WBC Create Bridgerweight

Post by Old bones Ian »

So the WBC have created Bridgerweight for boxers between 200-224lbs.
I honestly just see this as a money grab as usual, they are saying it's to protect the boxers, but what boxers want it?

I can see some sense to it, a 207lb fighter vs someone at 245lbs is a big jump (provided both are fit).
That said though the heavyweight division is so shallow in talent that splitting it further will result in two very diluted divisions. The WBC hand belt out like confetti as well.

For me the number of divisions has always been less of an issue to the sport than the number of titles available in each division. The number of belts available now must seem like a Trump like parody for anyone looking in from outside. Embarrassingly farcical

Bunch of morons.

So not only do they have to have multiple world champion belts at one weight, they are now adding more weight classes.

It will appeal as a stepping stone title/belt to help promoters sell a show.
But as with the cruiserweight division; the best will look to move up to heavyweight for the big money and prestige.
Heavyweights are getting bigger, but their numbers competing are getting smaller. Hence how we have Fury and Joshua sat at the top .. let us be honest; they both really are the best of a really bad bunch.
Hopefully Usyk will show size isn't the main deciding factor at heavyweight, and skill still is the most important.

What still baffles me is how Bellend got to be involved in this. He was just one of many mediocre cruiserweight title holders .. and one of the least talented of even those. Why didn't they involve the Holyfield/Haye/Usyk/Gomez ex-champs

Hopefully the WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO don't follow suit. It'll probably get binned off if they don't.

No ones gonna want to fight in that division anyway, the whole point of moving up to heavyweight is to avoid having to make weight and for the bigger money on offer.

People say this division is for Wilder

Wilder could easily do cruiserweight. Easily. So could any heavyweight tipping the scales at 225lbs and below.

If there's money in the division there's only a very loose handful of top level fighters who couldn't make 224lbs. Joshua, for example, could easily do 224lbs, so what's the point?

I honestly do wonder, if Wilder and Uysk didn't exist, would the WBC have bothered with this ? Their modus operandi is to create titles to fit opportunities. They've embarrassed themselves fawning over Canelo for the past few years and have created special belts for Tyson/Jones and other situations too. The WBC should be done under trade descriptions anyway, it is not a "world boxing council" it has been run by the same family for generations.

Joke. Like the 'Franchise' champion its nothing more than opportunity to get more sanctioning fees. sulaiman really does represent everything that's wrong with boxing. hopefully the other sanctioning body's don't follow suit and bbbfc and reputable states in the USA won't sanction this joke of a division.

Dreadnought weight? Juggernaut weight? Trawler weight? Truckweight?
I don't got a name that's better, but how about we just do away with the WBC entirely?
