Lockett v Rhodes

Post by MightyWarrior »

Well, so far so good, and no sign of the anticipated Rhodes pull out that more than a few people have been expecting.

Seems to be the fight of the night for me, this one.

Has Rhodes got a surprise in store for the Welshman? Or is it inevitable that a serious puncher against a man whose chin & confidence must be very questionable, will end one way only?

Will be interesting to find out.

And I hope no pull out this time either.......

I'd be very surprised if Rhodes wins this one, Lockett has all the advantages here. KO win for Lockett inside of 4

Damn right!! Rhodes will be outclassed, out punched, and punched out. I got a gig that night, so I wont be able to attend, but I'm sure Mr Lockett will get on fine without me, :D

It is more likely that Lockett will win this.
However Rhodes is not the only one to know what a beating is like. At least Rhodes was koyed a couple of times and that put an end to his pain. He is guilty of a glass jaw and that dented his confidence
Lockett however endured a serious beating for the distance. I remember watching that fight and thinking he may aswell retire now, it was horrible.
In some ways I'd rather be koyed earlier than go through that.

I suspect he has just as much in the back of his mind as Rhodes does 8)

I like Ryan - he's a really nice lad. But he gets hit too often and that's not something you want to happen when your fighting Gary Lockett. I can see a stoppage for The Rocket.

Fair play to Rhodes for taking the fight though, There isn't a huge queue of people wanting to take on Lockett, for obvious reasons.

I've nothing against Lockett but I'll be rooting for Rhodes on Saturday night. I'm hoping he can roll back the years, he'll need to if he's to come out victorious.

Lockett does get marked up a lot, and Rhodes is excellent at constantly throwing leather into the opponents face, although chances are the fight will unfold like this; Rhodes looks smooth and classy and nicks the rounds UNTIL a Lockett bomb ends the fight.

I agree with Topper, this might be the fight of the night and I hope ITV do their fans justice. I was hoping for extended coverage on ITV4 in addition to the main 2 hour ITV1 broadcast but so far, there is more than enough on the undercard to warrant it and there'll be fxxk all else worth putting on in its place on ITV4 but so far it doesn't look good. My worry is that forty stones of sweaty heavyweights will eat up half of the two hour show, and then ITV will have to condense the outstanding supporting bill/undercard into about sixty minutes.

I'm on the fence on this one - I still haven't seen Lockett in a big enough test since Monaghan (apart from the rematch) to really see how much better he is since the Tsarenko days.

Rhodes' isn't the fight he once was, and who knows if he can fight a 12 rounder anymore and what is his chin like.

However, lets not forget just how easy Lockett himself is too be hit, he is definately the more sturdier in the chin department (very durable) but he can get easily outboxed, but can Rhodes keep it up for 12 rounds.

I'll be a coward and sit on the fence, on thing I will say is that if Rhodes does lose - I think he will be leading the fight on the cards for early rounds.

You'd rather be KO'd and have no confidence at all in your durability, than know you have a cracking chin and you can fight a full 12 even when it's not going your way? What a stupid thing to say!

Heart of a lion v chin of a fairy????? I know what I would rather!!!

I take it you've never boxed?

C'mon Stu, I usually agree with most of what you say, but get off the fence dude. Lockett will smash Rhodes, he's in a different league. The only reason you've not seen Lockett in any more meaningful fights is because nobody will fight him!!

Lockett KO 2. Put your house on it.

Yes, I think Ryan is going to have visions of Jason Matthews when he sees Lockett heading towards him looking to unload some of that TNT in either hand.

Early night for the Rocket Man with a picture perfect KO.

I'm not sure either would beat Scott Dann.

Seeing as everyone is picking Lockett I am gonna say that Rhodes will befuddle him with his Ingle style, bash him up a bit and win on a mid to late stoppage.

If Rhodes can hide that chin and keep out of the way of Lockett's bombs, he has a more unconventional style and could outsmart the welshman..

I wouldn't rather either of them.
Rhodes confidence was shot after his knock outs that is for sure.
Locketts' confidence was just as dented after the beating he took. Good for him that he was durable and stayed up. Fights like that can end your career though and the corner could have stopped it.

Heart of a Lion is obvious and he has that, the two boxers aren't comparable I know that.

As i said anyway, Lockett should win this.

No I haven't boxed, i take you have?

Indeed I have, but not very sucessfully, :D :D .

Gary learnt a lesson, wheras Rhodes learnt a cold hard fact. You can learn from lesson, and work on after (as Gary has), but you cannot change a fact!!

Gary does not recieve the respect he deserves, although he is doing everything right.

He suffered a tough loss (which he has revenged) for fighting in a one dimensional way, and since then he has done everything right!

He is just not being given the breaks as he is too dangerous, and he's no longer an unbeaten prospect.

Name 1 domestic Middleweight who would beat him..............??

There isn't one.

Dann.... takes too many shots..... With Locketts punching power??

Eastman.... Over the hill. Miranda is just a foriegn Lockett who got a break.

Williams.... Over the hill, couldn't handle the power. Although he would have the skills to make a TOUGH night for Lockett.

Elcock...... As if.

i'd say that rhodes has the skills and power to control this fight comfortably - but does he still have the reflexes and desire?

i think in his day rhodes would have beaten lockett every time, but he aint the fighter he was. he gets caught too much by shots he would have slipped blindfolded in his early days ... and there is, of course, also a serious question mark about his chin and how much he wants to fight.

in my opinion, though, this is still a fight that rhodes can win without too many difficulties - providing he's right. there's plenty of people out there talk about gary lockett like he's marvin hagler - when the truth is that he's decent but VERY beatable, very predictable domestic level fighter.

my humble prediction is rhodes by three or four points ... maybe staggering over the finishing line after a knockdown or two ...

Hey, I like Lockett as much as the next man. But you're going well over the top. Gary may well be a vaunted puncher, but at what level? Does he really hit harder than Dann? And you're right in pointing out that Dann gets hit. But no more than Lockett.

I really don't see Lockett-Rhodes as the clear-cut affair that some of you do. If I had to put money on it, I'd say Lockett in 8 rounds. But, deep down, I think Rhodes, even though well past his best, frustrates Lockett, busts him up, and wins a close but clear decision.

OTT I think not.

Do you honestly think Dann punches with the same ferocity that Lockett does?? There are not a great deal of common opponents (3). The only stand out difference being Hussien Osman who was chinned in 2 by Lockett, and Dann went to points.

Apart from that, are you saying Jon Penn (shit) could chin Dann where Lockett could not?

They both leak shots, but Lockett is far more resilient, and powerful. Good night Scott.

You might be right. But what has Lockett done in his career that suggests he's such a top-flight middleweight?

If he proves himself to be that, I'll be first to acclaim him as such. I have nothing against him. But he's been scuffling around as a WBU level light-middleweight. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong, and you right. I just think you're going a little bit overboard on him so far.

What was the story about the proposed Elcock vs Lockett match up?

I'm going for Lockett - As much as I have always been a fan of Rhodes, he's to fragile.

Rhodes only hope in my opinion is to either befuddle Lockett from the outside using his speed advantage or hit him very hard early on to gain his respect.

Rhodes has the ability to beat Lockett, it's all about whether he can deal with what comes back from Lockett - I don't think he will.

Rhodes was down twice and nearly out in the first round of his pro debut.

I agree Lockett is way too predictable & easy to hit to go all the way, based on some of his recent form ( unless he gets a great trainer who teaches him to be a bit more elusive ) but he'll hit way too hard for Rhodes I reckon.
He's one of those rare fighters that carries a world class punch in either hand, plus has an excellent chin too. Not often you get both those characteristics going together.

States, I don't think there is any denying Locketts punching power is impressive. At what level...?? KO'ng the tough Kevin Kelly who challenged for the WBA world title, and beat Sam Soliman. Never been dropped his entire career Kelly and Gery put him to sleep. That is world class power!! Nobody can take punches like that clean.

But that was the 'old' Gary

Which leads me into my next point. Since he suffered his defeat Gary HAS moved to a great trainer who IS teaching him to be more elusive (Brian Hughes). Gary openly states that he doesn't see himself up there with the Winky Wrights, or Jermain Taylors of the world, but domestically he knows he's the best.

The proposed Elcock battle was a bit of bastard. Injury and illness caused both fighters to pull out, then the fight just got swept under the table. I'm pretty sure the Elcock camp have been offered the fight a few times since, but they've never wanted it. Neither fighter has much to gain from the fight. Gary would prove, and gain nothing chinning Elcock.
