Just watched this on the IPlayer.
I remember this like it was yesterday, I was around at that time, a Bantamweight just like Jim, and boxed many of the same opponents.
Such a terrible tragedy.
Along with the sad death of Bradley Stone, this really made me realise the seriousness of the sport and that these lads paid the ultimate price.
Jim will never be forgotten.

So sad to see but nice to remember James and a subtle reminder of the risks of this sport. Things improved markedly since then fortunately. Thoughts go out to the people like his trainer, close friends and family.

Docherty had also stopped Murray in the amateurs in 1989 but Murray was streets ahead in the 12-rounder when he faded alarmingly. The sight of rival fans brawling as a fighter lay lifeless on the canvas is impossible to defend.

Heartbreaking and tough watch. As much as they BBBofC have a lot of things not great about them their medicals etc are amazing. Obviously hits home more due to Mike Towell growing up with me but never really knew much about this one.

One thing I hate is the promotors on it talking about it all, these men lace up the gloves and they disrespect , abuse and take advantage of them. FW actively bullies fighters and if they don’t do what he says he isolated and ruins them, and when they move he financially ruins them.

RIP the man, he laid the ultimate price, but how many people died doing what they loved?

Drew was one of those nearly men in many respects, good enough to win a British title at two weights but everything else eluded him. Vincenzo Belcastro gave him a 12-round hammering for the European bantamweight title in 1994 in Glasgow and Alfred Kotey later destroyed him in four rounds for the WBO bantamweight title, also in Scotland. Kotey then lost his WBO title to the canny Daniel Jiminez of Puerto Rico, and Jiminez outscored Docherty over 12 rounds in Mansfield in 1996, three months after the James Murray tragedy. Jiminez used his elbows as much as his punches in that one.
It was the same really in the amateurs, really, where Drew lost two ABA flyweight finals to the great John Lyon. The first was a massacre. Lyon pounded Docherty for three rounds in 1986 and went on to win gold in the Commonwealth Games that year in Edinburgh. (Drew was also there but he was eliminated by Canada's Steve Beaupre in the quarter-finals.) The rematch in 1988 proved a completely different story. Lyon was gunning for a record seventh ABA title to surpass Joe Steers, who won six ABA titles way back in the 1890s. However, Docherty had matured beyond belief and was clearly beating Lyon when the referee jumped in and gave Docherty a standing eight-count in the final round from a nothing right hand. That bought Lyon the majority decision and the record. The referee offered his congratulations to Lyon went Lyon over to shake his hand.
They were due to meet again a year later in the ABA semi-finals but Frank Hendrie, the head of the Scottish ABA, pulled the Scots out in a row over the use of headguards which were banned from the ABAs at that time. Docherty would have beaten Lyon that year.
