Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
If Tom Morrison didn't play Tommy Gunn, would his career been better?

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
well it took almost a year to film that movie from what I heard
Morrison took about 6 months off of his career to do it
and he was in Hollywood Ca. "doin" i" while he was doing it of course.
BTW that part of his career was discussed in depth in the "ultimate" Tommy Morrison thread here
a while back.I will try and bump it up.

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
and don't forget about all of the publicity tours that Tommy Morrison
had to do to promote Rocky V when it was finally released in November 1990.
(after about a year when he first got involved in it)
He had said somewhere that he really hooked up with the Bimbo's at that point
when he did autograph signing engagements at card shows and stuff
also at some point in his career he became involved with drugs (cocaine and maryjuana)
but I'm not sure how far back into his pro boxing career
but you know it was all more then readily available in Hollywood then anywhere else of course)

Tommy Morrison was jinxed by Ray Mercer pounding the living f**k out of him.
Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
Not really. He rebounded his career after that and had real potential to be more successful, at least finincially.
If not his lack of dedication, he could win Bentt and face Lewis earlier, when he had more chances for a win.
If not his lifestyle, he could avoid getting H.I.V. and face Tyson, when he had more chances for a win.

Morrison had fights after the film was finished and before the Mercer match. I didn’t see a decline. He looked great in the first three rounds of the Mercer fight.
After that bout, he slipped dramatically. The Foreman win was good, but he took brutal punishment in his victory over Joe Hipp and otherwise failed against the top opposition. To me, there was a clear line and the line went right through Mercer.
I was never a Morrison fan, but I agree that there was untapped potential. I just happen to think that the Mercer fight stunted him physically and mentally.
Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
I’ve always been of the opinion he became a better fighter after Mercer, yes he took his lumps against Hipp but I think the Morrison from the Mercer fight would’ve fallen apart in the Hipp fight and certainly wouldn’t have had the ability to outbox Foreman over 12.bwu wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 11:39DrDuke wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 10:33Not really. He suffered a broken hand and a broken jaw in the Hipp fight, still he was able to pull of a victory.bwu wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 11:39DrDuke wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 10:33Not really. He rebounded his career after that and had real potential to be more successful, at least finincially.

Right, Mercer and Hipp fights became a good experience for him. Mercer fight taught him to fight in a more rational way.littlepug wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 11:46I’ve always been of the opinion he became a better fighter after Mercer, yes he took his lumps against Hipp but I think the Morrison from the Mercer fight would’ve fallen apart in the Hipp fight and certainly wouldn’t have had the ability to outbox Foreman over 12.bwu wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 11:39DrDuke wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 10:33

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
I think he was rushed into a title fight with Mercer (October 1991)too early in his career.
a lot of it was the pressure of becoming a nation-wide celebrity known as "Tommy Gunn"
from Rocky V less then a year earlier (November 1990)
and having only 7 pro fights since filming finished filming Rocky V (Febuary/March 1990)
and they wanted to capitialize on that
He went into the Mercer fight having only had 27 pro fights
with
14 first round knockouts
7 second round knockouts.
Zero third round knockouts
one fourth round knockout
one fifth round knockout
and he had never been past round 6 in his pts wins

I would have bet the Mercer fight was before rocky.i wasn't a fan, but he's a bit underrated. The Mercer fight wasn't rushed, it's called experience, you can't run over everyone.

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
I would have liked to have seen Morrison fight Francisco Damiani (who was on the verge of winning that HW belt
before Mercer won it with a freak punch).
before he fought Mercer.
did you see the fighters who Morrison fought after Rocky V was filmed and before November 1991?
not exactly a learning experience.

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
He got Knocked Out by Michael Bentt.
End of story.
He also got AIDS, likely from shooting steroids.

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
If anything it made him a bigger star than he had any real reason to be based on his actual career.
Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
More according to people surrounding him.
And roids - he admitted them even himself.
Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
Ok, so basically either PEDS or women. Just like if someone gets COVID, they don't know who gave it to them. He probably never knew either.
Thinking about it though, it likely was a woman. Would he have been dumb enough to share a needle?

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
he walked straight right into a lucky punch (as he was in the middle of punching Bent retreating against the ropes)
and he still finished on his feet.
also he had all those tattoos on him,I think most of those came after the diagnosis (but he may have had some hidden from view)
thats how Ezy E was said to have gotten it.

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
He most likely got it from unprotected sex and that's it. Cause he couldn't do drugs while he was an athlete (he surely did after the retirement). But to get HIV from injecting roids? How on earth it could happen? It sounds absolutely bizarre to roid up with some others' needles. I assume, when athletes juice up, only themselves and their team doctors know about that.

Next to impossible to catch from a woman if you can stay out of her ass or when she's on the rag. I'd bet, like you, it was a woman's booty.

But if we're wrong, how do we know he stayed out of her ass?

Re: Was Tommy Morrison jinxed by Rocky V?
what about the theory that he thought he was doing a woman,
but actually it was a man posing as a woman?
I seem to remember seeing a news report on TV were Donnie Bonaduche got into a fight on Sunset Strip or soewhere
with a hooker who he thought was a woman, but actually turned out to be a man.
