Andrew Golota best non-champion?
Andrew Golota.
Give Big Daddy Bowe brain damage two fights. Andrew win both fights. Ref can't disqualify Andrew. Andrew winning. This bullshit. Who really win???
Then Andrew beat Byrd and Ruiz Huggy Bear. Judges rip off Golota.
Grant fight Andrew win. Ref misunderstand and call fight off.
Mafia tells him to throw Lewis and Tyson fight.
Andrew could have been great.

Not even close.
He was good, and with a better head on his shoulders he could've went further, but hell no he ain't the best Heavyweight to never win a title.

Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
No, he was mentally fragile. That’s why, for example, he couldn’t beat Bowe.

Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
I'd say, definitely not Tua, Shavers, Langford or Godfrey.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:03David Tua, Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shavers, Ray Mercer, Sam Langford, George Godfrey, Harry Wills.
Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
Based on what?
Shavers has a KO 1 victory over Ken Norton. Does Golota have any win that good?
Tua has a KO 1 victory over John Ruiz, and Michael Moorer. He stopped David Izon, and Fres Oquendo.
Langford is one of the all greatest fighters, and beat several noteworthy Heavyweights in his era.
Godfrey is the one case where you might be right.
Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
Just the others you mentioned were better.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:14Based on what?

Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
How is Golota better than Shavers, Tua or Langford? What accolades does he have to his credit to make that case?DrDuke wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:18Just the others you mentioned were better.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:14Based on what?

I was talking about the others you mentioned. Golota wasn't mentioned there by you.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:19How is Golota better than Shavers, Tua or Langford? Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
He's 0-3-1 in those bouts genius.vitalyjohnson wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:26Andrew beat Byrd, Ruiz and Bowe twice. That's 4 big wins over champoons.![]()
Though I did believe he deserved the win over Ruiz.
Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
And I picked out of them those ones, who were clearly better case. I wasn't aiming to sort out the remaining ones, just definitely not them.
Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
All of 'em I mentioned save for maybe Godfrey definitely had a better case.
Tua has 2 KO wins over Former or Future Heavyweight Titleholders. He went the distance with Lennox Lewis, while Golota was wrecked in 1.
Hard to imagine Tua not beating Golota. Head to head.

Who won those fights really? Andrew get bad calls because hes from Eastern Block country.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:28He's 0-3-1 in those bouts genius.vitalyjohnson wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:26Andrew beat Byrd, Ruiz and Bowe twice. That's 4 big wins over champoons.![]()

Bowe on ground bad many times in fights. Andrew beat him up. Really won.
And he was winning vers Grant. Just needed to finish match.

So you believe Andrew should've just been allowed to low blow indefinitely without punishment?vitalyjohnson wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:32Who won those fights really? What did he land like 10 or 12 low blows over the course of them fights?
Was winning vs Grant indeed, and then he quit because he was tired.
He didn't have it in him to win when things got tough.
Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
If to compare Tua with Golota, yes, Tua's claim is better.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020, 12:32All of 'em I mentioned save for maybe Godfrey definitely had a better case.

Have to say, :Povetkin deserves a mention as best HW non-champion.
Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
I don't count belts where there is a more substantial belt available. Regular belt...LMFAO! I can't stand that, but that's a discussion for other threads.

Re: Andrew Golota best non-champion?
If Gerry Cooney had fought Mike Weaver instead he won the WBA title
Nino Valdes, Joe Baksi, Larry Gains (beat Primo Carnera and KO'd Max Schemeling...) and in the lighter weights, I could be all day naming them Howard Davis, Bernard Taylor (he was mustard) Johnny Clark, Dave Sands etc etc.
Golota was a good fighter but he would mentally give up, like when he fought Mike Tyson - didn't he get done for impersonating a police officer in the Illinois countryside?
