could you reassure me

Post by larthyph »

Would like to hear back from folks here, would you sign up your daughter for boxing? My wife and I had a huge ass fight, she wants our eldest daughter to take up boxing, but I am against it. I think this is not for girls, it is bad for women's health and not beautiful! But seing the way the things are headed now, looks like she is going to have it her way. Please lend me some peace of mind so that I do not worry my ass sick about my daughter!

Im thinking you are from the Netherlands, is that correct? Are there many boxing clubs over there that take females? There is nothing with sports for women if they feel they want to take part in something. If only for exercise. Let them does as they wish, if they dont take to it they will soon pack it in.

All martial arts teach discipline and self defense. it's good in our world to know basic self defense.

Having said that....of course it's a dangerous sport if it's at a competitive level (not merely exercise and light sparring).

As far as beauty is concerned, noses can get fixed. It all depends on how seriously she wants to take it. Ultimately, it is up to her.

I have a 46 year old Daughter who trained in Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and Wrestling. She started when she was 16. She ended up wrestling, in Scripted and Real Submission Matches, in clubs mostly, as well as in private sessions. She recently retired from all wrestling. I can't speak to Professional Boxing, but my daughter sure did well in her sport. Only minor injuries after decades of participating. Good trainers and training is a must. I can say that much.

There's nothing wrong with anybody. Man, Woman or Child learning the art of Self Defense. A necessary skill in life.

While I'm not a fan of Women's Sports in general, I wouldn't deny any Woman the opportunity to participate in them if it makes them happy.

Anybody learning to fight is learning a useful skill in life. You never know when you'll need it, but when it's needed you're glad to have those skills

Learning self defense and participating in competitive combat sports are not the same thing.
The former can be done without the latter.
It seems like you need to do more research on this, talk to the clubs and instructors.
I get the impression that you're ok with training but have concerns about fighting.
Like others on this thread I would never discourage teaching kids self defense.
Learning self defense doesn't mean she has to travel the country fighting though.

I‘m assuming your daughter wants to do it as well. I understand your concerns but from my experience it’s really not that bad as a novice. Maybe go along with it and see if she likes it. She can also learn to box without having fights.
