non-bad prospect losses

Post by margaret thatcher »

anyone got examples of a hyped prospect getting that first L that didn't have lots of ppl saying that was it for them?

like, one generally considered a ''good' or respectable loss?

This was a good forum for decent boxing conversation once.

The B and I forum on Boxrec used to be known as 'The College of Knowledge' on Doghouse B and I - we bottled a quiz against Boxrec that was going to be arranged by Frank Maloney because they would have trounced us :yay:

I doubt the Boxrec B and I forum would beat Mumsnet these days.

The return of Spud might save it, lets hope so.

If you look at his record Lee Selbys earlyish defeat seemed to have no barring on how fast his career moved.

It seems if you take an L to a decent journeyman before you get to title level but that’s it, it’s not as damaging as losing at title level as an undefeated hyped guy on tv.

I’d say Jamie Moore against Scott Dixon. Learnt more from that fight than any other fight combined and still had his moments.

I think people seemed quite forgiving of Anthony Yarde against Kovalev. He emptied the tank and almost got Kovalev out of there... until he didn’t.

I know he's not yet done much but Hinata Maruta vs Hidenori Oake was generally considered a "good loss"

Lomachenko vs Salido mate? - if you count a 1-0 Lomachenko as a prospect

Three recent British ones
John Ryder vs Billy Joe Saunders
James DeGale vs George Groves
Whyte vs Joshua

Even Price vs Thomson I maybe?

Estrada vs Roman Gonzalez (I guess Estrada was a contender tbf)

Matt Macklin Vs Jamie Moore

I mean it was obviously a physically damaging fight for Macklin (so a bad loss in that sense), but I don't think people were saying he got exposed.

Not sure I’d go with Price vs Thompson. Price lost a hell of a lot confidence after that fight and was never the same again afterwards.

Dare I say Khan.

Going back a few years Cornelius Carr, Glenn Catley, Neville Brown, Chris Pyatt all suffered losses in mid prospect status.

IMO the first loss didn't have people writing him off after the result, we later learned the damage it did and the rematch completely derailed him. Most still fancied him in the rematch iirc and thought the first was a fluke, rather than exposing...

Though I'll admit my memory does suck

Price against Thompson was a weird one, just because the shot that stopped him was so crap, I can see why people may have thought it was just a complete fluke that it totally discombobulated him.

Of course, with hindsight we know that Price is just incredibly chinny, and that should really have been obvious given the evidence from the amateurs.

Yep - it’s amazing how he came back after being so comprehensively beat by Carl. Always thought he was a very underrated fighter.

What about Hagler's losses before he got the belt. Can't recall what was said about them, but of course he eventually avenged them all.

Michael Watson losing his 8th fight to James Cook, a good learning loss. No one would have predicted Cooks late career titles run at that time he was 9-5

First one that came to mind was Burns and his 2 early losses. Most would have written him off there as just a half decent British level fighter, but he went on some journey after that!

Yeah Prices losses to Thompson were probably the WORST prospect losses! He was never the same after those fights.
