Has anyone ever been to the International Boxing Hall of Fame?

Post by f read »

I have been there 10 times and it is worth a trip especially for everyone on this site. I promise you will not be disappointed. It is a boxing historians dream. I enjoy the card show in particular the memories. I am not an autograph buff but the fighters sign for free. The museum and grounds are also fun it is worth a weekend if you have the time. I live in Central New Jersey and it is about 285-290 miles away 5 hours via car.

Yes! I love it there! Every time we drive Maine to New Jersey, to visit our Kids, Grand Kids, and Great Grand Kids, I plan a detour and an overnight stop there.

Do you go during induction weekend? That is really the best time to go. Yes boxers are all over the place.

I have been there once.
Once.
There will not be a second stop and we drive right by it on the way to and from visiting our son in New York.

It was a dump and I feel like I'm being polite calling it a dump.
The museum/hall or whatever you want to call it is tiny, and not in good shape. I walk around at 160-170 lbs on any given day and there was a spot where I thought the floor may not hold me.
Leave that and walk out to the pole barn where they have a ring that was in MSG and you still will not be impressed.
The whole facility needs a bulldozer and rebuild.

Induction weekend is the only time to go there to meet the boxers. The facility itself is not worth the drive from anywhere to see.

I agree with you in a sense of going there just to visit on a normal regular day i would not drive nearly 300 miles for that. However the induction weekend is worth your while the whole town really comes to life. In 2021 Floyd Mayweather will be getting in so you know the town will be electric. The induction weekend i in particular enjoy the Saturday card and collector show at the high school honestly that is the main reason i go there. I enjoy the collectables from yesteryear especially the magazine collectors. You also get to meet not only some very sociable boxers the 2 i enjoyed chatting with were Sean OGrady and Marlon Starling real gentlemen and credits to the sport of boxing but some of the insiders who have been around training facilities and maybe had some interaction with past boxers.

Yep! Timing on these New Jersey trips (to see family) is everything. I don't discuss the timing with the Mrs. I find other reasons why its best visiting the offspring at that time. :OhYes:

A bit off topic maybe but you are right about Sean....I met him once and wanted him to sign my Ring:Boxing in the 20th Century book, as well as a boxing glove I was carrying that morning.

I wanted him to sign the page in the book where he is photographed beating Hilmer Kenty. Would you believe I opened it ion the page where he is pictured losing to Jim Watt instead? Well, I offered a sheepish apology, and he said I didn't need to apologize. We even spoke about that controversy in the Watt bout! And he signed both my items. A great gentleman he is!

(So is Watt, BTW)

Where did you meet Sean? When he cohosted USA Tuesday Night fights he used to be there at the IBHOF regularly the last 5 times i was there he was not in attendance. Really cool guy and looked to be in fighting shape even then.

I did at a hotel here in Phoenix during the weight-in before a fight of Willie Jorrin when he lost to Christian Favela, back in the day. I also met Barry Tompkins and Jorrin, everybody was great!

And yes he looks like he was in training! lol!

Making my first trip there in June and will be bringing Eder Jofre and his family along. Always wanted to go, so committed to Marquez’s induction a while back and been planning Eder going back there for a little while and booked everything already. Look forward to seeing some of you there!

Do not know if you knew or heard but the June 10-13 2021 induction ceremony has officially been cancelled. I am really disappointed. This is two years in a row now. Bummer.

Yeah, I saw that. Awful but understandable. I will plan on brining Eder Jofre in June 2022, and hopefully, he can still travel here twice this year since I already have flights booked for him and his family.
