Woods Johnson is a GO for the States
Thats an odd one, not sure Warren was hoping that the crowd would lift Woods. I was expecting it to be on the PPV on the states, the low key PPV stuff with Al Bernstein and Sean O Grady on the mics.
I hope more of the Warrior boxing promotion fighters come down. Could have a great little bill then.
Anyone of the Warrior boxing Heavyweights (Ibragimov bros, Whittikar, McCall) against the Skelton vs Williams loser would be a good one.
They also have a Middleweight called Samuel Miller, whose record is comparable to Edwin Velero's!

I'm sorry mate, but you're talking w_ank. You're the guy who tried to talk up Reggie Johnson's credentials as a light heavy by saying Tarver 'only' beat him via split decsiion. When in fact if you'd bothered to see the fight, you'd know Tarver lost maybe one round.Blue wrote:There was no knock down and even a two point round wouldn’t be enough.viciousmaussa wrote:the 1st fight was no robbery. tell me if the last round shouldn't have been a two pointer for Woods (normally is when a guy gets staggered and battered to his knees), and tell me if you think johnson was more than a round or two ahead going into the twelfth.Blue wrote:It would sorta like be Karmic retribution for what happened to Johnson in the first fight.

I think Johnson deserves the 3rd fight @ home after fighting the 1st 2 in the UK.

Johnson controlled, outworked and out hustled Woods wining 8 of the 1st 10 rounds.
Co promoter Rob Waterman’s own Seconds Out reporter and most people at ringside saw Johnson as a clear winner by at least three rounds.
Johnson was not more than 2 rds ahead vs Woods I. It was close all the way. OK, let's push it & say Glen was 3 rounds ahead. Woods staggered him badly, to the point that Glen was deliriously flailing across the ring with his arms waving about like he was struggling on a tightrope. Then Woods followed up with a short right & Johnson's knees dipped, & he went down. Ref didn't call it a KD, but it was a KD. Could have been a 2 point rd WITHOUT THE kd.
Now you rememeber I said I'll push it & say Johnson's 3 rds ahead. That was generous. If a guy is pummeled, staggered AND dropped, what's to say Woods didn't deserve a 3 point rd?
Woods didn't feel like a winner. He lost more rds that Johnson did & fought without much zest until rd 12. But he had a pretty big last round. & that fight was no robbery.
I don't know why Americans have such a problem with Johnson-Woods I. Close nip & tuck fight, Woods losing closely & then getting a big 12th rd. How many yanks try to tell us that Pac beat Marquez? You know, the fight where Manny got a 3 point rd in rd 1, lost nearly every other round, then won the twelfth. That total insult to our intelligence has been peddled by some of the highly respected writers & echoed by many (desperate?) fans, yet some of these same ppl try & say that Johnson was robbed. Total nonsense.
Johnson lost to Omar Sheika because he was dropped in a very close one. Not too much difference vs Woods I.

To be fair, I think US TV only showed highlights of the Woods fight... But yes, US fight fans in general score fights different to us. They use the punch stats far more than us, and we go for Ring generalship.
I know one US fight fan, who clearly knows his onions, but score Manny vs Marquez to Pacqioao by 3. So if you take out the first round, it was still only Marquez by one (he scored it 10-6 as you really should have technically). Plainly rediculous, IMO.
I still thought Johnson was a comfortable winner of the Woods fights, I have seen worse decision but had Woods got the verdict I would really have been ranting. I thought the rematch was somewhat closer - the early rounds were closer in the rematch.

in the first fight, i felt a lot of johnson's aggression was not so effective. he's not always the most accurate puncher and he seemed to be wasting shots, and energy. IMO both guys looked spent. This is something that is overlooked. Johnson had a great early drive, but did tire quite badly midway, and after pikcing things up was given a rd 12 battering. Woods was being lectured by Witherspoon to actually throw punches at time, but he was too tired to sustain anything. He just had no energy. But Woods did land some good single counters. Instead of giving close rds to Johnson, I had quite a few rounds even and Woods winning 3 or 4 rds.stujones wrote:To be fair, I think US TV only showed highlights of the Woods fight... Johnson lost the fight because he was slipping the majority of punches but was not countering enough to score points. He buckled Tarver's knees in the 6th with a sharp short left to the jaw & dropped him on his ass from a clubbing overhand counter left on the chin in the 9th. So who’s exaggerating now?viciousmaussa wrote:I'm sorry mate, but you're talking w_ank. I don’t have to talk up Reggie Johnson's credentials as a light heavy because his record speaks for itself. I agree Tarver won the fight, but I did not see a blowout like U & Seconds Out reporter Paul Salgado claim.
It was officially and correctly ruled a slip! Woods made the same fall from the same spot of canvas earlier in the bout. (Ruled a slip.) No way could U legitimately score that a 10-7 rd. I agreed with Tony Paolillo’s score of 116-112, so a 3 point round wouldn’t have mattered anyway.viciousmaussa wrote:Johnson was not more than 2 rds ahead vs Woods I. It was close all the way. Sorry, but I see no facts (DVD) or reason to agree with U.
From the opening bell to the 10th (With the exception of the 7th & 8th when he rested.) Johnson had Woods on the back foot nullifying his superior height and reach advantage. Glen had field day inside with body shots and clubbing over hand rights and Woods had difficulty keeping him off. Every time Clinton tried to mount an attack, Johnson would raise his work rate to match him.
Elliot Worrsell of EastSide Boxing said it all in his report; A source close to the Woods camp summed up the feelings of a few ringsiders as he muttered a passing comment “we got away with that one”.
Garbage. Tarver dominated Reggie Johnson, but for a couple of rounds and a knockdown. Woods hit Johnson with a right and Johnson went down. The ref incorrectly ruled it a slip. Believe me, I went through a bit of Glen Johnson nuthugger phase, and was gravely disappointed with him in the Woods I fight. No way he dominated that fight...I already said Woods didn't feel as though he was a winner. His stamina was poor, and his quality shots were few and far, but Johnson is given too much credit for moving forward & winging sloppy shots. Saying that Woods could have got a 10-7 round (badly wobbled him and drove him to the canvas with a punch) is no more preposterous than saying Johnson deserved it by a big margin -a balance that I already addressed in my previous post.Blue wrote:Johnson lost the fight because he was slipping the majority of punches but was not countering enough to score points. I thought it was a very clear decision. Manny won the second, and then from then on in it was Marquez all the way, I think I gave manny a share of 1 other round, but he was getting his head boxed off, and Marquez landed some big shots on him.

But if he hadn't had a big round in rd 1 vs Marquez AND if he hadn't got a big rd in rd 12 of Morales I, he could've been a very clear loser in both. I would've had him near shutout v Marquez and an 8-4 loser against Morales. & Morales gave away that 12th.

Marquez, despite nearly getting blitzed in the opener battled back marvelously in that match.
He was the moral winner in my eyes - coming back from the brink to outbox a man who could clearly hurt him, with his superior boxing skills.
Its a shame no re-match was made as their styles meshed beautifully.
Marquez, against those unwilling to engage him, can look pretty boring.

I think its pretty obvious that Fwank has chucked his money in with Johnsons people to get options with Johnson defending against Calzaghe ASAP.
There is nothing in the lt-heavy division, and Calzaghe would be considered the top guy there for the next 18mths he has left in the game, a Tarver and maybe a Woods fight and he`d be gone.
Fwank is a sharp promoter, no doubt
