Juan Ramon Cruz-Gino Perez Troy Darrell-Pedro Estrada

Post by f read »

These are two classics. They are boxers that are not all time greats or hall of fame worthy. However they are great matchups and styles that really compliment the opponent. Sadly Cruz-Perez ended in tragedy. Both these took place in the Felt Forum and are a good argument for hall of fame fights category in the Boxing Hall of Fame.

That was tragic. Perez didn't die right away did he? That was the 80's. I remember the papers reporting it as another death during a string of them.

And only a year or two earlier, an opponent of Perez had also died in he ring. Fred Bowman IIRC, probably in Atlantic City.

I saw this fight live on MSG with my grandpa. Grandpa was fond of "Panadero" ("Bread maker") Cruz but sadly, his promise was not fulfilled after this tragic event. RIP Gino and Fred Bowman as well.

Yes Fred Bowman was an amateur rival of Ray Mancini. It was tragic and yes the Perez-Bowman fight was in Atlantic City. In the 1980s-1990s Atlantic City NJ was the boxing capital of the East Coast it passed Madison Square Garden of the 1970s and before.
