Incorrect result for Subriel Matias vs. Malik Hawkins

Post by Squared.circle89 »

It's listed as a sixth-round RTD at 3:00, it was stopped by the referee at the beginning of the seventh (on advice from the ringside doctor) at 0:01.

But that is how we record such wins. RTD means that the winning fighter gets added one KO to his record. :TU:

I thought RTD was specifically when a fighter retires in the corner? As far as I'm aware, sanctioning bodies and commissions record any referee stoppage due to injury as a TKO. As for the round and time, the fight wasn't stopped between rounds; the bell rang to signal the start of the seventh round, at which point the referee immediately called "time" to allow the ringside doctor to examine Hawkins. Additionally, Jimmy Lennon Jr also announced the result as a TKO at 0:01 of the seventh round.

Well, in this case, BoxRec differs from anyone else. Also in Latin America, for example, if a fighter retires in his corner, the next round is often started with a 10-second ceremonial count before the fight is waved off. We record that as RTD 5, time 3:00, and not TKO 6, time 0:10.

If the fight happened in Latin America and they have that rule, then it would be understandable. But it didn't happen in Latin America and that rule was not in effect. BoxRec is supposed to record the official result of a bout, not make it up themselves. The actual result, RTD vs. TKO, seems to (it shouldn't) be debatable. But the round and time is not. There is no ceremonial count in America. Once a bell rings, the round has started. The bout was stopped in the seventh round at 0:01 (he didn't retire on his stool, he came out at the bell) That's just not open to interpretation lol a lot of people use BoxRec for a source, including armchair journalists, so when BoxRec gets it wrong that error can often be seen in the media. That's not good. Can somebody at least correct the round and time?

I''ll wait for a second editor to weigh in before I abandon using BoxRec as a valuable resource.

How you are going to record real TKO on 0:01 and 0:10 of the round? Give your idea

I'm unsure how requesting a result be changed to match the officially announced result which is also being reported in the media, is a waste of time. Especially seeing as this is the "Record queries & updates". But thanks for your input. :TU:

Boxrec uses TKO 0:01; 0:02; 0:03; 0:04; 0:05; 0:06; 0:07; 0:08; 0:09; 0:10 for such situations and real TKOs and not for between round retirements.
When the bell sounds with boxer already retired it means nothing but bad coordination between timekeeper and referee.

Hawkins did not retire between rounds. As I previously stated, the referee called "time" at the beginning of round seven for Hawkins to be inspected by the ringside doctor. On the advice of the doctor, the referee then called a halt to the contest. If BoxRec want to use their own result, so be it, but the bout was stopped at 0:01 of round seven. There's no "oh but BoxRec do it this way"...if the fight has been stopped when round seven has started then it's a seventh round stoppage.

I don't think either of you even understand the situation if I'm honest. You both keep mentioning "if somebody retires on their stool/in the corner" as your points. Completely irrelevant. There. Was. No. Corner. Retirement. Both fighters were up on their feet, ready to start the round (which then started). There was no error in communication between the timekeeper and referee. There's no ambiguity. It was the seventh round lol watch the footage and then logically explain, without making an irrelevant comparison, how the stoppage should be recorded in the previous round instead of the actual round. I'd love to hear it.

Because you've now realised Hawkins did not retire and you can't explain how the round should be recorded as the sixth round? :OhYes: Thanks for your invaluable analysis :TU:

He DID retire as per our standards because there was no action in that round. Point blank.

"As per our standards"...lol...I always thought BoxRec recorded the results of fights, not apply their own interpretations to distort what actually happened. How naive of me.

This has been enlightening. I'll be sure to check legitimate sources for similar circumstances in the future. Thanks for making me aware of potential inaccuracies. :TU:
