Tyson-Jones exhibition cut down to eight two-minute rounds

On November 28th in Los Angeles on Triller pay-per-view, boxing legends Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., will engage in exhibition fight in which the 54 year-old Tyson and the 51 year-old Jones clash for eight two-minute rounds using twelve-ounce gloves. The WBC will likely provide some form of off-site judging for the exhibition. As part of the $50 pay-per-view, former super middleweight champion Badou Jack (22-3-3) takes on Blake McKernan (66-9) and in the chief supporting bout YouTuber Jake Paul (1-0) and takes on former NBA star Nate Robinson (pro debut). (There will be al least one additional bout). A press conference was held last Thursday.

When asked for his reaction to the fight being classified as an exhibition by the California Athletic Commission instead of it being a "real fight", Tyson snapped, "Listen, I don't know what you are talking about, what's not a real fight? You got Mike Tyson and Roy Jones. I'm coming to fight and I hope he's coming to fight. That's all you need to know."

Jones finished the thought, "Who goes in the ring with the great, legendary Mike Tyson and thinks, aw, this is just an exhibition. Twelve ounce gloves, no headgear... really, this is an exhibition? Come on bruh, be for real!"

As for the two-minute rounds, Tyson said he was disappointed with that restriction. "I'm sure they have their reasons for doing it, but you know, the women fight two minutes. But this is bigger than me, its for charity, its not all about me. The commissioner has more input than I do, so who am I to talk? I'm just happy that we're doing it."

Jones said he was preparing very hard for the fight: "Honestly, I'd have to be a fool not to [train intensely]. I'm going into the ring with one of the most dangerous men ever to grace the boxing ring. How could you go in there with twelve ounce gloves on, which is only two ounces bigger than what you normally fight in. You got on twelve ounce gloves, in with the one of the hardest punchers in boxing history, the youngest heavyweight champ of all time. And you're gonna not prepare to your utmost intensity? Are you crazy? It should be even higher than your most intense time's work because this is a bigger situation."

Isn't this news at least three weeks old?

To be honest, apart from morbid curiosity, to see what these have left, I’m losing interest in this bout.

Probably because the entire fight card is weak and the main event definitely isn’t going to be a real fight.

You’re going to see two old geezers politely sparring each other, much akin to Tyson’s four-round exhibition against Corey Sanders fourteen years ago.

It was a pretty dull affair, and neither man tried to hurt their opponent, which entirely understandable, considering it was only an EXHIBITION.

And there’s no reason to believe that the Tyson-Jones exhibition will play out any differently.

Why isn't there a "Who gives a sh1t" option. I wouldn't cross the road to watch this never mind get it on PPV.

And before anybody asks "So why bother to post on this thread if you feel like that about it?" I don't really know. I guess I'm just amazed that anyone would be interested in two has-beens going through the motions. It's not even a proper fight.

The belt for an exhibition. Maybe they should create a belt for an open workout champion?

And that BLM label on it. The corrupt WBC tries to show how politically correct it is.

WBC has became a total joke recently.

This is one of those times I’m embarrassed to admit to being a fan of the sport of boxing.

I love watching the fights, but there’s so much bṹllṡhḯṫ that happens outside the ring that really annoys me… and unfortunately for me, this is definitely one of those occasions.

I wish I was capable of enjoying other sports more than boxing.

Now that's not entirely fair, Doc - nothing 'recent' about it.

Heavyweight boxing legends Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. will not be fighting for any special WBC title when the pair collide on November 28.

Despite previous reports to the contrary, and Jones then admitting he was more motivated if there was a WBC belt on the line, the situation has been cleared up.

The World Boxing Council will pay tribute to the superstar champions and give each competitor a strap for their efforts.

No matter who wins, the pair will walk away with a ‘Front Line Battle – Black Lives Matter’ strap

Outlining their thoughts on giving Tyson and Jones the awards, the WBC said the following: “Through their wondrous careers, Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. have written with golden letters several chapters in the history books of the WBC and boxing in general.

It's not a real fight of course.
But 2 legends, getting back into physical shape, and good health. Why not.
Roy should be in much better fighting shape, but is chinny.

Cannot see the appeal here at all. There's never been a good boxing exhibition yet. Why would these two old fogies have the first. More money than sense if you stump up for this.

Tyson-Jones PPV To Double As Concert; Lil Wayne, French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, YG, DaBaby All Set

Boxers have asked hip-hop artists to chaperone them to the ring with a song and dance for decades on end, but it will reach another level during the Mike Tyson versus Roy Jones Jr. pay-per-view event Nov. 28 when the exhibition match between two all-time greats will double as a quasi-concert.

A star-studded lineup featuring DaBaby, Lil Wayne, French Montana, Wiz Khalifa and YG will each have multi-song performances during the event, entertainment platform and event host Triller announced.

Triller is backed by a long list of entertainers including Snoop Dogg, Future, The Weeknd and Pitbull, and the social app is tapping into their brand identity by bringing the musical acts to Los Angeles’ Staples Center, a longtime host of many big-time boxing matches, concerts as well as the Grammy Awards.

“The connection between boxing and music is undeniable,” said Bobby Sarnevesht, executive chairman of Triller. “As a global language, music unites cultures, and we knew this historical moment needed to include some of the biggest names in the industry. Unparalleled to any other entertainment platform in the space, Triller is determined to give fans a night they will never forget.”

"This event is going to go down in history, no doubt! I'm grateful to be a part of it and share the arena with two living legends. I'm stoked to perform and give the fans something they can rock to,”
said Lil Wayne.

“It’s truly a moment,” added French Montana. “I’m honored and can’t wait to see Tyson and Jones fight.”

Lil’ Wayne has previously walked Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the ring multiple times by way of his live musical acts, and it remains to be seen if he will make it to the stadium next week or keep a low profile after it was revealed Tuesday that the artist has been charged with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. If convicted, the entertainer faces up to 10 years in prison.

Whether it’s Jones Jr. making rap anthems, or Tyson upping his mystique to walking into the ring to Public Enemy's “Welcome to the Terrordome” — and later being name-dropped in a ream of rhymes — the connection between hip hop and boxing has been profound since the 1980s.

Author Todd D. Snyder of Hamilcar Publications will be releasing the book “Beatboxing: How Hip Hop Changed The Fight Game” chronicling the marriage between both in the fall of 2021.

The Tyson vs Jones PPV can be purchased digitally in the United States for $49.99 via TysonOnTriller.com, FITE.TV or any of the FITE’s OTT platforms on mobile devices and smart TVs.

The event will also be available in the UK via BT Sport, and will feature fights between Jake Paul vs. Nate Robinson, Badou Jack vs. Blake McKernan and Viddal Riley vs. Rashad Coulter.
