DAZN Launches in the UK During December!

Post by Enlightened-One »

"DAZN will launch their 'Netflix of sport' in the UK in December - priced at £1.99 a month with a focus on boxing and an eye on future Premier League rights... but British viewers WON'T be able to watch Anthony Joshua on it like the rest of the world"

• Luke Campbell's fight with Ryan Garcia will mark DAZN's launch in the UK
• Sports fans will initially be able to get the subscription service for £1.99 a month
• Anthony Joshua's fight with Kubrat Pulev is on DAZN but won't be shown in UK
• Campbell and Garcia's intriguing lightweight clash in the US is on December 5

Luke Campbell’s lightweight clash with Ryan Garcia on December 5 will mark the long-awaited launch of DAZN in the UK and around the world.

The streaming service, dubbed the ‘Netflix of sport’, hopes to break the stranglehold of pay-per-view in British boxing. And starting on December 1, the subscription service will initially charge no more than £1.99 a month when they expand to more than 200 territories.

Their first showpiece event will be on the same night as Tyson Fury’s scheduled heavyweight homecoming on BT Sport but there are plans to ensure the main events will not clash, with Campbell vs Garcia expected to start around midnight in the UK.

The following week, in all territories except for the UK and Ireland, Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title defence against Kubrat Pulev will also be shown on DAZN. AJ is still under contract with Sky Sports in Britain.

As reported by Sportsmail, DAZN had initially planned to join the UK market on May 2, with a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders slated as the first fight on the platform.

But coronavirus put those plans on hold as boxing’s calendar was thrown into disarray and disputes arose between Canelo, DAZN and his promoters Golden Boy over the Mexican’s next opponent.

Now, the intriguing lightweight battle between London 2012 gold medallist Campbell and Garcia, a rising American star, will mark the start of their coverage in Britain and elsewhere.

DAZN currently broadcasts a range of sports in Brazil, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, Italy, Japan and the US.

Back in 2018, they joined forces with Eddie Hearn in a $1billion deal as he launched his Matchroom USA venture across the pond.

They have since signed some of the biggest names in the sport, such as Canelo and Gennady Golovkin.

Initially in the UK they will focus on boxing but it's understood DAZN hold a long-standing ambition to move into other sports, such as Premier League football.

‘From the UK to Mexico to Australia, we’ve seen an encouraging level of interest in our key events since first launching in 2016,’ said DAZN EVP Joseph Markowski. ‘We’re looking forward to introducing the DAZN platform around the world this December with an exciting schedule of fights.’

I’m not sure what I think of this.

Unfortunately for me, I’ve become increasingly disillusioned with the commercial aspect of boxing.

It’s become a sport you pretty much have to pay for each bout you watch (unless you resort to illegal streams).

And there are too many networks covering the sport in the UK, such as Sky, BT, ITV, Channel 5, Box-Nation, FITE TV, Premier Sports etc.

Of course, people will claim that the monthly subscription fee for DAZN is dirt cheap. And it is.

However, this will only be a temporary introduction price, with there being an inevitable and significant hike in the monthly fee, when DAZN attempts to secure the licensing rights to cover other sports that are more popular in the UK.

Like I said before, I really don’t know what to think about this.

On a side note: Matchroom’s deal with Sky is due to expire next year. And I wonder whether Eddie Hearn will remain loyal or will jump ship to DAZN?

Wasn't there going to be a matchroom Germany at one point?

I haven’t checked, but I doubt it.

Matchroom has had a boxing content partnership with the Sauerland’s for quite a long time.

They’re on really good terms.

I don’t think they’d attempt to burn bridges with one of their long-term business partners.

Estrada/cuadras was bad ass. Pretty sure that's the only thing I've watched since my automatic renewal in June.

I'm sure it would've been an entertaining fight.

Unfortunately for me it came a week after the WBC killed Boxing.

That still cracks me up. You lived through 4 wba champs at the same time. I rarely watch heavyweights anyway.

Think you'd be surprised by how much free (as in legal and free) international boxing content is out there.

Over the next few weeks there are live free cards from:
Tantelecom and Nakornluang (Thailand) on their YouTube channels
Watanabe (Japan) Kyoguchi's YouTube channel will stream his bout
Asign boxing, Japan Boxing Directory*, and TV Osaka have all picked up Japanese cards for November
RCC stream their cards on YouTube
IFL stream the MTK cards for free

Whilst they aren't in English it is, generally, a lot more competitive than the shit Hearn and Warren serve us

*Been a cool as fornicate story this one, the guy that runs it got in touch with a promoter and will be personally buying the rights to the show on November 29th.

Have you stopped caring, because you’ve previously claimed that you’d never watch boxing again, due to your belief the WBC killed the sport (or at least your interest in it) when they introduced the new 224lbs weight division?

Yep. Don't give a sh*t who fights anymore. Wouldn't pay a dime to watch Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua at this point.

Until the 224 pound division ceases to exist Boxing is dead. It's Legacy thoroughly pissed upon by the WBC, and fans like you who wanted this to happen.

In my eyes, you’re probably overreacting, but I guess it’s your prerogative to feel that way.

I'm definitely not overreacting. You and the Boxing world at large are underreacting. That's why the sport is a joke, and an afterthought to the average Sports fan.

I do, I just don't see how the WBC creating a new division is making much of a dent. The irony is that you are giving the new division far more credit than the rest of us by being this affected it by it. That seems to be lost on you.

It is the ruin of Heavyweight Boxing.

Why wouldn't I be affected by it? Why aren't you?

I really like them,
They're smart and ahead of their time.
I'm not doing a sell, I subscribe to them and so far they have delivered beyond my expectations.
I'm not blown away, the boxing content could up it's game but they show all the signs of a team that wants to get there.

How do you not? Oleksandr Usyk who is the most interesting Title challenger outside of a Fury/Joshua unification bout would now be a Super Cruiserweight. You think that's a good idea?

It's his final straw. Obviously much worse around, just his breaking point. This doesn't bother me at all.
