Eddie Hearn
Re: Eddie Hearn
I think he was great at the start. A breath of fresh air after the Warren domination era. He made some good fights and gave the old "let's end shit fights in leisure centres" spiel. However, I think over the years he's become obsessed with the big money pathways at the detriment of the overall product.
Not begrudging anyone making a pound but his quest for personal wealth and self promotion has taken over, which led to the folly of trying to conquer America in the same way he won over the UK fans as a cheeky chancer with a twinkle in his eye. DAZN shelled him out ridiculous money at the start (as in his personal pay, not even to make the fights) and Sky and the UK side started to suffer.
He began trying to juggle too many balls in the air at once. DAZN brought in Skipper to steady the ship when they saw Eddie was clearly struggling to make an impact Stateside.

At the end of the day he's done well but it was all expected
really? was it expected, when Eddie took over, that someone would finally drag british boxing promtion into the 21st century? when he took over did people say 'in two years time there will be 160k people turn up to see a Froch fight and a Joshua fight at Wembley?' boxing finally getting casuals involved via twitter? all this was 'expected'? bollocks.
if it was expected, again, how come Francis Warren didn't do it years before Eddie came on the scene, if it was all that easy?
He's not some self made guy
I agree, though, that his constant references to himself as a 'hustler' and 'grafter', can be somewhat grating, but what do you expect? he's trying to sell his book as well, isn't he, 'Get Rich with Eddie Hearn', 'My Story, grafting your way to the top' or whatever it's callede? he's hardly going to say 'well I worked pretty hard but of course I got a leg up for which I'm eternally grateful and I'd be on my arse otherwise'?
He is how own brand now, he's selling himself as well as everything else, so take the 'hustler' bits with a pinch of salt.
You make good points . I can't deny he's done well. I just think that it was made much easier because of inheriting the Matchroom company which was worth millions. When he pitched something to Sky, they were going to listen and give it a chance etc. He's pushed the barrier and done good things but I think anyone here would have done the same if not more in his position.
Francis Warren doesn't seem to give a toss. He was walking around obese for quite a long time until he lost weight. I think that shows a bit of laziness. It's not like he's working in a 9-5 and under pressure to provide for a family. He had no excuse to be carrying that amount of weight. I also think his dad being in the picture makes it harder for him to come through. His dad is the main man there whereas Barry stepped aside. One thing about Frank that we can't deny is that he is one of the most driven promotors in the UK. He's taken a bullet and kept going. Took a hiding from Tyson apparently and kept going. Wazza is a legit gangster type. I don't think Francis has that drive in him.
If you genuinely believe that then you’re deluded. To do what he’s done you need strong financial and business acumen, a really strong work ethic and be able to sell with the best of them. Just because you come from money doesn’t grant you with those attributes.
I’ve worked with or known at least 10 people off the top of my head that have come from millionaire families and it’s clear that they won’t follow suit.

Frank seems to speak more highly of George. Francis is too busy in Poland.

Yeah that’s also what I was getting at, and I agree, I’ve known a few rich men’s sons without half the drive of their dads, or anything like it. In fact I’d say the likes of Eddie, still hungry despite the silver spoon, are the exception. Not the rule. I had to have a little chuckle at that myself , funny how people see things differently .
Re: Eddie Hearn
Ridiculously hard worker, not sure I would really like his job and the hours he puts in to it. Pre covid he was all over the place..... it will be interesting how DAZN UK pans out.

A very hard worker , has a great product and can sell himself well. But also has the financial backing , daddy’s connections and his dad as a mentor.
I’ve often found that kids who’s parents ran successful business les were much cockier.

Re: Eddie Hearn
It will be interesting how it pans out when Daddy gets older - Eddie has been dropping hints that he will get more involved in the other sports - Snooker / Darts etc - so it will be interesting to see what happens to the boxing product then. He's dropped hints that Frank Smith will have more of a hold, but he's not as good a seller as Eddie, not as charismatic when being interviewed. Eddie is really becoming the face of British boxing, even ahead of AJ and Fury - whether you think that is a good thing or not.high tower 1 wrote: ↑24 Nov 2020, 17:49 A very hard worker , has a great product and can sell himself well. Re: Eddie Hearn
Yeah - Barry will stepping back in the next 12 months. Darts and Snooker don’t quite need the same level of effort from the promoter pushing them as boxing does and I’m sure they’ve already got some good people in those sports’ senior teams. Eddie may just get involved getting some deals done with networks. Promoting boxing is far time consuming and whilst Frank Smith can deal with the logistics of the show he’s still along way off Eddie in the salesman stakes.stujones wrote: ↑24 Nov 2020, 17:52It will be interesting how it pans out when Daddy gets older - Eddie has been dropping hints that he will get more involved in the other sports - Snooker / Darts etc - so it will be interesting to see what happens to the boxing product then. Re: Eddie Hearn
self promotion is actually really important to success, for an individual and businness, it's not just an ego thing
getting yourself and your work known and talked about is good for business

Is a snake and is so full of himself its cringey. As someone said earlier if he spent as much time promoting ALL his fighters as he does himself they would be recognised world wide. Dont like the fella, hes as slimey as slimer from the ghost busters

Re: Eddie Hearn
Had a long spell where he was doing seemingly nothing but good for the sport. Some decent PPV’s and some good Sky fight nights, he had made stars out of guys like Bellew, Crolla, etc.
The decline is definitely there, and it isnt because of covid, though it’s something that has and will be used as an excuse. It’s simply greed.
We used to get some decent world title fights without having to pay PPV. Instead we had to pay for two heavyweight “contenders” to slug it out not once, but twice. Every fight with a name has the possibility of PPV now, Loma, Usyk, Josh Taylor. It’s crazy.
It’s not all his fault no doubt, but you take the good and the bad when you’re the man. You’ve gotta respect how he conducts business.

Re: Eddie Hearn
i dont think he takes away from his fighters at all, by building his own profile he has more of a following and platform to promote them. there are lots of hearn fans who will just watch or buy what he tells them
obviously the bias from him/sky can be grating, but that's his job as a promoter, don't hate him hate da game

From Essex too.
Re: Eddie Hearn
Dont think theres any doubt about it , He is a tremendously hard worker , jetting around the world , town to town city to city , pushing pushing and pushing the barrow guy probably walks around sleep depraved most of his day .
However
Question is why
he could afford not too . so who does he do it for , personaly i think he does it to prove something to his dad , I look at Hearn and see a kid who is constantly looking to daddy for a pat on the head and a well done son.
Then add in the fact i think he's a natural bully , who wants to hang with the tough guys and its easy to see why he picked boxing over darts or snooker . And also like to class the working class boxers has his mates
Also add in the fact that the natural bully who wants to impress daddy , also has a big comglomarate behind him with dad to give advice , and a super duper ego who wants and craves attention he did'nt get from daddy , and all in all you have a very complex character ,
But whatever , what you do have is a tremendously hard worker . who if push came to shove , will sod of his working class boxer mates , throw em all in the bin and go hang out with actors , and tv people , making regualr spots on Graham Norton show

I think he does it because he loves it. Part of that is because he loves the drama and profile it brings, he is definitely vain - but deep down he loves it. His dad did too.Coco wrote: ↑17 Oct 2025, 12:32Obviously hasn't happened by accident.coneye wrote: ↑17 Oct 2025, 04:56 Dont think theres any doubt about it , He is a tremendously hard worker , jetting around the world , town to town city to city , pushing pushing and pushing the barrow guy probably walks around sleep depraved most of his day .

I actually quite enjoyed the matchroom series on Netflix.
