Shakur Stevenson to fight Toka Kahn Clary in Dec. 12 headliner on ESPN

Shakur Stevenson will fight Toka Kahn Clary in the main event of a Dec. 12 card on ESPN, Top Rank's Carl Moretti told ESPN on Tuesday.

Top Rank announced last week that Stevenson would headline the card against a yet-to-be-named opponent.

Stevenson, 23, vacated his WBO featherweight championship in July to move up to junior lightweight in hopes of bigger challenges.

In Kahn Clary, Stevenson will face a southpaw, something Moretti said that Top Rank wanted because it would like to match up Stevenson with fellow Top Rank southpaw Vasiliy Lomachenko or work out a deal with Golden Boy southpaw and IBF junior lightweight champion JoJo Diaz in 2021.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said last week he expects Stevenson to challenge the winner of a scheduled January bout between Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton for the WBO junior lightweight title.

Kahn Clary (28-2, 19 KOs) is on a three-fight winning streak since losing a competitive unanimous decision to Kid Galahad in a 2018 junior lightweight title eliminator. Kahn Clary notched a second-round knockout of journeyman Jonathan Perez last month.

"Shakur is a young talented fighter. It's a great matchup," said Kahn Clary, 28.

"I'm a little older with more experience. We've both got fast hands and good footwork, but I think power and experience will be on my side. A lot of the guys he's been fighting have been standing in front of him and pressuring him. They haven't been using their jab, so I look forward to doing that on the 12th."

Also on the Dec. 12 card, super middleweight prospect Edgar Berlanga, who has scored first-round knockouts in all 15 of his pro fights so far, will face a yet-to-be-named opponent, and lightweight Felix Verdejo will square off against Masayoshi Nakatani.

it was a close fight! Stevenson is far better than Galahad so I expect him to win with ease.

Edgar Berlanga vs Ulises Sierra kicks off Stevenson vs Clary card live on ESPN, Dec 12

Super Middleweight sensation Edgar Berlanga to face Ulises Sierra at MGM Grand in Las Vegas to open ESPN-televised tripleheader starting at 10 pm ET / 7 pm PT

Super middleweight wrecking ball Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga has been “The Perfect One” thus far, knocking out all 15 of his professional opponents in the first round.

Berlanga puts perfection on the line Saturday, Dec. 12, when he fights Ulises Sierra in an eight-round showdown from MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Berlanga-Sierra will open the ESPN-televised tripleheader (10 pm ET / 7 pm PT).

The fight card includes the 10-round junior lightweight main event featuring Shakur Stevenson and Toka Kahn Clary and a 10-round lightweight co-feature between Felix Verdejo and Masayoshi Nakatani.

“Edgar Berlanga has a unique blend of power and charisma, and I believe he is the next Puerto Rican superstar,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Ulises Sierra is the toughest test of Edgar’s career. Who knows if that will make a difference? We’ve tried to get the kid some rounds before, but once Edgar hurts his opponents, it’s game over.”

Berlanga (15-0, 15 KOs) has fought twice in 2020, spending a grand total of 2:21 inside the ring. He knocked out Lanell Bellows in 1:19 on the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Teofimo Lopez undercard, the first time Bellows had been knocked out in 30 professional bouts. Sierra (15-1-2, 9 KOs), from San Diego, entered 2020 on an eight-bout winning streak, which included a nationally televised 28-second knockout over Jose Hernandez. In January, he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to top prospect Vladimir Shishkin.

Stevenson vs Clary fight card

Shakur Stevenson (14-0, 8 KOs) vs. Toka Kahn Clary (28-2, 19 KOs), 10 rounds, junior lightweight

Felix Verdejo (27-1, 17 KOs) vs. Masayoshi Nakatani (18-1, 12 KOs), 10 rounds, lightweight

Press Release | Clay Collard and Robeisy Ramirez on ESPN

Boxing’s breakout cult sensation of 2020, “Cassius” Clay Collard, hopes to close out the year with a little slice of revenge. Collard will fight Quincy “Chico” LaVallais in an eight-round middleweight rematch of their June 2019 draw Saturday, Dec. 12 at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Collard, who is also signed to PFL as an MMA fighter, is 5-0 with three wins over previously undefeated boxers in 2020.

The card will also see the return of two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez, who is set to fight Brandon Valdes in a featherweight bout scheduled for eight or six rounds.

Collard-LaVallais 2, Ramirez-Valdes, and additional undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, preceding the ESPN-televised tripleheader (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) headlined by the junior lightweight battle between Shakur Stevenson and Toka Kahn Clary.

“Clay and Robeisy have emerged as Bubble fan favorites, so it is only fitting that they are part of our final show of 2020,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum.

Collard (9-2-3, 4 KOs) entered 2020 with a 4-2-3 record and coming off a TKO loss to light heavyweight phenom Bektemir Melikuziev. Following victories over unbeaten prospects Quashawn Toler (9-0) and Raymond Guajardo (5-0) to start the year, Collard made his Bubble debut June 18 with a decision victory over the 6-0 David Kaminsky.

He scored second-round stoppages in his next two Bubble outings and now looks toward Louisiana native LaVallais (9-0-1, 5 KOs), the man who held him to a controversial six-round draw in his fifth pro fight. LaVallais has fought twice since then, notching a pair of first-round knockouts in New Orleans.

Collard and LaVallais were supposed to fight Oct. 17 on the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Teofimo Lopez undercard, but they each tested positive for COVID-19. After that hiccup, the rematch is finally on.

“I’m going to show up with a smile on my face, shake his hand and win this rematch,” Collard said. “I will prove the first fight wasn’t a draw. I’m the ‘0 collector,’ and I’m taking his undefeated record. Simple as that.”

Said LaVallais, “Unfortunately, we both caught COVID in October, but in God’s eyes, everything happens for a reason. I pray that he and his team are healthy, but I hope he’s ready because my ‘0’ is not going anywhere. This is Chico’s world, and he’s just living in it.”

Ramirez (5-1, 3 KOs) seeks his fourth Bubble victory, and sixth overall, since a split-decision defeat in his professional debut. Ramirez, 26, has blossomed under the tutelage of noted trainer and countryman Ismael Salas. Valdes (13-1, 7 KOs), from Barranquilla, Colombia, last fought Aug. 14 and lost via unanimous decision to veteran contender Ricardo Espinoza Franco.

In other undercard action:

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (12-0, 8 KOs) vs. Saul Juarez (25-12-2, 13 KOs)
8/6 Rounds, Light Flyweight
Rodriguez, the 20-year-old southpaw phenom from San Antonio, Texas, had a breakout performance Sept. 5 in The Bubble, knocking out the normally durable Janiel Rivera in the first round. Promoted by Teiken Promotions, Rodriguez has knocked out his last four opponents. Juarez is a two-time world title challenger who has only been knocked out once, courtesy of a left eye injury in his sixth pro fight in 2011.

Haven Brady Jr. (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Michael Land (1-1, 1 KO)
4 Rounds, Featherweight
Former U.S. amateur star Brady, 18, returns following a punishing professional debut that saw him knock out Gorwar Karyah in four rounds. “The Hitman” won gold medals at the Junior Olympics, Eastern Qualifiers and National PAL tournaments prior to signing a professional contract with Top Rank earlier this year. Land, from Dallas, Texas, is coming off a four-round decision loss in July 2019 to the undefeated Francisco Javier Martinez.

Kasir Goldston (1-0) vs. Llewelyn McClamy (2-0, 1 KO)
4 Rounds, Welterweight
The 17-year-old Goldston, a native of Albany, N.Y. made his pro debut Sept. 19 and won a competitive four-round decision over Isaiah Varnell. Goldston won three consecutive National Junior Olympic titles before turning pro under the Top Rank banner. McClamy has only fought twice since turning pro in November 2017.

Clay Collard: I Came Out of Nowhere, I Don't Think Anybody Saw it Coming

It’s been the year of Clay Collard, one that may be coming to an end this Saturday in Las Vegas.

That’s sad news for the fans who took to the story of the mixed martial artist who made a full time return to boxing in 2020 and rapidly became a prospect killer of the highest order, going 5-0 over an array of foes that had a combined 32-4 record.

But business is business, and Collard will be wearing four-ounce gloves in mixed martial arts bouts when the Professional Fighters League (PFL) season kicks off in the spring of next year.

“I think once April starts, I'm gonna be pretty booked up for the year,” said Collard. “I got a whole year of MMA fights to go and I'm gonna go win this belt, so I'm gonna switch my focus over to mixed martial arts for that year and see what happens and then go from there.”

“I'll never quit MMA training,”
he said. “And I never stopped. When it comes closer to a boxing match, I kinda lay off it a little bit, but I've never stopped training mixed martial arts.”

And he does admit that he misses the sport where he’s compiled an 18-8 record, sometimes even during a boxing match.

“Some guys will give me angles where it's like, 'Man, if I could kick you, you wouldn't be able to walk after the first round,'” he laughs. “I'm excited to get back to it and see what I can do.”

Two years after being released by the UFC, Collard made his pro boxing debut, and though he went back to MMA in 2018 and went 4-1, by 2019, he was putting much of his time into the sweet science, going 3-2-3, with his only losses coming against top prospects Quinton Randall and Bektemir Melikuziev. One of the draws was against Quincy LaVallais in June 2019, and Collard thought he had seen the last of the unbeaten Louisiana native, but they will meet again this Saturday in Las Vegas.

“You know, I thought I won the first fight, first off,” said Collard. “After that, I was looking to the future. I was looking for the next guy.”

In 2020, those next guys included 9-0 Quashawn Toler, 5-0 Raymond Guajardo, 6-0 David Kaminsky, and 7-1 Maurice Williams. The results? Collard W6, TKO2, W6 and TKO2, respectively. In the midst of a pandemic, Collard became the fighter everyone cared about and wanted to see. LaVallais wanted to punch him in the face again.

“I started making a name for myself and beating these top prospects and climbing up the ladder and then he called me out,” said Collard. “So I think he's trying to jump on the hype train a little bit.”

He wants in on the Cassius Clay bandwagon?

“He's jumping on the bandwagon,” Collard laughs. “He wants a piece of me. But I think it's a mistake. I think I had him beat the first time and I've gotten so much better since then, in my opinion. I was still getting back into the whole swing of boxing the first time we fought. Now I've been doing it and it's second nature to me again. So I think it's gonna be a bad night for him.”

And with a win, it will be a good night for the fans who have taken him in. Then, all they can hope for is that Collard will be able to sprinkle some boxing in among his MMA fights. That sounds like a good plan for the 27-year-old, who appreciates the support he’s gotten in a year he will never forget.

“I describe this year as wonderful,” he said. “It has been a great year for me. I came out of nowhere. I think people kind of forgot about me after being cut from the UFC and I was on the local circuit, and I think everybody kinda wrote me off. And here I come choo-chooing, and the Collard train is back at it. (Laughs) I think that's why people care. I came out of nowhere and I started surprising people and beating top prospects and I just don't think anybody saw it coming.”
