Holmes Nielson Question

Post by BoxBuzz »

Was the Nielson Holmes Decision Legit? I never got around to seeing the fight so I'm not implying anything with the question. Just curious since it was on home turf for Brian did he get help from the judges, or did he do it the old fashioned way by earning the W.

Its hard to figure. Nielson certainly had some seriously fixed fights. Tim Witherspoon took the worst dive Ive ever seen to... well, one of the worst. The Dickie Ryan fight was obscene. Nielson was sick as a dog, fall down deathly ill, and instead of rewarding the fight to Ryan on a TKO the ref kept giving Nielson time outs in a neutral corner to recover. Eventually he fell down and pretty muched passed out from sickness/exhaustion and tried to roll out of the ring. The most bizarre thing I have ever seen was a mass of Norwegians trying push his fat ass back into the ring when he was obviously trying like hell to leave the arena and either get to a hospital or get to a bed. They were literally shoving a deathly ill man back into the ring to fight after he should have been counted out several times. That was the fight he was supposed to tie or beat Marcianos record and you get the impression that if he had died in the ring they would have tied strings to his dead body and used him as a marionette in order to keep him standing for the final bell, just long enough to award him the fight.

It was a bit too close for comfort. Last time I scored the fight I had Holmes one point ahead, but several rounds are up to interpretation. American judgae Pete Podgorski gave it to Nielsen 116-113, so it could not have been that bad a decision. It was the neutral judge that gave it to Holmes.

I remember Holmes saying that he thought he's been drugged before this one. A pretty bizarre allegation, not sure if it was followed up at all.

Which fight do you think Witherspoon took a dive in? The Neilsen fight or the Smith fight?

Neilsen vs Ryan was a strange affair. You described it perfectly, expect it was the Danes who kept pushing the Danish Nielsen back in the ring. Neilsen was born and lives in Denmark, not Norway.
