I'm guessing Mcrory must be skint, he's been advertising double glazing of late so that has to be a come down from working at Sky.

He was selling his Lonsdale belt on Twitter about two years ago.

No-one wanted to see this fight 30 years ago; why do they think we want to see an exhibition of it now?

I know Evander was actually first out of the traps with his intention to return to fight exhibitions, but he had his thunder stolen by Tyson who attracted more attention and has since fought.

Surely he'd be better off going in with Tyson following the success of his exhibition bout?

Guess this is to build interest.

Not sure many people will know who Glenn McCrory is, so it's an odd choice.

Terrible heavyweight, but give him due for winning a world title at cruiser. Didn't particular beat anyone and to win it but we have seen worse in title fights. Was obvious that when he faced a decent pro his reign would end.

Was never really a fan of him as he didn't float my boat, but again got to salute him for winning a world title

should never have been in the same ring with lennox Lewis .
Who was then?
Well he was beaten by both westgarth and garside .

I see what you are saying, (Garside beat him on a cut), but McCrory was a world champ which exceeds Garside’ and Westgarths achievements for me. I would make Glen top dog in the NE at that time

That’s sad. He bled for that belt. Must be hard for guys to give up their Lonsdale. If I was ridiculously loaded, I’d buy their belt & give him a lifetime lease on it. Give the guy a payday someone, he’s clearly struggling.

Wouldn’t have been a world champion had Holyfield moved up,?

He wouldnt have won the title if he had faced any named opponents. Not sure what Lumumba's ranking was but did come off a win over Jeff Lampkin. Lampkins record is nothing special he fought loads of novices in his patchy record. Lampkin found a bit of form around 1988 prior to meeting McCrory. He only defended once again Makathini then was stripped , not sure why he was stripped then proceeded to fight novices again. Hide and Golota both gave him a lesson.

Lampkin was a decorated amateur.

The IBF jobbed him around.

Who did he skillfully beat in his career as a pro? The only name on his record was McCrory. He never fought above that level and win???

AAU champ, beat world champs Alfonzo Ratliff, Prince Charles Williams and Glenn McCrory, also beat Siza Makathini, boxed well against good names at light heavy and cruiser. Judging him by his heavyweight forays when washed up is like judging Qawi on the Foreman fight, or Carlos De Leon by his performance vs Corrie Sanders.

Big Dave told me the promoter’s had Lumumba on the drink all week. Nightclubs n brass and he was flat out. Watched the fight for the first time earlier this year (it’s now on YouTube). Not a bad fight.

Holyfield vs McCrory being advertised as "Legends Return" is a lot generous to McCrory.

More like A Legend returns, and look...it's a decent British fighter some of you may remember.

How much are the older(pre 1999) Lonsdale Belts worth?

Depends on whose belt it is to an extent. Randy Turpin's sold for 23 grand in 2000 which would be about 40k now adjusted for inflation. Henry Cooper's closer to 50 grand. I'd say any of those older belts are worth north of 20.

I remember watching Glenn beat the crafty and dangerous Lumumba for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title in Stanley in 1989. It was a stinking hot summer. Jesus! Every day was almost unbearable in London and the amount of fight action was just as intense. In the month of May 1989 we saw Watson-Benn, McDonnell-McGuigan, McCallum-Graham (with Eddie Futch in Mike's corner), Carlos De Leon stopping Sammy Reeson, Pat Barrett flattening Tony Willis for the British title (a first for his trainer Brian Hughes), Najib Daho winning a war with Pat Doherty for the Commonwealth title, the death of Esteban De Jesus, Steve Cruz showing he wasn't finished against Tracy Patterson, Floyd's adopted son, Chris Pyatt, bruised and battered, stopping Argentina's Daniel Dominguez in the very last round, Julio Cesar Chavez surviving meaty right hands from Roger Mayweather to force a stoppage, John Lyon making it eight ABA titles, Henry Wharton slung out on the same night, which nearly triggered a Wembley riot - all in the space of 31 days.
Then came June and a thrilling draw between Leonard and Hearns in their rematch, Dave McAuley pounding the previously unbeaten Duke McKenzie in a huge upset, Jeff Harding walking through hell to stop our own Dennis Andries in another huge upset, Gary Mason's horrible knockout of Jess Harding, the pro debut of one Lennox Lewis, Keith Wallace maintaining an unlikely comeback against Marvin Stone...
McCrory showed real grit and determination to outscore Lumumba in the same month, really hurting the Kenyan in the first and going for it round after round until the decision was his. He then featured in one of the greatest world title fights ever seen in this country against South Africa's stocky and rugged Siza Makathini in Middlesbrough in October 1989, surviving a brutal beating for five rounds, particularly to the body, but hanging in there and rallying brilliantly from the sixth as Makathini began to fade. Gutsy Glenn finally finished his man in the 11th and proved he was all fighter and a true world champion. Sadly, he lost his title a few months later to the unheralded but solid and dangerous Jeff Lampkin, who had Gerry Cooney's trainer in his corner (Victor Valle). Lampkin waited for McCrory to load up with the right and dug in a beautiful left hook to the liver and Glenn folded, although Lampkin's task was made easier by McCrory's now desperate struggle to make cruiserweight and the ex-champ was back at heavyweight when he returned a year later.

P.S. I seem to recall that Glen sold his IBF belt because he never actually won a Lonsdale Belt outright.

Wharton had a Lonsdale belt at his book signing, everyone posing for pictures in it.
I said “how’ve you got that, you didn’t defend it?” I got back “shut up, Mickey, I borrowed it from Billy Hardy”.
