that might have been the change actually
Re: Danny Garcia was always an overrated, average fighter
There are some guys like him that are truly world champions but definitely not the best of their era.

Re: Danny Garcia was always an overrated, average fighter
I've never really cared for Danny for some reason.... probably because of his dad. But he is a solid A class boxer-puncher. He's fought super tough competition throughout his career and was never stopped or completely dominated in any of his fights. The title of this thread is disingenuous.

Re: Danny Garcia was always an overrated, average fighter
For the record, I don't consider Danny Garcia as being a "great" fighter, so we agree on that point, but it's a tad unfair to undermine his legacy based on a few dodgy performances.Jeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑07 Dec 2020, 18:43 Garcia is a solid operator but nobody ever says hes great. Great fighters dont go life and death with peterson and hererra
Hes had a good career and made a lot of money
It's too easy to name all-time-greats or Hall-of-Famers that suffered from the occasional bad day at the office whilst their careers were either on the ascendancy or during their title reigns. And so I'll highlight a few of Muhammad Ali's, but I could easily provide other examples too...
Many feel that Muhammad Ali was fortunate to be awarded the decision victory over Doug Jones and only avoided being decked in that bout by the skin of his teeth. The Associated Press scored the fight 5-4-1 in favour of Jones.
Also, the likes of Alan Hudson, Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper, Joe Frazier and Chuck Wepner all managed to deck Ali.
Ali was definitely well behind on the judges scorecards when the referee prematurely stopped Ron Lyle (especially if you compare the stoppage to Joe Frazier’s first bout against Foreman).
Ali appeared to resort to cheating during his bout against the 212½lbs Ernie Terrell. When Muhammad changed the whole flow of the fight by intentionally rubbing Terrell’s eyes along the ropes, as well as sticking a thumb in the left eye.
In fact, ‘The Greatest’ was even behind on the scorecards when Henry Cooper was stopped on cuts during their first fight. And let’s not forget that Angelo Dundee resorted to using smelling salts, which were forbidden under BBBofC rules, and also drew attention to a “torn” glove to play for time in between the rounds that Ali hit the deck.
That’s the problem with attempting to undermine a fighters’ legacy by citing their worst performances, because most boxers have experienced bad days at the office at some point during their careers.

It isnt because he also lost to thurman, porter and spence. His best win is matthyse and khan
Add that with hererra and Peterson and you arent a great fighter

Who overrated Danny Garcia?
If anything, he might be slightly underrated.
He isn't elite, but he is far better than average, he's a solid and world class operator with a good resume, especially at 140.

Re: Danny Garcia was always an overrated, average fighter
I’ve always liked Garcia so when I saw this thread I was ready to rumble.. then I checked the tape.
Garcia has made a habit of facing guys (Spence, Thurman, and Porter excepting) when they’re aged out or coming off a loss. This does sort of tarnish the image. Even the Khan knockout is dimmed a little by the fact that he just lost to Peterson.
But average? I can’t go that far. The man was a Ring Magazine 140 lb champ. You could just as easily say Josh Taylor is average. Which I don’t think is the case.
He’s above average, an opponent for some of the best welters of his time, and a tough 140lber who came up behind a much better era of junior welters to clean up what was left.

GGG looked unbeatable in his prime, was a certified beast amd number 1 in his division for a long time, and was an elite amateur. You can't eben put GGG and the mediocre Garcia in the same sentence!Enlightened-One wrote: ↑07 Dec 2020, 17:47 Here’s a summary of Danny Garcia’s resume...
You guys might not like him, but it seems weird to me that fighters like GGG and Luis Ortiz are admired, even though the calibre of opposition they’ve faced is relatively dire in comparison to Garcia’s...
Fourteen of Danny Garcia’s bouts were against current/former world champions, which includes the likes of: Nate Campbell, Kendall Holt, Erik Morales (twice), Amir Khan, Zab Judah, Lucas Martin Matthysse, Lamont Peterson, Paul Malignaggi, Robert Guerrero, Keith Thurman, Brandon Rios, Shawn Porter and Errol Spence Jr.
He’s also a two-weight world champion that has contested ten world title bouts (four at 147lbs [IBF & WBC], with the remainder at 140lbs [WBA & WBC]).
Danny previously held The RING and lineal championships at 140lbs for three years (2012 to 2014/5).
Garcia is also currently ranked in seventh in the welterweight division by The RING and sixth by ESPN.
He also had an amateur record of 107 wins, 13 losses.
“Overrated” and “average” fighters don’t have resumes like that!
And just because he’s not a pound-for-pounder, it doesn’t mean he’s garbage or ordinary.
From that list of fighters you named.. the ones which he beat were almost all either paper champs/overrated/past it/chinny. Beating guys like kendall holt is not impressive lol
Danny was lucky he was in the weak as fornicate 140 division were poor fighters like Mbaye, Rees, Kotelnik, Khan, Holt etc were playing pass the parcel with the belts
And he was never a good amateur , he did nothing in the amateurs.

Like I said he has a great chin. But that aside
. He looks nothing much in every departmemt , hes just a decent average guy, very basic guy..His performance against Spence was pathetic he didnt even let his hands go to try to win. He was happy just to go the distance.

People need to stop putting him in the same sentence as Crawford and Spence cause hes not on their level

It would be rather interesting to see you explain the reason why people keep giving GGG a free pass when he’s been considered one of the top dogs at 160lbs since 2008, but has faced an astonishing amount of opponents that weren’t top-ten world-rated middleweights?Stanny Onis wrote: ↑09 Dec 2020, 17:46GGG looked unbeatable in his prime, was a certified beast amd number 1 in his division for a long time, and was an elite amateur. Most of these guys weren’t even natural 160lb-ers, since the majority of them previously campaigned in lower weight classes prior to their bouts against GGG.
Golovkin’s next bout is against Kamil Szeremeta. A fighter that has only scored five KO’s and has never beaten a world-rated fighter.
Szeremeta's last two outings came against opponents that had failed to emerge victorious in a combined total of 21 bouts, with Cortes losing 4 out of his last 5 contests and Palacios winning 2 of his previous 15 fights (without scoring a single victory in the last five years).
And back in October of last year, Tom Loeffler admitted that they’re lobbying the IBF to instate Kamil Szeremeta as GGG’s mandatory challenger for his newly-acquired IBF title.

Then you're silly. Parker's beat no one. Danny destroyed Khan when Khan was at his best and decisively beat Matthysse when everyone else was scared of him. You either possess a very harsh derogatory opinion of Danny Garcia, or you seriously overrate the accomplishments of the likes of Fedor Chudinov, Joseph Parker, Tevin Farmer and Lee Selby.Stanny Onis wrote: ↑09 Dec 2020, 17:53He looks nothing much in every departmemt... Alternatively, there could be a knowledge gap on your part, due to you being a young juvenile guy that's unfamiliar with anything boxing-related that occurred more than four years ago.

No you just overrate him massively
This is a guy who shoukd have losses to Herrera, Peterson and Ashley Theophane! And lost to Spence, Thurman, Porter.
Those guys I listed are all top 10 in their division, have good chins, are former world champions, and can never beat the best in their division. All the same level to Garcia
If Danny Garcia had a long foreign name and was from Eastern Europe or Japan. Nobody would overrate him this much. Hed be called mediocre or a bum and be dismissed. He has bigger profile than his ability and achievements warrant cause hes American and in their precious 147 division. Same like Keith Thurman and Devon Alexander was/were overrated.

Amir Khan!! hahahaha hes the most chinny and ridiculed boxer in the sport who'd just lost to the mediocre Lamont Peterson, and before that was getting KO'd by a Colombian Taxi driver in 50 seconds and Willie Limond ( 15 second count) . Cmon lol
Parkers win over Andy Ruiz Jr is better than any Danny Garcia win.
Danny has relied on his blind hook and when he can’t land it, he gets a dubious decision or loses.
Hererra, Peterson and one or 2 others can claim to have beaten Danny.

Re: Danny Garcia was always an overrated, average fighter
if u think garcia could've fought the whole fight like in the spurt at the end of round 12, think twice.
had he opened up like that earlier he woould've found himself unconscious on the floor.
he just found out relatively quickly that errol would go nowhere & he just can't hurt him, at the same time getting hurt himself whenever opening up hence spence's superior speed & power.
given that desperate situation he did what he could do.
