Staying Up
Staying Up
Maybe this has been done before, let me know if it’s a rubbish thread.
Loads of people on this forum seem to use their own likelihood of staying up past midnight to watch a fight as the definitive barometer of how good that fight actually is, providing it’s in The States, of course.
I’m aware I’ll sound like a dickhead saying this, but I’m likely to be awake at 4AM on any given Saturday night anyway. I’m sure age and responsibilities pay a big role in this, too.
I remember a recent card was on early morning in USA, probably the Khabib card. The US fans were whinging on Twitter about having to stay up and a lot of UK fans found it funny.
Our friends Down Under have it all the best: midweek Aussie fights, early Sunday UK cards and Sunday arvo US cards.
Do you, like me, stay up for all the cards?
Do you always watch it back on the Sunday?
Did you used to, but don’t no more?
Does one late night mess you up that badly all week?

Re: Staying Up
Used to stop up for all of them but I teach fitness classes every morning these days plus I don’t really drink anymore plus I no longer subscribe to any sports channels or buy PPVs so it’s a no from me! Still love boxing and I do miss live fight nights (occasionally get some on free tv)but had to make some changes/sacrifices to make sure the plans I’ve got for the future come to fruition.
Re: Staying Up
I stay up for fights. Almost no coverage now of US cards though, so mainly UFC this weather.
Re: Staying Up
I used to stay up. Now I merely try to stay up.

Re: Staying Up
I’ll stay up for the really big fights but I’m more likely to catch the rerun these days. They do seem to get later and later though, I think it was Canelo v Kovalev that didn’t start til quarter to six because they didn’t want to clash with a UFC fight and on a couple of occasions the main event was delayed so as to allow a college football game to finish - that kind of thing just didn’t happen years ago.
Re: Staying Up
If theres a UK card, then a US card I'll usually have a nap inbetween then wake up and crack another tinny.
Re: Staying Up
These days I’m more like to get up early for a Vegas fight if it starts after 5am.
Re: Staying Up
I'm more likely to go to bed early and then get up around 2 or 3 for those big American fights, the days of staying up all night are long gone.
Re: Staying Up
I’ll usually only stay up or wake up early to watch a US card live if the fight is massive or if it’s someone from Ireland or NI on a world title tilt.
For example, the last US fight I watched live was Wilder-Fury II. Before that I think it was Farmer-Tennyson.
Other than that, I’m happy enough to watch it first thing the next day with a bacon sandwich and a cup of coffee, haha.

Re: Staying Up
I get up at 4am to start work so staying up all night to watch a card would throw me out. I could do it but won't. I usually go to bed at 9pm or so. I'd stop up to 11pm to watch a really good fight but no later. Obviously if a fight in the States has a ring walk time of 4am or later it works well for my normal routine and I will just get up and watch.

Re: Staying Up
Spence v garcia is worth staying up for, wish ITV or C5 had picked it up.
Re: Staying Up
When satellite tv first came about in the UK I was up at any hour of the night, most nights taping fights. boxing of sat channels was free then and we would get many channels from Germany and other Euro countries so boxing was always on. ScreenSport, EuroSport was free and boxing was never off. My mrs was never surprised when I put the alarm on for 3am, 4am etc.

Re: Staying Up
If it’s a decent card, then I’ll watch the whole card. Last time I did this was Wilder-Fury 1..
Watched all 4 fights.
Most times I just put my alarm on around 3am or sometimes 4am if it’s Vegas/LA.. and just go downstairs.
I’ll always check first what fight is on and what round, then go down just before the ring walks.

Re: Staying Up
Last one was wilder fury II and I set an alarm , which made it moderately tolerable. Staying up is no longer possible, I inevitably regret it after some shit fight leaves me in existential malaise. No more Vegas fights watched in casinos .

Re: Staying Up
I used to stay up for all the Tyson fights, i
remember a long night waiting up with a friend who was convinced Spinks was going to win, I think it was on ITV, and his shock when it was over inside 90 seconds. Then staying up for the Naz fights, usually with an enthusiastic group of mates over - then me being the only person still awake at 4am for first bell, everyone else snoring away in armchairs.
I even stayed up for Larry Holmes Gerry Clooney, as big as it gets and involved going to the Hammersmith Odeon at midnight
Not any more, I’ve not got the stamina for the US shows and don’t like a 4am alarm call, I’m quite happy to record and watch the replay as live, turning my phone off to avoid the result, with the massive advantage of being able to skip dull undercard fights.
I’ll watch Yarde this w’end and record Spence Garcia on Prem then watch Sunday afternoon as live ..

Re: Staying Up
Same! That's the solution. I wish I'd thought of it when I was younger. Classics like Bowe-Holyfield 1 would have been even better if I hadn't been so tired at the time.
Re: Staying Up
4 am is just too late !
If there is a live Uk fight at say 10 .30 pm plus the hours time difference and a bit of commentating afterward that does me nicely .
I am happy to catch up in the morning but frankly a lot of these us fights are not worth staying awake all night for anyway.
Take Crawford v Brook , there was nothing to suggest anything but a Crawford win .

Re: Staying Up
I used to watch all the US fights for the last 5 or more years. But I was working nights doing the doors so I'd either catch the fights at work or when I finished and got home. This past 5 months I've been working in a factory and don't work the weekends so come 5am Sunday morning I'm fighting the sleep to watch the main events
Re: Staying Up
Not any more unless it's fury in which case i'll set my alarm.
The problem i've got as a man in my late 30's is that i no longer take cocaine......which is great if you plan on watching the boxing til 6 am....not so good for your health, wealth and if you plan on not getting kicked out of your house by the missus.

Re: Staying Up
the last one i tried was Fury - Wilder 2, I tried the 'go to bed, set alarm, get up at 5' method.
I actually scoffed at my mate Jonny, who I went round to see that Saturday lunchtime, at which point he hadn't been to bed at all after a friday night skinful of narcotics, and his 'master plan' which I scoffed at, Saturday 2pm, was to bang a load of sedatives right then, sleep till 10pm-midnight, and be up bright and breezy. Idiocy, I scoffed, stupid plan, never work. Me, I'll be sensible, have a moderate glass of wine, bed at 11, and I'll be up at 5 cheering on the Big Man.
yeah......
so I just managed to drag myself out of bed because Jonny texted me, and got downstairs in time to hear the fight had been stopped. FFS.
