Sam Eggington vs. Ashley Theophane - 11 December 2020

Press Release

Battle hardened fighters Sam Eggington and Ashley Theophane will clash on Friday 11th December in what is expected to be a real blood ’n guts battle in a 12-Round International Contest, exclusively live in the UK on free-to-air Channel 5.

Presented by Mick Hennessy for Hennessy Sports in association with Ladbrokes, Infinitum, Numan and Everlast, the show will be staged behind-closed-doors at the Fly By Nite purpose built TV production facility in Redditch.

Eggington and Theophane will put everything on the line in this crossroads fight with plenty of pride and honour at stake between these two world class warriors.

Boxing has an abundance of ‘real-life Rocky stories’ of an underdog who has come up the hard way, down on his luck and has upset the odds and this describe’s Birmingham’s Eggington (28-7-0 17 KO’s) to a T.

In an eight year and 35-fight career, the working-class warrior has fought everyone; mostly away from home in fights he wasn’t supposed to win; been on the end of wrong decisions, but he continues to fight on with the dream of a World title shot.

With a belt haul that many boxers would retire content with, including British, Commonwealth, European, International titles - and last year capturing the IBF International Super-Welterweight title with a stunning second round KO win over Orlando Fiordigiglio in Florence - it’s the World title belt he craves.

‘Savage’ has carved a reputation as one of British boxing’s most exciting fighters for his thrilling performances that have made him a real fan-favourite. One of his most high profile nights was when he ended the career of the former Two-Time World Champion Paulie Malignaggi with a devastating eighth round KO in March 2017.

In his last fight in August, Eggington was involved in a toe-to-toe battle with fierce rival Ted Cheeseman that he lost on a highly debated points, but will be long remembered for a thrilling fight with an epic final round.

Eggington knows he has to do a number on Theophane to keep his world title dream alive and has promised to make it an early ending.

He said, “I’m still just 27 and I’ve accomplished so much in under 10 years as a pro, but the World title is the one thing that’s missing and I desperately want that more than anything else. Winning this fight is absolutely crucial to me and my future so there’s no ifs or buts, I have to win, full stop.”

“I’m coming off the Cheeseman fight that I don’t believe I lost, I one hundred percent won that fight and the scoring was dreadful with everything hedging towards him,”

“I’m now focused on Theophane who’s a good name. He knows the game inside out and he’s experienced and well travelled, we’re both solid pros and know what’s on the line,”

“He’ll want to win bad and so do I, I’m not planning on it going the twelve rounds, I’ll be getting him out of there inside that.”

Similarly, Paddington’s Theophane (50-8-1, 19 KO’s), the former British Super-Lightweight Champion, hasn’t had an easy ride in his career spanning 17-years and 58-fights that has seen him fight all around the world.

Previously promoted by Floyd Mayweather’s TMT outfit, ‘Treasure’ fought on the undercard of Mayweather’s fight against Andre Berto in September 2015 when he won a points decision over Steve Chambers.

In his only World title attempt, he faced elite fighter Adrien Broner for the WBA World Super-Lightweight title in April 2016, but the American failed to make the weight the day before and was stripped of the title. With the title vacant, only Theophane could claim the belt if he won and despite a brave performance he was halted in the ninth round.

Theophane then targeted 50 professional career wins and achieved that with a victory over Patta Varduashvili in Germany in December 2017. In his last fight in October 2019 he defeated the tough former IBF World Super-Welterweight Champion Kassim Ouma in Denmark.

He previously fought on two Hennessy Sports shows prior to his World tour when he defeated British Super-Lightweight Champion Lenny Daws (February 2011) and in the next fight defended the title against Jason Cook (July 2011), both fights were televised live on Channel 5.

Outside of the ring Theophane has also done incredible work in his community to raise awareness of youth knife crime through going into schools and talking to kids to encourage them to take up boxing training and get off the streets.

Theophane believes it’s an even fight with a blend of youth against experience and he’s confident of victory in his 60th pro fight.

He said, “Sam is very physically strong. He’s not afraid to go into enemy territory so that says a lot about his character. A weakness is that maybe he’s too brave for his own good.”

“Fights with Josh Kelly and Conor Benn never materialised for me and I believe that Sam is probably tougher opposition than them. He’s young, experienced and a former British, Commonwealth and European champion,”

“I’ve watched him once when he fought Malignaggi. That was an impressive win over a former world champion. He’s been stopped twice so it’s possible I can do that too. I believe it’s a great fight. Youth versus experience, it’s a 50/50 fight,”

“At this stage in my career. I’ve done everything except win the world title. I’ve beaten world champions, fought at the MGM Grand. I’ve headlined in Las Vegas. I’ve fought and won in twelve countries on my two-year world tour to achieve my 50 wins. I’m content. Right now. I’ll take it one fight at a time.”

“I’m training for the win. That is my aim to achieve my 51st win in my 60th professional fight.”

Decent fight. In fairness to Hennessy, most of his main events and good, even fights.

Wonder if Eddie’s pissed off that Sam’s fighting on a different channel.

Yep.

Bit of a weird one because I thought Eggington was done at welterweight (which I assume is what the fight will be fought at) and Matchroom have strong depth at light-middleweight. Eggington against any of the other Matchroom light middles (Fitz, Fowler, Conway or a Cheese rematch) would all be really good fights.

Hopefully he beats Theophane and gets back in the mix with them.

AT first glance you would assume Savage is too big and too young for the 40 year old Theophane.

But if fight is at welter, Savage might be drained and even at his best is pretty flat footed. Theophane has a lot of tricks up his sleeve and could edge his way to a decision utilising movement.

What a weird matchup, didn't see this one coming.

Don't really see what it does for Egg's career if he wins as expected.

A good, but weird match up...not sure why Channel 5 / Hennessy want to give a matchroom fighter this level of exposure

Press Release | Stevie, Aaron McKenna Added To Card

Red-hot Irish boxing siblings Stevie and Aaron McKenna will both fight on the same show for the first time as professionals when they appear on promoter Mick Hennessy’s event on Friday 11th December.

The unbeaten baby-faced brothers are ready to bring excitement and knockouts when they feature in separate six-round contests on the undercard of the crunch clash between Sam Eggington and Ashley Theophane, exclusively live on free-to-air Channel 5 in the UK.

Stevie, 23, made his first appearance for Hennessy Sports back in September on the Alex Dilmaghani-Samir Ziani undercard in his last fight and made an immediate impact with his devastating firepower by flooring Gary McGuire three times before the referee called a halt at just 1:13 of the first round.

He’ll return to the ring again just seven days later when he features on another Hennessy show on Friday 18th December headlined by the mouthwatering British Light-Heavyweight title showdown between Shakan Pitters and Craig Richards, also live on Channel 5.

Known as ‘The Hitman’, the 6ft super-lightweight hot shot from Monaghan, County Monaghan, has lived up to his nickname with all five of his opponents knocked out and he hasn’t wasted any time - four taken out in the opening round and one lasting until the second in only six-rounds of action.

Stevie said, “I’m thrilled to be fighting on Channel 5 again and it was amazing exposure for me where everyone could watch me for free. From beginning to end the experience was first class. Thanks to Hennessy Sports for the opportunity. I hope people watching enjoyed it last time, I put on an explosive performance. I can’t wait to deliver more on December 11th.”

This time Stevie brings with him super-welterweight Aaron, 21, who appears on the show courtesy of his promoter Oscar De La Hoya, and follows in his older brother’s footsteps by having his first fight on UK soil.

Aaron has slightly more experience with an unbeaten 10-fight record and six going early - five of those coming inside two rounds - with 31 rounds of action under his belt. Going under ‘The Silencer’ moniker, the 6’ 1” talent from Smithborough, County Monaghan is looking forward to his UK debut.

“It was great news from Golden Boy Promotions that they have secured a slot for me on the Hennessy Sports fight night on December 11th.” Said Aaron. “I’d like to thank Mick Hennessy for allowing me to fight and showcase my skills. Its great to get a fight before the end of the year and I am eagerly looking forward to putting on a show for my fans here in the UK and Ireland. The stage is now set for me and my brother Stephen to fight on the same card and we intend to produce the fireworks. Thanks to Golden Boy Promotions for granting me this opportunity.”

The all-action brothers are managed by Ken Sheer and trained by the legendary Freddie Roach at the Wildcard gym in Los Angeles. Both are currently in Ireland training with their father Fergal during the pandemic and they’ll return to Roach when travel restrictions are lifted.

Promoter Hennessy is thrilled to have Stevie back again and welcomes Aaron for the first time. Hennessy has family throughout Ireland and very close links to the boxing scene and his son Michael boxed out of the acclaimed St Monica’s Club in Newry as an amateur. Having watched both Stevie and Aaron from a young age and knowing Fergal, Hennessy was keen to work with the team.

“Stevie made such a great impression last time with his performance which was clinical, explosive and very quick, I’ve received hundreds of messages from fans who watched on Channel 5 and were left craving to see more of him!” Said Hennessy. “It’s fantastic to have Stevie on the show again and so quickly again on the 18 December, but I’m really excited to welcome his equally talented brother Aaron on the card - double the value! Thanks to Fergal, Oscar and Ken Sheer of Sheer Sports Management for making this happen and we look forward to seeing Stevie and Aaron in action next month.”

I’m not so sure. A peak Theophane would be tough for Eggington but I’m not sure this version of Theophane will be able to outwork him.

Ive not seen Theophane fight in years, maybe since Broner, he's on a winning streak at least, just beat Oumma lol, Eggington pushed Cheeseman close, im pretty sure he's gonna be fresher than Theophane, a lot bigger as well, he should win it but you just never know with Eggington, he's not comfortable with cagey fighters

Eggington isn't with Matchroom, only on a fight by fight basis. He is managed and trained by Jon Pegg who does that matchmaking for Mick Hennessy. It was probably the case that Matchroom didn't have a fight for Egginton seeing as Cheeseman didn't take the rematch as looks to be facing JJ Metcalf next year and they wanted to get him back to winning ways going into 2021. He is never in a boring fight so makes sense to all really, looking forward to Friday night!

Theophane the better technician but think his lack of power will see Eggington get to him later on. Eggington by stoppage anytime after 8

At their peaks Theophane scaled the heights & fights more so than Eggington.

It's now over 10 years since Theophane dropped a split decision in the States to an unknown called Danny Garcia...looks pretty damn good now.

Theophane should get KO'd before 6. I remember watching his last fight vs Ouma for a couple of rounds and turning it off. They both looked shot. Sam has to do a job here and get people wanting to see him back in the mix.

Good Lord ! Theophane took almost until the fight was finished to get some sharpness in his punches. His legs still look sturdy enough, but he may have reached an age when it takes ages for the body to splutter into life.

He needs to be much sharper come Friday night or Eggington will batter him.

As a side note, Ouma looked a pale shadow of the fighter he once was. He used to be bursting with energy and a world class fighter for a while.

Keep in mind this fight was one and a half years ago.

Yeah it was sad to see Ouma looking like one of those "teak tough" Ghanian imports that got shipped in for British prospects.

October 2019, so you can only assume that's not going to aid Theophane if he's got ring rust, whereas Eggington coming off a good 12 rounds against Cheeseman.

Theophane is a tough customer though, only an in form Broner has stopped him.
