This sparring spectacle was also a PPV event in the UK, but the buy-rates for that territory haven't been disclosed yet.
Thoughts?
Apparently, Jake Paul got a split too..
Oh, it isn't "hating" at all. Events like that one barely even require actual boxing. They bring the sport a step closer to being a WWE style entertainment spectacle rather than a sport.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑02 Dec 2020, 07:07 It’s a bit of a double-edged sword in my mind.
One could easily argue that circus/novelty spectacles help gain exposure from the mainstream media and casuals.
But there’s no evidence that this promotes the sport itself because the same people that watch these extravaganzas rarely view genuinely competitive marquee bouts.
I also feel the success of these novelty shows will be short-lived. They’re just a fad.
And finally, as we witnessed with the disgraceful Nate Robinson knockout, boxing is a dangerous sport.
I’d hate to see the competitors (i.e. novice celebrities or elderly Hall-of-Famers) suffer any serious injuries.
I don’t want to sound like a glass-half-empty type of guy, in other words, a “hater”, because I want the sport to succeed, which requires sizable viewing figures, but it’s just that I have my doubts as to whether these novelty events will ultimately benefit boxing in the long-term.
Put it this way, a lot of mainstream casuals tuned into the May-Mac mismatch, which attracted 4.3m PPV buys, but the same casuals that watched this novelty spectacle, actively refrained from following the sport immediately afterwards.
Think about it like a Venn diagram, where there’s only a tiny overlap between mainstream casuals (that are enticed to watch famously controversial Hall-of-Famers or celebrities) and boxing’s genuinely hardcore fan fraternity.

That's turrible. I mean they didn't have a Paul brother dropping bombs on their cards, but still....margaret thatcher wrote: ↑02 Dec 2020, 23:54more than their 2 fights combined lolOnetimeonly wrote: ↑02 Dec 2020, 20:18 Incredible number.
