Joe Louis vs Joe Frazier

Post by DrDuke »

Prime vs prime, 15 rounds.

I'd pick Frazier to win by the late stoppage.

Louis was more composed, his punches were shorter, he would be winning the fight early against slow starter Frazier, but Frazier would gradually take over. Both were durable and tough, while Frazier edged with these qualities and he also had a better chin, as Frazier had never been literally out, even against Foreman, and Louis was out cold for a couple of times. Louis got caught and decked quite often, he wouldn't be able to avoid Frazier's best shots with all relentless pressure and workrate of Smokin' Joe. So, I'd pick Frazier to stop Louis in about 10-13 rounds.

Whom would you pick to win, how and why?

50-50 fight. I could see Louis stopping Frazier very early, a la Foreman in Jamaica. Or, I wouldn't be surprised if Frazier was too relentless for him and stopped Louis . Frazier was much better than anyone that Louis ever beat, but having said that, if I had to bet than my money is on Louis.

If Frazier can get Louis into late rounds, he has a shot. My opinion is that Louis, as a Boxer-Puncher, uses his puncher/slugger side and takes Frazier out early. I doubt if Frazier sees round #6.

It would be hard to beat the Smokin' Joe of The Fight of the Century.

I will pick Smokin' Joe by TKO in 9

Frazier being a slow starter would get hammered early on. Possibly dropped a few times, and he'd have to fight from behind to get back into the fight.

He would get back into the fight, and make it competitive, but I don't think he'd catch all the way up. I think Louis would be more effective at being able to nullify Frazier's best offensive weapons than Frazier would be at nullifying his so I think he'd win a hard fought fight, but it'd be a war.

Joe Louis by early knockout. As stated earlier Joe Frazier was a slow starter and Joe Louis started quick. Louis with his pinpoint accuracy and deadly combinations takes it to Frazier and stops him in 3-4 rounds. If the fight goes 15 rounds and then Frazier outlasts and outpoints him.

Did the great Joe Louis ever weigh in over 200lbs in his prime?

Yes. Most of the fights Joe had in his prime were above 200 pounds.
