Re: Marvis Frazier
Alfonzo Ratliff? Joe Thomas? Woody Clark?
Re: Marvis Frazier
Do you have the results and other specifics about those fights?
Re: Marvis Frazier
Marvis and I stared out as amateurs around the same time at Fraziers gym. I was at his fight in the Blue Horizon when he beat David Bey. That was a great fight. I remember him knocking Bey's mouthpiece out with a Frazier left hook. Marvis was being trained by George Benton who did a great job with Marvis. A couple of years later Joe got greedy and jacked up all of the fees for fighters and trainers at the gym. As a result a bunch of people left. Benton left and opened his own gym. Fraziers gym was never the same. Joe took over training Marvis and he changed his style to fight like him but Marvis had a different body type and it was not a good fit for Marvis. We all saw what happened to him against Holmes and Tyson.Bob wrote: ↑07 Mar 2019, 15:19 Marvis Frazier

Re: Marvis Frazier
I had the good fortune on June 9, 1979 to attend the fight show at The Wheeling Civic Center... Smokin Joe was on hand it was great evening and I will always recall the moment Marvis entered the ring. A memory can play tricks on fellow but I believe the boxers in the Frazier stable wore bring yellow trunks with back trim....
I sat in the south east section of the venue in the elevated seats about eye level to the ring Ray Mancini talks about the smell of the popcorn at The Struthers filed house on Golden Glove Championship night ..It's that same kind of memory
I returned to this same auditorium 9 or 10 months later fulfilled my lifelong dream climbing the steps to the alter of the religion as a boxing second after filling the ice bucket, cutting the tape and assisting with applying the gauze gloving the boxer up.
The smell of the POP CORN yes that’s it I never forget that Night June night !

Re: Marvis Frazier
Marvis was a much better amateur than pro in my opinion. He was a small heavyweight and fought the Joe style which was not for him. He did not have the same fire and strength of his legendary father. Larry Holmes was not known for stopping anyone early and Tyson of course was on the ladder up at the time.
Re: Marvis Frazier
JMac: could you share some memories and thoughts about George Benton ? I am a huge fan of his

Re: Marvis Frazier
marvis was a good fighter, top amateur and had some good pro wins. of course he's remembered most for his losses. he was cruiser sized at most
Re: Marvis Frazier
Yeah, only 2 losses, but they are remembered more than any of his wins, because those were the 1st round KOs to Tyson and Holmes. While Marvis could deal with a lot of guys, who lasted against Holmes and Tyson more. Actually, he helds wins over Tillis, Ribalta and even Bonecrusher Smith.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑04 Dec 2020, 22:02 marvis was a good fighter, top amateur and had some good pro wins. of course he's remembered most for his losses. he was cruiser sized at most
Re: Marvis Frazier
Would have liked to have seen Marvis fight Angel Milian, Teofilo Stevenson, and Igor Vysotsky. Even Tony Tucker as well.
Re: Marvis Frazier
To be honest, I didn't really know him. I saw him in the gym everyday I was there but I was a new amateur and the gym was full of great boxers both amateur and pro as well as a lot of other trainers. I was friendly with Marvis because we both started around the same time, were close in age and he went to high school with one of my cousins. My trainer didn't work with me much. I was on my own mostly. I learned more by watching all of the great boxers and would listen when their trainers would tell them stuff. I was like a sponge soaking up whatever I could. Here is some of the boxers training in the gym when I was there: Jimmy Young, Leon and Michael Spinks, Dwight (Muhammad Qawi) Braxton, Jerry the Bull Martin, Bobby Boogaloo Watts, Bennie Briscoe, Willie Monore, Duane Bobick, Tex Cobb were some of the bigger name pros. For amateurs: Marvin Stinson, heavyweight US national champ, James Shuler, 1980 OLympic team, Meldrick Taylor, Marvis Frazier,
I know that Benton did a great job training Marvis from novice to national champ. He evidently was a very good pro until he took a bullet in the back messing with the wrong women. When Lou Duva signed most of the '84 Olympic team to pro contracts, it was Benton he hired to train them and they were all successful pros. I heard he became a heavy drinker and that led to the end of his career as a trainer.
