This one.
I think this is a newer thing, like in the last 20 years, before that I never saw it.
I was going to say that, a recent development - now amateur rugby league! :oo

In pro boxing, PEDs are widely spread at least 40 years IMO, just look at Hagler or Tyson, those guys were roided AF. But in last two decades PEDS became more common among lower levels of sport, lot of guys in my gym using PEDs too.

The top heavyweights might have been but there was nothing when I was around - albeit nearly 30 years ago :oo . In the amateur game nobody had the money to justify the outlay - the likes of Bruno? Who knows...

Bruno definitely changed physique/size mid career. 230 to 250

Tyson post prison had completely different physique although his weight wasn’t much different

Shannon went from 205 to 270 or so during his career

Haye was an 81kg amateur aged 18.

Whether the above was PEDs or just a change in each fighters attitude as to what weight was optimal I don’t know .

The sports science for bodybuilding is pretty well worked out these days. Anyone who spends a bit of time on YouTube can pretty quickly become something of an expert. I think any sport with obvious levels and not particularly good testing systems are open to abuse. If taking illegal drugs will add 20% to performance of course boxers will go for it. You only have to look at some of the heavies floating around to be very sceptical that they’ve achieved their size as natural bodybuilders.

Tommy Fury looks like a PED user. It must run in the family.

I agree with Coco. I think it's a more recent thing in boxing. People can't help but talk & also display signs they're on steroids and I never came across it with any boxers I was in contact with.

At weight lifting gyms etc(in London) it was rife even in the 90's and was ridiculously easy to get hold of.

I hate to say it and I know it’s sacrilege, but I’ve always been slightly suspicious about Benn in the G-man fight. It didn’t help that he came to the ring escorted by the Essex boys, notorious drug dealers and bang on the steroids

He trained on a tiny island (people say AJ gets tipped off when the testers arrive in Dubai, if that’s possible I’d suggest lanzarote or wherever it was would be piss easy.) Was best mates with steroid freak drug dealers. Didn’t take a drugs test after the McClellan fight (according to ITV documentary.) Hes someone I’m very suspicious of, and his son too.

You hear rumblings about the Ingle gym being good for ‘the naughty stuff’ as well.

Could it be that Christie and Lewis were achieving that clean but without the PEDS Johnson would have been miles behind.

By the way, the MMA guy I mentioned earlier also said that years later he now has all sorts of health issues because of the steroids.
I’m pretty sure Christie and Lewis were both known to be on PEDs too.
Only 2 athletes in the 100 metre final of 1988 had not served a suspension either pre or post 1988 - Calvin Smith - fourth in the race proper (including Johnson) and Robson Da Silva - 6 in the race proper.

Tyson's weight fluctuated a great deal post prison - it was very strange as he never looked "out of shape" - he certainly trained differently post Rooney and you could see more muscle mass even in his fights with Ruddock - he was obviously taking all kinds of drugs, so doubt we can rule out PED also.

I would imagine its quite rife in boxing now as its seems to be as much looking the part for their social media platforms as it is for boxing these days.

I boxed ama and pro best part of 20 years, i can honestly hand on heart say i dont know of any boxers who juice or use peds.

....i think any trainer trying to tell any young fighter to take anything would be shunned by most other boxing people - that is just my personal opinion tho

Think it's more rife in the last 20 years than before.....would go further and say it's just accepted as a given now. Which of course is shamefully wrong.

might not like it maggie or accept it from dudes sticking needles up their arse, but the PED abuse from top level downwards has been happening and generally accepted for a few decades now, across most sports. dont gotta accept it.

we not talking about steroid abuse to look good... that was happening as far back as the 80s when old/younger chaps started it all sweeping the nite club floors with snatch. nowadays it is just a normal part of that social scene.

Don't know so much about that , i had my own gym for years , still mess around with training , I can truthfully say , i have never known anyone in my gym to use them , personaly i know bugger all about them , I would'nt put up with anyone using them ,, the only ones i knew who did , there were two of them .

Funny really that both these fellas had similar temprements , both came to the gym at the age of around 11-12 ,, both shown a natural ability for the sport , both done reasonably well in the juniours , and both gave it away when they reached seniour level , both were kids who you had to baby them mentaly , unlike the others in the gym , both these lads would want to know who there boxing , what there like , how many fights did they have at school , ect , and both these kids were ferocious in the ring , UNTIL they could'nt hurt the other guy , then both would actually sit on the stool and say , he hits to hard throw the towel in , both would respond to a telling off , and both if they fought someone decent would act like they had won a world title if they got beat ,

Both after a couple of years lay off , came back to the gym , both had bodys like Arnold , and i told both both of them to leave NO STROIDS allowed in my gym , Both asked why did i say there on steroids , and both got the same answer , which was theres only two ways to get a body like yours , hard work or steroids , and your both too lazy to do the hard workd , so bugger off ,

Both actually went to other gyms and ending up boxing my lads , and we never lost to them , beccause , i only had to tell my other lads , don't matter what , hit them fast and hit them hard and they will turn there backs and give up , and both did .

Course its not always the case , i suppose quite a lot are tough and good , and probably feel they need to do it to get to the next level , and too be honest my boxers never reached the elite level , Aussie rep in ameteurs , and perhaps commonwealth level in the pro's , but never really elite ...... If your in the Elite level , and feel your disadvantaged if you don't do it , well who am i to say right or wrong , its buisness and moneys involved and you may fell you want an even playing feild ,,,,, But guys who take them at the lower levels , well to me there just cowardly foookers who do it to try and get a win hey don't deserve and want an advantage cos there scared , just like the two i mentioned

I do not agree with the view the use of PEDs is as widespread as some think ... I do not have any evidence of this view it is just a personal opinion and a gut feeling of having been in boxing for 20 years.

I do however, run with the view whilst PEDs in boxing is not as widespread as some think ... but I do agree there is clearly a small minority who have got away with cheating.

1986 was a watershed moment for steroids in the USA. I haven't got time to write a long post right now but it was in '86 that the US government stepped in and it became difficult to get high quality steroids, discreetly at affordable prices. Before then doctors would supply high grade stuff for little money. Even today you can't get quality steroids like you could then in the states. It changed everything and is one of the reasons bodybuilders started experimenting more with HGH.

From the mid 70s to '86 it was a free fire all. Look at the mass on a lot of WWF wrestlers then and in other American sports.
