If Hagler had beaten Leonard (don't even go there!), how much longer could he have carried on for and who would have been the fighter to beat him eventually? Personally I think he showed signs of slowing down considerably by the time of the Leonard fight.

If he'd have won he'd have gone for Monzn's record. I think Herol Graham was #1 contender. There may have even been Hagler-Hearns II. Marvin was fighting approx once a year by then so imagine another 12 months of fading reflexes on top of the Leonard fight and Hagler (still formidable) is going to be struggling.
One of the reasons Hagler was fighting so infrequently at this point in his career was that he was starting to pick up more and more injuries in training camp, such as the broken nose that delayed the Mugabi fight. This is of course another fact that suggests Hagler was very much on the slide by 1987.
If Hagler had got past Leonard and fought on then of course a mega-money rematch with Tommy Hearns would have been very likely. Aside from that Hagler may have taken on one of the leading contenders and hyped it as the aging Champ taking on one of "The young Lions" etc.
I think at this stage in his career Hagler (or his camp) may have steered clear of the likes of Michael Nunn, Herol Graham & Mike McCallum and maybe gone for Monzons record by giving either Frank Tate or Michael Olajide a shot at his title.

I to think Hearns best chance to win a rematch would have been to box and move as you say but could he do that for 12 rounds even against a faided Hagler? I'm not so sure.Ezzard wrote:Over 12 rounds, if Hearns stuck to a fight plan of jab, move, throw in the right when needed, then Tommy might have got a decision in a rematch.silkov wrote:The one fight I would have liked to see was Hagler vs Hearns 2.... who would have won that one?.... Cuts aside, sooner or later Hagler would have tagged Tommy then it may well have been over.
