Gervonta Davis Reportedly Involved in Hit-and-Run Accident

According to CBS affiliate WJZ in Baltimore, WBA super featherweight & lightweight world champion Gervonta Davis was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run accident in South Baltimore overnight.

The news outlet states that the accident happened around 1:53 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Baltimore Police arrived at the scene of a multi-car accident. They found several people suffering from minor injuries, one person was taken to an area hospital.

According to police, a vehicle ran through a red light and struck another vehicle, then left the scene.

Police would not confirm to CBS WJZ if Davis was at the scene or driving the vehicle, but a source told CBS WJZ that Davis was driving the car in question that allegedly ran the red light.

Last Saturday night at the Alamodome in Texas, Davis had the biggest night of his career when he knocked out Leo Santa Cruz in the sixth round. The contest, which headlined a Showtime pay-per-view card, saw Davis land a crushing uppercut to knock Santa Cruz out cold. Video clips of the knockout went viral on the internet, garnering millions of views.

The fight was Davis' debut as a pay-per-view headliner, with sources indicating the event generated a better than expected buyrate.

Adrien Broner was once classed amongst the top-six of The RING's pound-for-pound ratings, he's engaged in ten world championship bouts, faced ten world champions and also captured world titles in four weight divisions.

People forget that Broner's resume for the first 5½ years of his career (before his 24th birthday) was truly impressive, they only seem to recall what's transpired since 2015, when his in-ring talents were declining.

And in all honesty, in my mind, there are lots of similarities between Mike Tyson and Adrien Broner, but whilst the former is respected and adored, the latter is despised and ridiculed.

Therefore, I can understand the reason why people compare Broner and Davis, since (to a certain degree) they both seem to follow the Mayweather blueprint.

And I feel that Gervonta is more likely to follow Adrien’s footsteps rather than Floyd’s.

Gervonta Davis to stand trial for alleged involvement in 2020 hit-and-run incident

Boxer Gervonta Davis will stand trial on Dec. 12 for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident, according to court records.

A Baltimore Circuit Court judge declined to approve a plea deal on Wednesday that would have avoided jail time for Davis and instead meted out 60 days of house arrest, Zy Richardson, spokesperson for the Baltimore City State Attorney's Office, confirmed to ESPN. The trial is expected to last two days.

The incident in question occurred on Nov. 5, 2020. Davis is accused of fleeing the scene of an accident that involved four people, including a pregnant woman, Jyair Smith. Davis is facing 14 charges, including failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury.

Smith testified that she was trapped in a smoking vehicle while screaming, according to The Baltimore Sun. She claimed Davis "looked me in the eyes, and he never came over to help."

Smith said her knee was seriously injured and that she's unable to play with her kids or work normally despite several physical therapy sessions. Smith is pursuing a civil case against Davis. The other three alleged victims all settled their civil cases against Davis; none of those three objected to the proposed plea deal, according to prosecutors, Richardson confirmed.

Davis was traveling in a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV in the early-morning hours of Nov. 5, 2020, when he ran a red light and struck a 2004 Toyota Solara, according to Baltimore Police. The Lamborghini became disabled after it struck a fence, per the police report, before the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Witness accounts, along with video footage, showed Davis leaving the scene in a black Chevy Camaro, according to police.

Davis, a 27-year-old native of Baltimore, is slated to return to the ring in December. Talks are ongoing for a fight with Ryan Garcia, but the competing networks each fighter is aligned with pose a major stumbling block.

A former 130-pound champion, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) now campaigns at 135 pounds. He narrowly defeated Isaac Cruz via unanimous decision in December before he scored a sixth-round TKO of Rolly Romero in May.

Davis is also facing two misdemeanor battery charges for an incident in February 2020 in which he "was observed battering his former girlfriend," according to Coral Gables (Florida) police. A hearing in that case is set for Sept. 29.

Gervonta Davis might not get away with a slap on the wrist for his alleged involvement in a 2020 hit-and-run incident. That’s according to The Baltimore Banner, who reported that a judge rejected a plea offer that would have spared Davis jail time.

The plea offer drawn up by prosecutors included a one-year suspended sentence with two months of home confinement and work release over charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and damage to property, driving on a revoked license and running a red light.

Judge Melissa Phinn rejected the offer after hearing testimony from Jyair Smith, who was injured in the incident. Smith told the court that she suffered serious injuries after Davis’ Lamborghini SUV allegedly ran a red light and hit a car she was in. Smith, who was pregnant at the time of the incident, said she looked Davis in the eyes and asked for help before he allegedly fled the scene.

“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis; I looked him in his eyes,” she said. “I said I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant. He never once came over to help me. He got his things and left.”

Smith said she sustained a serious knee injury in the crash. Three other people, who were inside the struck vehicle, were also hospitalized for their injuries.

This most recent plea offer came after Davis rejected a previous offer from prosecutors. The earlier offer stipulated that Davis would serve at least 120 days in prison on a mostly suspended one-year sentence.

In addition to criminal charges, Davis was also subject to civil cases from the victims of the crash. It is believed that Davis has reached settlements with three of those victims. Smith, who spoke in court, said Davis’ lawyers had ignored her attempts to reach a settlement.

The 27-year-old Davis is considered one of the most talented active boxers on the planet. He has held multiple titles across three weight classes (super lightweight, lightweight and super featherweight). In May he extended his pro record to 27-0 with a sixth round KO of Rolando Romero.
