Smith stunning Lloyd Honeyghan with a big left hook? Honeyghan had just opened up with a spectacular barrage of hooks when Smith brought over the left hook.
Re: Robert Smith must resign
Robert Smith has a difficult job. Remember he's the Board secretary, he doesn't make decisions, that's the responsibility of the Directors, which means he can't make any moves regarding Terry O'Connor. I think I'm right in this but perhaps somebody can correct me.
He's a full time employee which means that he's become the 'face' of the Board, but apart from authorised administrative functions he's virtually powerless. This means of course that he gets a lot of stick from everybody with a grievance. He'd be perfectly within his rights to refuse any interview and respond with a ' no comment'.
I'm certain that he has boxing, and particularly, boxers, at heart. On a daily basis he has to make decisions which go against the wishes of multi millionaire promoters, and that can't be easy.
Robert Smith is in the same position as the Editor of the Boxing News in that there is no such thing as a 'free meal', I'm sure people will understand my meaning.
The referee situation is different. It's a 'closed shop'. There must be a non -referee person appointed to oversee their functions and selection and I'd accept the need to appoint trained judges and remove the A Star referees from this role.

Well someone needs to be held to account for the awful officiating that's been going on in this country for too long, UK judging is horrendous, remember theres plenty of shocking scorecards that are forgot about because the right mans won, it's a disgrace and ruining the game, ive got a mate who's gave up watching because of it, too many people accepting it as the norm, I've had loads of shocking cards myself over the years but I'm not a professional judge but I know im better than Terry and IJL, they are hopeless , refs have to make split second decisions, judges dont

Re: Robert Smith must resign
I thought it was a poor interview by Smith. Indirectly the armchair judges pay his wages so he should at least show a little thought in his comments about them. Of course there are clueless opinionated idiots watching via a screen but you didnt have to be a rocket scientist to know:
A. Who won that fight
B. A judge looking at his phone during a bout is a very very serious matter indeed.
He doesnt have to say what his actions will be, he just needs to say that things were not seen in a good light that night and the appropriate investigation will take place and the findings made public. Inline with transparency.

I'd like to see that bout. Smith took that fight as a late replacement if I remember rightly from his interview with Tris Dixon.
I understood Smith was holding his own with Honeyghan before injuries blighted him again.
I'd really recommend the Smith interview. Especially for those all piling into him at the moment.
As Coco says, Smith IS a good bloke, but he wont be pushed around and forced into selling out his staff and saying what people want him to say. That may not please some, but Smith has got backbone.

The fight with Honeyghan is on youtube - He hurt his hand and didn't come out for the 7th
I think Terry O'conner would have had him 6 rounds up

Re: Robert Smith must resign
Honeyghan bossed Smith in sparring at the Terry Lawless gym in Canning Town and had a casual air about their fight at the Albert Hall in 1985, picking off the aggressive, hard-hitting Smith for the most part. In the sixth round, Honeyghan stepped up the pressure with a barrage of hooks from both hands but Robert covered up well and suddenly pulled out a big left hook that clearly shook Honeyghan and forced him to grab on. It was the first time I had ever seen Honeyghan grab an opponent like that. Lloyd showed more restraint for the remainder of the round when Smith was surprisingly pulled out by his father, Andy, with a damaged right shoulder. A phenomenal ticket-seller, Robert didn't fight again for a year so the injury was kosher.

Re: Robert Smith must resign
Didn't really seem too bothered by the shot tbh. tbf it looked like he gave it a good go , just well out of his league
Re: Robert Smith must resign
Just watched his fight with Honeyghan for the first time and Smith acquitted himself very well at just 22 and taking the fight very late.
Lloyd was fresh off his stunning European title win over Rosi, so full of confidence but Smith kept coming back at the more experienced Honeyghan with solid punches.
Lloyd was always just a move or two ahead and landed a ton of upper cuts in the 6th, but an entertaining fight to watch.

Re: Robert Smith must resign
I didn't realize it was on youtube and my memory has a habit of playing tricks on me these days. Anyway, Smith's dicky shoulder eventually cost him his whole career because it went time and again and he finally gave up the ghost after retiring at the end of the fifth round against Newton Barnett in 1989, in a fight he was winning. Harry Mullan, who liked a flutter, read Smith's lips in the corner at the end of round three: "My shoulder's gone." He quickly placed a few notes on Barnett with a ringside bookie (ringside betting was illegal but it still went on back then) and cashed in a couple of rounds later when Andy Smith pulled his son out. Andy is best known as the manager of Joe Bugner and Dave Green.

The sad thing is, it’s expected.
Re: Robert Smith must resign
Is there anyone who still thinks O'Conner was looking at a piece of paper in his hand?... Yes there are pics of him with paper in his hand but he was doing this and holding it in his left hand after he had been rumbled. Im not sure if anyone gave him a between round 'tip off' that he had been spotted on TV with his phone so he was back peddaling.
The phone pic is very clear indeed....silver edged black phone.
The pics of paper are clearly paper.
He has been well and truly rumbled, we eagerly await the result of the BBBCs alledged investigation.

I know in Korea there's like 6 bodies, is that possible in the UK? What's REALLY different between BBBofC, BIBA and white collar? At the end of the day...
Re: Robert Smith must resign
Yeah if licence holders etc are not happy with the board why not get a licence off BIBA or the EBF etc Or various white collar organisations ? There are lots of other options availableBoxing Prospect wrote: ↑23 Oct 2020, 20:19I know in Korea there's like 6 bodies, is that possible in the UK?
